Dont know if it was covered in the other thread but as a former academic and parent to an autistic child, what bother me more than the lies and plagiarism, is the hope it gave us autism parents that our children coyld achieve. Has there been any indication that he lied about the non speaking and the autism?

Well the memoir will be out in a few days in the US. Reaction to that should be interesting. And there was some good general discussion on universities and research in the last thread which could continue.

Certainly about the non speaking. A former primary school classmate says he was proper chatty.

I saw a post on FB, a guy who says he was at primary school with him and that he chatted away just fine from a young age

I'm torn at this point. I really think his book launch shouldn't happen. But I equally want to know how he felt when he first stepped on to the surface of Mars.

It’s certainly a black eye for Cambridge.

The whole affair is reminiscent of what happened with Claudine Gay, the President of Harvard University, who was forced to resign after it was discovered that her doctoral thesis had heavily plagiarized passages, and that she had embellished her CV.

Another similarity to the Salt Path palaver - that pile of lies gave hope to people with the same condition that thingy supposedly had (her husband, name escapes me).

At this point I want to read his book AND any book @Boiledbeetle writes.

Yes, but Claudine Gay is still a tenured faculty member at Harvard. It seems that some people’s plagiarism is more forgivable than others….

Fair point, but that’s still a big fall from university president. It might have had something to do with their tenure rules.

It was also a PR disaster for Harvard. Especially after her terrible performance in front of Congress during the antisemitism inquiry.

Was speaking to a friend at Cambridge about this yesterday. Didnt know Arday but does know various departments quite well.

Was very strange what they had to say. They don’t believe he has autism and is feels sorry for how SBC not only believed it but then wrote two supports (one the letter then a tweet apparently). Apparently he’s the world expert so that’s very embarrassing.

They did say there’s something very strange going on over there with autism. In that the percentage of people with some kind of autism feels very high - that by virtue of these being highly specialised ‘obsessed’ people in a way it’s to be expected. In an Asperger’s way not a mute autistic way.

But that also there’s a whole collection of people; specifically those studying the autism topics that have proclaimed themselves autistic. They said this was a response to autistic people criticising research and saying ‘but you don’t have lived experience’ and the work around to that was to self id as autistic so you could reference the ND accolades of the authors in your papers. Most of these people he says are really stretching to make that claim. Sure they probably have various traits and everyone’s on the spectrum but it’s silly because autism for people formally diagnosed and heavily on spectrum is a completely different kettle of fish.

It's truly mind-boggling how Cambridge Uni behaved regarding Jason Arday, including his ludicrous boss Hilary Cremin. Arday certainly doesn't come across as a likeable person with any integrity or academic ability, but at the same time, it appears he was exploited by the people who employed him as a Professor.

The claims of autism, mute till 11 and illiterate till 18 share parallels with the Salt Path. Horrendous for people legitimately diagnosed with the conditions these charlatans Arday and Raynor Winn used to self-promote so deceitfully.

It's incredible Cambridge fell for the ridiculous claims Arday made and failed to check anything. As for his writing, it's not even up to Undergrad level is it. Bizarre the PhD supervisor / external whoever don't seem to have used Turnitin or similar; it would have come out as 95% plagiarised. LJMU sounds like a truly shit uni and Sociology like a pretty shit subject.

It'll be pantomime season soon.
Perhaps a revival of the Extraodinary Adventures of Baron von Munchausen.
There is an ingenuity who would be perfect in the leading role.
Even has the athleticism that the role requires for for riding on canon balls etc.
Little rehearsal needed.
He is a natural performer.

As an academic it is interesting how 'normal' people perceive academia. The comments I've seen under news articles like "well hiring should be based on qualifications and performance not DEI" as if anything in academia is based on merit! It's a networking and reputation game.

@Goingmaddddthats so interesting about SBC research group. Cambridge (alongside other US universities) has received a massive donation (millions) to set up a centre to research autistic lived experience.
