hi!does anyone know what is the intellegence test all about which 10 to 11 year olds have to do on a computer when boys apply to eton and if they pass then they take the actual entrance test at 13+ to join eton. Please answer A.S.A.P.

What is eton?

seriously, do you want your DS to go there?

ahundredtimes · 04/02/2009 16:47

I know someone who did this. You can't prepare for it. You go down and a variety of things come up on the computer - not sure what.

It might show a shape and then it will say 'how many sides?' or 'was that a pentagon or quadrilateral'. If you pass this, then you take the common entrance at 13.

Think I'm right. Think it's something like that.

ahundredtimes · 04/02/2009 16:49

Only I think the questions get increasingly difficult, and aren't all 'how many sides'.

The idea being that you can't prepare for the test.

LIZS · 04/02/2009 16:53

I suspect they pretest - using verbal and non verbal reasoning - like several public schools to screen out those who aren't likely to really be up to it and also to suggest who can apply for a scholarship at 13+. Some schools put samples of their tests online so try looking at a few other school websites. However your ds' current school should be able to guide you if they feel it is appropriate to apply.

ahundredtimes · 04/02/2009 16:57

Oh and when you go and do the computer test, there's also a chat / interview too.

louii · 04/02/2009 16:59

Beyond me why anyone would send their child to that school.

louii · 04/02/2009 17:00

Oh silly me, I meant "college" not school what a crock of shit!

LIZS · 04/02/2009 17:27

maybe you could glean some info from this site ?

MollieO · 04/02/2009 20:39

Not sure I understand the anti-Eton comments here? Why is Eton worse than any other independent school? It is our closest boarding school and if my ds got in I'd have no concerns about him going there.

Horton · 04/02/2009 21:33

I was a bit shocked, too, Mollie. I have no idea why someone would want to come onto a thread where someone had asked a perfectly reasonable question merely to be rude to the OP. Would they have done it if someone was asking about primary or secondary state school entrance? I don't think so. How childish.

alphabetsoup · 04/02/2009 22:52

Yes, Mollie and Horton, some people are so immature, ungracious and generally exhibit unattractively bitter and scornful personalities.

A poster describing eg someone's neighbourhood comprehensive as a "crock of shit " would quite rightly be given short shrift. But let's rise above the nonsense.

Best to ignore really

Rocky12 · 05/02/2009 13:13

Does your son go to a feeder school for Eton? They will be able to advise but I get the impression you might be trying to get into Eton cold (sorry if that isnt the case.

MollieO · 05/02/2009 15:24

I assume that they aren't at a feeder as if so the OP would know what was entailed. If it were me I'd either contact the school (they are supposed to be encouraging wider access) or track down a local tutor who may know.

bevelino · 05/02/2009 17:37

If you post your question on the Independent schools section of the www.elevenplusexams.co.uk forum you're more likely to find out. Someone may even have asked in the past.

I wish your ds the best of luck!

controlfreakythecontrolfreak · 05/02/2009 17:40

they talk of little else on that site .... especially a poster called tipsy... who is a walking encyclopedia re eton / winchester / etc etc. rugby also do that test apparently.... does their website say anything? if etyon is nearest school doesnt current school know all about it??

Metella · 05/02/2009 17:48

LOL - Tipsy knows about every independent school, apparently!! There is another mum on there whose ds recently started Rugby and at least one dad with sons at Eton. There is some helpful stuff there.

seeker · 05/02/2009 18:46

That is without a doubt the scariest site I have ever been on!

controlfreakythecontrolfreak · 05/02/2009 18:59

tis truly another world seeker! but does have some useful stuff (free test papers etc) and is v v funny in parts, esp. dear tipsy! you are allowed to say NOTHING in the least controversial / difficult / critical of anyone or anything.... doesn't reslly suit me....

seeker · 05/02/2009 19:20

True. Mind you I did have a pretty dramatic barney which involved TIPSY once! And when I first went on there someone told me that my dd didn't have a chance of getting into grammar school because I said she was unlikely to get top marks in her 11+1

didn't realise there was an entrance test for eton, how on earth did the royals get in???

Quattrocento · 05/02/2009 20:39

I think you have to fail it to sit the entrance exams. Then when you sit the entrance exams, you have to have a low enough mark to sit the interview. Think that's how it works at Eton. Is your child stonkingly dim?

MollieO · 05/02/2009 21:34

A former neighbour of mine's son got in via the state scholarship route. He is incredibly bright. Looking at the league tables (when Eton participated) they were nearly always top or near the top. What does that say about every other public school? Or is the view here that any school other than a state school is the domain of the thick and rich?
