Calling all teachers. Question about PPA.

Anyone have any definitive knowledge about how much PPA time a part-time teacher doing 0.6 hrs should have each week? And whether "after-school" time counts in the allocation?

And also, if we're s'posed to have it on weeks when there's an INSET or occasional day?

its 10% afaik

you add the number of teahcing periods together( so over 2 weeks its 30 for me)

then divide by 10%
so 3 for me

It's 10% of your hours. I work my part time hours and get paid the 10% extra to do my PPA in my own time, so don't get any release time in school iyswim.

I'm nearly 0.6 (well 0.58 actaully) , we have a two week timetable and I get two 'frees' of which I tend to lose one for 'hardly ever cover' lessons and then two ppa periods.

How do you mean 'afterschool'?
I do 2.5 inset days - I get my ppa if the rest of the school is teaching, just like everyone else.

Is this 10% of the 1256 contracted/directed hours per year. And 0.6 of that? I'm not sure what my hours are per week. I do 3 full days in a primary school, but get one afternoon (i.e. 2 teaching hours) a fortnight. I'm not sure but I don't think that's enough, unless the HT is counting the extra time after school until I would go home (usually 5.30).

And none of us gets PPA time during any week where there is a bank holiday, an INSET day or an occasional day. It's been suggested by a friend that that's irrelevant. Which is why I thought I'd ask on here.

I do point 6. We have 6 periods a day and full time staff get 5 'frees', 2 of those are ppas I think. I get 3 'frees' and 1 is ppa.

I only work the insets that are on days I work anyway (I don't do bits of days, just 3 full days)

It's 10% of teaching lessons. We have a 50 period teaching timetable a fortnight. We are entitled to 5 PPA hours per fortnight. To be fair at our place we never get used for cover in our PPA. Extra time after school should not be counted afaik. To me it doesn't sound quite enough but my maths is crap so don't quote me on that. You are entitled to 10% of your teaching time in PPA so as you have 0.6 timtable you are entitled to 10% of 0.6 whatever the hell that is.

But doesn't the 1265 figure include "directed hours" after school (up to 4:30)? Or was that idea ditched? Dunno, as I have always stayed til 5:30 or 6 anyway. Plus bringing stuff home.

Too wimpy to do anything about it anyway. Although some other part-time colleagues are beginning to mutter about it.

Also, some people get a whole morning (3 hours + whereas others an afternoon (only 2)

I'm 0.6 in a Primary school. I get 1hr 35 PPA per week. But we still get PPA time in a week where there is a bank holiday, inset etc. So no, you're not getting enough time!

the 1265 figure does include directed time. In my school, this is one meeting a week (an hour), parent's evening, duties, open evenings, and 15 mins at the end of every school day. PPA should be not include this afaik at least they certainly don't include this at my place.

SO, accordning to my dodgy maths, I should be getting around 1.6 hours a week. Which should be rounded up to the next 30 mins, making 2 hours - a week?

Yes, it is part of the directed time thing, but not a % of the 1256 hours, iyswim

3 full days pw. And I get 2 hours (one afternoon) a fortnight, excluding non-full weeks (e.g. term starts/ends INSETs etc...)

the 1.6 needn't be rounded up if it is given as one block, only if it is split as the minimum block is 30 mins, so so long as you get 1.6 all at once each week its ok, or 3 hours a fortnight...

I work 0.6 in a Primary . I have just had my PPA upped to 1 hour 20 mins a week (from 1 hour) as apparantly it wasn't enough.

AFAIK before and after school time and breaks are not counted . It is 10% of teaching time (different to directed time)

yes breaks, assemblies etc not included, so add up the number of hours you spend teaching e.g. 9-12, 1-3 = 5 hours x 3 = 15 hours = 1.5 hours ppa

OK. Interesting. The thing is, 1 hour 20m a week (or 2 hours 40 mins a fortnight) is not so easy to organise when the afternoons are 2 hours long.

At our primary teachers get one 'half day' each week. So if you are working 3 days per week, then a half day a fortnight isn't quite enough.

Over a 10 week period, you would work 30 days, but should have 3 days, or 6 half days as PPA time.

so if you did it over 3 weeks you could have 2 afternoons of 2 hours in every 3 week cycleas that would be 4 hours?

its much trickier for primaries than secondaries imo
