Someone I know suggested that his child was a level 6 when he went to secondary and yet everything I read seems to suggest that 5 is the highest level they test for.

Interesting. I did my Y6 SATS in 1999 and moved schools during year 6. At the first school which was a "better" school, I would have taken the Level 6 paper with a few other children, at the second school I remember a teacher asking me very quietly in a stationery cupboard(!) whether I wanted to take it. I did want to but didn't in the end - don't know why, but I did get full marks on one of my SATs papers.

In my experience the brightest people in both my family and my DP's family are also those who suffer from severe depression. In my family this has led to alcoholism and associated death and in DP's family the brightest most accademic is also a total recluse. DS is very bright but he also is very sensitive and worries about all sorts of things - death etc....

have to say ds 1 is like this, very sensitive and concerened with massive, major life issues (death, god etc) his brother although only young is a totally different kettle of fish, very robust and laid back. Doesn't take things to heart.

Ds1 started in reception in 1999 and at that time his school ,which was in a very affluent area, used to get 2 or 3 children at level 6 Maths every year. Most children were tutored though.
