We are considering to go private from year 4 for our DD. Cant decide between Howells or St Johns ( dont have place in either of them yet) St Johns is closer to where we live and DDis musical but everyone who we know sends their DD to Howells

Hope you someone can help you soon.

i would prefer co-ed personally and a shorter commute (and the cheaper fees!)

supplement musical ability with after school classes...

SAMS73 · 23/02/2009 15:35

fees is not cheaper at stjohns but that alone is not the deciding factor

R u catholic?

I would have loved to send dd to St. Johns as we go to the Met Cathedral and Fr. Peter is our priest and is very good.
The school has a good reputation, but the uniform is hideous
I dont know anything about Howells sorry

SAMS73 · 23/02/2009 15:43

No I am not even a christian but I do like their ethos. BTW Who is Fr Peter and what does he have to do with the school? Sorry if I am naive in asking this.

The school is tied to Cardiff Met Cathedral (behind M&S in town), Father Peter is the priest there and also the priest for St. Johns. A lot of the children sing at Mass on a sunday.
I would imagine (as with dd's catholic high school) that the church would come into it at some point and RE would be a mandatory subject so only you know how you feel about that.
BTW I wasnt catholic when I sent dd to Catholic primary school, but like you, I like the ethos and mission statement. I eventually converted to catholicism (from being CofE) and dd has taken her first communion

SAMS73 · 23/02/2009 16:01

oh.I am not really fussed regarding the RE. I just want the best education possible.

LIZS · 23/02/2009 16:03

how do you define "the best" though - tbh I suspect whichever one you go for you will find things which are positive for your dd/you and whcih are negative, not an idyll. when is your dd going into Year 4 ?

mosschops30 · 23/02/2009 16:08

I think you may have to be fussed, you will be expected to attend endless Masses, support the Catholic ethos of the school and not come on MN stating 'AIBU to tell my dc they dont have to pray'

Like I said if I had the choice, I would have sent dd there

SAMS73 · 23/02/2009 17:53

LIZS in september. WHAT does AIBU stand for.

LIZS · 23/02/2009 18:21

Just spotted this. I went to Howells 13 years ago and adored it. Miss Fitz was head and the atmosphere was so open, relaxed and encouraging. The buildings were really inspiring and I remember the music teaching was exceptional.

SAMS73 · 10/03/2009 19:50

ACCIDENTALMUM - I visited howells but it is too big (they have doubled the junior school intake in the last few years) St johs appears to be very caring and a close knit school. Music appears as a very stong point at st johns. No extraordinary clubs or after school activities at stjohns.

Regarding the music option, when I was in the 6th form at Whitchurch comp. we had numerous girls come over to us from Howells because the music dept. was excellent at the comp.
