northernmumtobe · 12/11/2009 20:51

Hi,

Looking for some information on schools in the North east region. Preferably that go from pre-prep through to sixth form and are mixed.

So far, am considering
Teeside High
Barnard Castle School
queen ethelburga's

But only really started looking and open to suggestions.

thanks,

NMTB

My DSD and DSS went to Barney, my DSS just did A-levels this summer. They are both keen on sports and loved the rugby and hockey.
My DS is at Bow, Durham school and is very happy there. It is mixed now but the girls are still in the minority. More every year though!
If there is anything you want to know just ask but I would recommend either

northernmumtobe · 14/11/2009 13:29

Dutchmam... thanks.

I'd love to know about the area please... Nice villages / places to avoid.

We need good transport links to airport (Tees Durham) and rail (Darlington?)

Also, about the schools - def. want mixed as I have DS and DD and def. looking for somewhere with lots of sports options.

Thanks,

NMTB

There are lots of nice places to live, depends a bit on what you want. Darlington and Durham are both nice with easy access to public transport. Barnard Castle itself is quite pretty but relatively expensive. Examples of nice villages would be Heighington near Darlington or Witton-le-Wear nearer Durham. Public transport can be a bit erratic especially at the weekend.

Barney school is pushing academics quite hard as well as sports, just remember it's ALWAYS cold and windy when you're watching at the sidelines. But the parents' tea after the match is usually nice (shallow I know). I think they now have a waiting list for senior school.

As I said my DS is very happy at the Pre-Prep of Durham School. They give them a good mixture of everything (sports, trips and academic work). It really is a lovely friendly school.

If you have not seen it yet The Sunday Times League Tables are HERE.

Select the type and location of school by region or town you want.

Is the name of the supermarket that is bugging you Wm Lowe? Was a Scottish chain, with a few in the NE.

Swedes2Turnips0 · 15/11/2009 19:29

Northernmumtobe ALdbrough St John is an extremely nice village - also Middleton Tyas. V easy commuting to A1 and rail links from Darlington. Lots of children in the area at Barnard Castle School. I'd stay south of the Tees (which is mostly within North Yorkshire and part of Richmondshire). It's prettier and the weather is better.

I really can't remember but WmLowe doesn't ring a bell.

I wonder if it was wilkinsons in the era when it was a supermarket rather than just a hardware/discount store. I think it closed in the early to mid 80's when wilkinsons changed direction to what it is currently.

Swedes2Turnips0 · 15/11/2009 21:14

Morrisons supermarket

CarGirl · 15/11/2009 21:45

No not morrisons, I always thought it was an independent one and thought Wilkins but googled and discovered wilkinsons was indeed a supermarket at around the right time.

I remember having a bag of brown sugar with the label on in the cupboard for years after it went!

In Eaglescliffe the Orchard estate supermarket was Frank Dees........

Hi NMTB

Have you looked at Yarm School, co-ed 3-18 years in Stockton-on-Tees?

Also if North Yorks isn't too far for you there's
Selby - The Read School - 4-18 years
Whitby - Fyling Hall School - 4-18 years
Scarborough College - 3-18 years
Harrogate - Ashville College - 4-18 years

All are independent and co-ed

To search for others you could look at www.find-a-school.co.uk where you can search by postcode and given radius

Good luck in your search!

I went to Teesside before the boys went there.

Very nice setting, very dedicated teachers. I wore blue and brown but its all changed now

Yarm had a reputation for being posher than Teesside and friends who went there for 6th form said they did encounter more bullying. But I think that was because boys beat each other up and thats more tangible than girls bitching about each other.

The head at Teesside now is the head at Newcastle High School and she is absolutely amazing, truely a inspiration just fabulous. I wrote her a letter when I graduated from uni thanking her for making my time at Teesside so amazing.

Love love love the Yarm area, the state schools there are excellent too - Conyers and Egglescliffe school are v.g. Its a lovely town, bit up itself though.

My parents chose Teesside not for the academics but because it felt like a family, very small and supportive. I feel like it gave me a really good work ethic too and I got excellent GCSEs that I don't think I would have achieved had I been elsewhere.

I moved schools for A'Levels because we moved and I think I would have done so so much better at Teesside.

I sound like an advert...

southernsoftie · 25/11/2009 13:02

Cundall Manor a really happy friendly school but currently only goes to GCSEs, it starts from nursery though. It is probably up and coming as has grown a lot over the last 10 years. Used to be a prep school so still geard up to Common Entrance but those who stayed to 16 got excellent results given that it is non-selective.

Yarm good at promoting itself, a good school if your have a star but not so good if your dcs are more average, they chuck them out at 13 if they think the child will damage their league table position, and being in the prep school is no guaranteee of a place at the senior school which does beg some questions about the standard of teaching if they can't get the junior children up to the right level. It is definitely the default choice in Teesside though.

Teesside High seems friendly and gets good results but still mainly used by parents of girls. maybe that will change as boys become established but when we went to look there weren't enough boys to run any teams.
