has a very good reputation in my field, but that's all I know

Leeds is a fab city, especially Headingley where the main campus is located.

my brother went there 15 years ago loved it and never came back down to the south

cheeky-yes that has crossed my mind,we live on south coast..I want her to go to southampton but she's having none of it

i was there today (for meeting though not as a student) and i had a PhD supevisor there many moons ago, tis fab and leeds is a fab city! Excellent shopping when you visit.

Fairly quick by train from south coast...4 hrs.

I went to Leeds and it was fab. Mind you that was a long, long, time ago.

Leeds is a fantastic city, I went to uni in Leeds and only left last year, am happy to answer any specific questions you have about it.

ha ha...i walked through there this pm as a cut through...saw a lovely ring and asked the assistant about it (i was thinking it would be 200-400 quid)...anyway it was 1700...(the diamonds were real, i hadnt realised!) so then spent 5 mins feigning interest before beating a hasty retreat...Looked lovely on though!

Leeds is a great city - good uni with good reputation - lots of student accomodation - quite easy to get around - walk/cycle/bus. I went there but left donkeys years ago so would have no up to date info! I used to travel up and down from the south coast by National Express bus.

As a southern jessie myself warn your dd that it is cold in the winter!!!!! But you get used to it eventually.

I went there and it was brilliant from every perspective. Very student friendly with most things being on campus and the campus being in easy reach of just about anywhere. The city is fab. The coutryside around it is fab. The social life was fab (do they still do the Otley Run? (goodness - yes, I googled Leeds and Otley and it came up first! My DD and DS are at Leeds uni. Ggirl, my DD does German and languages are very good there, very well respected uni for languages. Also her friend from home does music and loves it. Definitely a good choice. Very student friendly, great city, lots to do, lots of transport etc.

I went to Leeds University many moons ago and loved it. In fact I still class Leeds as my "home" even though I haven't lived there in 15 years or more.
I visit the University regularly for meetings and it still has a great vibe (man) to it.
If your dd isn't going till next year then Charles Morris Hall is having what looks like a fab revamp and is right on campus so would be great to live! I lived there, can you tell?

Long, long time since I've been there, but 'in my day' - huge student community (2 unis close to each other) means lots of studenty stuff but never noticed any real town vs gown grumpiness (surprisingly); lots of good high culture as well as some excellent clubs; good shops (for you as well as her)
I had a ball

My SIL goes there(in final year so finished) and she loves it! They(her fiance goes there too) are now planning on living in Leeds and not coming home.

Very fine place. Russell Group so good reputation. Mind you Southampton is russel Group too if that's a consideration!

I think Southampton is good on both French and music (have had some very good music students from there on my course), but very likely Leeds is too.

I went and it's great.

I (like your dd by the sounds of things!) choose it because it was far from home (although my granny lived not too far).

I studied French and it had (has?) a very good reputation. Admission grades were the highest of all the places I applied to (3Bs at the time, not sure if it even works like that now).

It's big enough to have loads of great shops and bars and clubs, but the campus and student accomodation areas are small enough that you run into people easily.

I loved the fact that you could walk into town from uni - out of town campuses like Nottingham really put me off.

Ggirl - believe we're in the same area - direct train to Leeds from Brockenhurst station! Put DDs on it last year to visit uncle, book ahead and it's cheap. Ditto flights from Southampton.
