One in five kids at Eton are on a bursary (means-tested) and they're fund raising to make that one in three. I think it's a bit knee-jerk to attack the place more than other private schools when they are doing a damn sight more to widen access than most, really.

I was friends at Uni with a guy who went to Eton. At admissions interviews (for a music scholarship) they asked what his Dad did. He said, "he's a conductor." They asked which orchestra and he said, "no - on Eurostar".

I know of a very bright boy attending a prep school which sends 1 or 2 a year to Eton who passed the pre-test with high marks but was turned down. The prep school head looked into it and found that the interview had been the problem. The boy had come over as 'obnoxious'. That goes to show how they have changed for the better cos I thought that was just the type of boy they wanted.

MrsGrahamBell · 06/02/2009 18:38

I'm sure there are plenty of very obnoxius children at all schools. Our local comp seems to turn out quite a few of them every day, judging but the amount of litter I have to pick up from my garden after they have walked past. Wonder if they have a litter poblem, (or a knife patrol, like ours) in Windsor?

abraid · 06/02/2009 18:45

My nephewcurrently in the Civil Service Fast Stream, post taking a degree in Japanese at Oxfordcertainly doesn't fit the thick and rich stereotype.

And, unlike the teenagers from the local comprehensive who tipped rubbish all over the pavement and politely gave me a mouthful when I asked them to pick it up, he doesn't fly tip.

Any more stereotyping going on here?

MollieO · 07/02/2009 00:04

No particular litter problem in Windsor that I am aware of and definitely no knife patrol .

abraid · 08/02/2009 16:30

Yes, exactly, the point being that all these stereotypes are flawed. Most of the children I know at the local comprehensive are great, and wouldn't dream of fly-tipping. If I based my assessment of their school on the gang I encountered the other night, I'd be unjust. But people who are making generalisations about pupils from schools like Eton are being equally unjust.

Cftcf and Seeker-I really don't think Tipsy is a troll, I think she's for real. That's what makes her so scary. I suspect she's the Mum from one of those 'Gifted Children' documentaries-the one who'd moved her son from schools about 7 times. Her younger son's IQ was tested on the programme and was found to be pretty high as well-which fits with her latest posts. She's about to move him as well. Be afraid, be very afraid...

MollieO · 08/02/2009 18:57

I had a look at that forum since in many years time my ds will no doubt be doing the 11+. I don't think there is an independent secondary school in the country that she doesn't have an opinion on!

abraid · 08/02/2009 19:26

I've now got gripped by her, too. Another internet addiction, oh dear.

MollieO · 08/02/2009 21:19

Same thing seems to be happening to me abraid! It is quite addictive. I am also amazed at the number of entrance exams some of these poor dc seem to do. Can't really imagine putting my ds through the same in years to come.

abraid · 09/02/2009 08:34

It must cost them ££££ in entrance fees/deposits, etc.

MollieO · 09/02/2009 08:52

I do wonder how much of it is just talk!

singersgirl · 09/02/2009 10:49

I think you're right, JazT, about Tipsy's identity. I thought she was scary before (DS1 is doing entrance exams this term so have browsed the forum), but now I think she's terrifying.

JazT · 09/02/2009 12:32

What's even more terrifying is that loads of parents on that forum have started asking her for advice on schools!

bagsforlife · 09/02/2009 14:25

Another Tipsy spotter here!!!

She is absolutely extraordinary. Some time back she was going on about applying to Cambridge herself. Now she never mentions it.

Do you think she is living in a fantasy world and actually has no children but spends her time looking up independent school statistics on the internet.....

JazT · 09/02/2009 17:52

...only slightly more scary is the thought that she actually DOES have children and spends her time moving them from school to school.
LBSWM scares me too...

Metella · 09/02/2009 17:55

There are a lot of scary people over there!!!!

lazymumofteenagesons · 09/02/2009 18:24

I don't have any kids of 11+ age, but i'm almost persuaded to go on this site just to check out these wierdos! But maybe that makes me as sad as them!

bevelino · 15/04/2009 21:08

Is Tipsy (see eleven plus forum) an educational consultant or teacher and can I rely on her advice, she appears to know an awful lot about schools, particularly indies?

MollieO · 15/04/2009 21:35

I have no idea. I wondered if her poor children are submitted to entrance exams all over the country! I know others have asked her but she doesn't say openly. I'd PM her if I were you (and brave enough!!)

cherryblossoms · 15/04/2009 21:38

Is this the "elevenplusexams" support thread?

I've used it too, but I've never "wandered" around it enough to really come across Tipsy. i feel I've missed out.

She sounds like a cult figure.

[Wanders off to check out "elevenplusexams".]

bagsforlife · 15/04/2009 22:50

She's currently going on about sending her child to a grammar school....gasp. Eton v Winchester seems to have gone a bit belly up.

MollieO · 15/04/2009 22:53

She's muttered before about scholarships and cost so I'm not surprised. cherryblossoms I can't believe you haven't 'seen' her. She is omnipotent!

bagsforlife · 15/04/2009 23:18

You have to go on the independent section to 'find' her. She has been more or less banned from the other sections on account of being slightly ridiculous.
