Jason Arday, Cambridge Plagiarist?

I’m surprised to be the first to mention this, but what do people think about Jason Arday, the Cambridge professor accused of plagiarism, and the media row that is brewing around him?

For those that don’t know, three years ago Arday became – at 37 – the youngest-ever black professor at Cambridge. Arday claims to have been diagnosed with autism at an early age, and says he couldn’t speak until he was eleven, and apparently only learnt how to read and write at eighteen.

The appointment, made when BLM issues were very much in the news, was made despite allegations of plagiarism in Arday’s doctorate, which were dismissed by Cambridge as being beyond its purview, and because he had been cleared by the awarding institution, Liverpool John Moores.

Those allegations have resurfaced in the past few days, with examples that certainly seem fairly damning, including a misplaced s apostrophe in the title of part of his doctoral thesis (An exploration of peer-mentoring among student teachers’ to inform reflective practice within the context of action research). This blatant error seems to have originated in a phrase supposedly lifted from the thesis he allegedly plagiarised, although in that original case it formed part of a sentence in which it was grammatically correct.

My experience of dipping at random into the paper, which is available online, immediately showed a number of other very basic spelling and other mistakes, almost as if it had not been proofread at all.

In an abstract (the summary written by the author, which is placed right at the beginning of an academic paper) from a different 2018 Arday paper, the following three grammatical/spelling errors occur within a single paragraph of just 160 words (again, this can easily be found online):
This paper employs a Critical Race Theory (CRT) a storytelling method, which operates…
powerful ways in racism unfolds within in the Academy…
dismantle inequity in all its suboardinated forms…

There are now reports that Cambridge – which insists that Arday is the victim of a “vile campaign to undermine his credibility” – is, perhaps not surprisingly, facing a “staff revolt” over the issue. Arday himself complains of “dark arts” being used against him, and says that autism led him to rely heavily on mimicry to make sense of information.

On the web you can find reports of various claims made by Arday (though several universities seem to be scaling them down, now that the spotlight is upon them). And yes, I have copied some of these:

  • To have finished his PhD in 2½ years while working full-time and living with a brain tumour.
  • To have featured on a television show that ran over a decade before he was born.
  • To have run thirty marathons in 35 days, despite having experienced an epileptic fit, a seizure and a leg fracture. He also says he has run 600 miles in six days, just fifty miles short of the world record (no evidence of these extraordinary feats appears to exist, nor have witnesses come forward to testify to them.
  • To have raised over five million pounds for charity (when challenged in recent days over this, Arday said this was done in association with others, who he declined to name because, he said, he had signed non-disclosure agreements that stopped him from doing so).
  • To have played football and snooker professionally (no indication is given as to how Arday might have communicated on a football pitch when mute, as he says he was until the age of eleven).
  • To have had a stroke immediately after graduating, causing him to lose his memory of working on his PhD.
  • To have two GCSEs, in PE and Textiles (no timeline is given for when he is supposed to have taken these exams, but both of them would presumably have involved some writing – a skill that he apparently only acquired at age 18).
  • To sleep only two hours per night.

Try searching online..... even "The Guardian" has now decided he is not everything he claims to be. So what do people think, and what does it say about higher education nowadays???

This guy apparently has the endurance capabilities of Atlas, given his claimed childhood difficulties, then his miraculous ability to not only overcome those difficulties but go on to excel in a way only expected by the most spectacular of people as an adult.

A man who by his own words has not lied and expects to be believed by everyone about everything just ups and quits as soon as his employer starts getting twitchy.

Nope. That wouldn't happen if his history was all true. He wouldn't quit if he knew he was in the right.

By the looks of it he appears to be a fraud and a fantasist!

He's resigned !

Well done Mumsnetters.
The voice of sanity in a mad mad world yet again.

I don't think this was driven by Mumsnet particularly.

I hope Cambridge will be aware of their duty of care. It's hard to know what exactly has been going on with him, although I agree that the plagiarism alone makes him unfit for the position

SpottyAlpaca · Yesterday 20:45

So he has quit. Quelle surprise!

I notice he’s playing the ‘poor me’ card rather than providing a detailed, fully sourced, properly corroborated point-by-point rebuttal of all the allegations against him. Surely that’s what any credible academic who wished to clear their name against untrue allegations would do?

I doubt that would be possible

He's resigned !

Wonder what sort of settlement Carter Ruck have negotiated for him.

I'm not too sure if you're saying that this presents evidence for or against his claims?

I think that if he's a fantasist, that may be where he got his inspiration.

ilovebrie8 · Yesterday 20:50

He’s been found out.

Why no one checked beggars belief.

Cambridge’s credibility is in tatters.

We all know exactly why nobody checked. It’s blatantly obvious. Because of fear of career-ending allegations of racism against anyone who dared to ask even the simplest & most obvious questions.

I wonder if his resignation will mean that Cambridge doesn't need to say any more publicly.

If so I expect his union / lawyers negotiated a fair sum in return for his resignation. Very convenient for Cambridge that he's gone quietly.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · Yesterday 21:00

His statement is hosted by the Good Law Project website because they’re the only people who still believe in him.

The GLP has the most astonishingly bad judgment. How can anyone take them seriously after this?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · Yesterday 21:02

From his statement

‘I have tried to continue because I believe deeply in the values of higher education, in rigorous scholarship, and in the transformative power of universities‘

rigorous scholarship….

Yorkshirelass04 · Yesterday 21:04

Well where is he going to go now?

Completely agree - they're an absolute joke.

Yorkshirelass04 · Yesterday 21:06

I predict a celebrity sas appearance.

ilovebrie8 · Yesterday 21:07

How anyone can still believe him? It’s laughable he’s a chancer that ran his mouth off.

Cambridge have been hoodwinked and lost credibility

Cholm · Yesterday 21:15

It seems that both Cambridge U and Jesus College decided to investigate him. Cambridge reminded everyone that they are dealing with a human being and he remains a Fellow whilst the investigation is underway.
His resignation letter is also long and self justifying.
They really should have investigated first.

Do you think he will stand for re-appointment, against Prof. Binface?

I predict a celebrity sas appearance.

Funny you should say that. Apparently Lt Col. Arday (as he was then known) led the SAS assault team which ended the siege at the Iranian Embassy in London in 1980, freeing the hostages & killing the terrorists, so he would be ideal for the show.

I’m sure nobody will mention the trivial detail that the raid happened 9 years before he was born…

Thanksforyourlackofthought · Yesterday 21:24

It's giving me Jack Monroe vibes.

CrocsNotDocs · Yesterday 21:31

CousinBette · Yesterday 20:16

Why is he so very shiny?

According to the dark corners of the web, he’s a white man in blackface who is conducting the ultimate long game performance art to show up the ludicrous humanities.

I would love this to be true but I think he’s just a garden variety fantasist who got lucky in that his make believe identity was the fashion of the day.

Easily explained by him being a physicist who has mastered time travel. Open your mind.

Well where is he going to go now?

I see a slot on Blue Peter for him. Kind of inane grin, certain plenty of imagination.

He is, if we can believe it, a governor of a primary school in London, so perhaps he could go there - it's much more his level

Obviously. That's how he managed to be on 7-Up before he was born. And how he did his Ph.D. in 2.5 years while working full time. He has something like a Time-Turner which allows him to have more hours in the day.
