Jason Arday, Cambridge Plagiarist?

Angeruish · 02/08/2026 16:47

I’m surprised to be the first to mention this, but what do people think about Jason Arday, the Cambridge professor accused of plagiarism, and the media row that is brewing around him?

For those that don’t know, three years ago Arday became – at 37 – the youngest-ever black professor at Cambridge. Arday claims to have been diagnosed with autism at an early age, and says he couldn’t speak until he was eleven, and apparently only learnt how to read and write at eighteen.

The appointment, made when BLM issues were very much in the news, was made despite allegations of plagiarism in Arday’s doctorate, which were dismissed by Cambridge as being beyond its purview, and because he had been cleared by the awarding institution, Liverpool John Moores.

Those allegations have resurfaced in the past few days, with examples that certainly seem fairly damning, including a misplaced s apostrophe in the title of part of his doctoral thesis (An exploration of peer-mentoring among student teachers’ to inform reflective practice within the context of action research). This blatant error seems to have originated in a phrase supposedly lifted from the thesis he allegedly plagiarised, although in that original case it formed part of a sentence in which it was grammatically correct.

My experience of dipping at random into the paper, which is available online, immediately showed a number of other very basic spelling and other mistakes, almost as if it had not been proofread at all.

In an abstract (the summary written by the author, which is placed right at the beginning of an academic paper) from a different 2018 Arday paper, the following three grammatical/spelling errors occur within a single paragraph of just 160 words (again, this can easily be found online):
This paper employs a Critical Race Theory (CRT) a storytelling method, which operates…
powerful ways in racism unfolds within in the Academy…
dismantle inequity in all its suboardinated forms…

There are now reports that Cambridge – which insists that Arday is the victim of a “vile campaign to undermine his credibility” – is, perhaps not surprisingly, facing a “staff revolt” over the issue. Arday himself complains of “dark arts” being used against him, and says that autism led him to rely heavily on mimicry to make sense of information.

On the web you can find reports of various claims made by Arday (though several universities seem to be scaling them down, now that the spotlight is upon them). And yes, I have copied some of these:

  • To have finished his PhD in 2½ years while working full-time and living with a brain tumour.
  • To have featured on a television show that ran over a decade before he was born.
  • To have run thirty marathons in 35 days, despite having experienced an epileptic fit, a seizure and a leg fracture. He also says he has run 600 miles in six days, just fifty miles short of the world record (no evidence of these extraordinary feats appears to exist, nor have witnesses come forward to testify to them.
  • To have raised over five million pounds for charity (when challenged in recent days over this, Arday said this was done in association with others, who he declined to name because, he said, he had signed non-disclosure agreements that stopped him from doing so).
  • To have played football and snooker professionally (no indication is given as to how Arday might have communicated on a football pitch when mute, as he says he was until the age of eleven).
  • To have had a stroke immediately after graduating, causing him to lose his memory of working on his PhD.
  • To have two GCSEs, in PE and Textiles (no timeline is given for when he is supposed to have taken these exams, but both of them would presumably have involved some writing – a skill that he apparently only acquired at age 18).
  • To sleep only two hours per night.

Try searching online..... even "The Guardian" has now decided he is not everything he claims to be. So what do people think, and what does it say about higher education nowadays???

It will be very interesting to see the outcome of this - whether Cambridge stands by Arday following its investigation, or whether there's going to be some kind of "parting by mutual consent" arrangement.

I imagine the uni is currently freezing out JA from conversations and having "don't anyone dare make any notes of this meeting" crisis meetings with the legal department and their press department, as we type, in order to work out the best strategy of how to mitigate the fallout for the uni.

Wasn't the Master of Jesus, Sonita Alleyne, on that petition of the Good Law Project? I think there are some new names as well - but I am not archiving it like Benjamin Ryan is. Anyway, I think they should suspend that now there is an investigation - they are still getting signatures, but many are having a laugh:

That struck me too, but I guess people who know or knew him just don't know to get involved in this awful mess, particularly after he called the cops on a journalist.

If I got splashed all over the papers I just know which twats from my past, and family, would happily phone the DMail themselves. But the Daily Mail would sniff them out themselves fairly quickly as well once they started digging.

There isn't even any 'talking but only anonymously' going on.

At some point the more conspiracy based sites will start to have a conspiracy field day out of the complete lack of verifiable anything, and at that point it will be game over for JA.

From the latest Daily Mail article:

[Professor Arday] asked that we attribute the quotes to 'a source close to Professor Arday'.

'The reference to "Seven Up" was used informally as a shorthand illustration of the concept. It was not intended as a literal comparison and should be understood in the context in which it was made. Attempts to present the phrase in isolation risk creating a misleading impression of both the initiative and Professor Arday's comments,' Professor Arday said." 😱

Now it is a published book that is disputed - this is more from Benjamin Ryan, Independent investigative journalist

Prof Jason Arday repeatedly claimed that he was the author of a book called Being Young, Black and Male: Challenging the Dominant Discourse, which was said to explore stereotypes about black masculinity. The book was listed in his biography description in published essays as well as promotional material for speaking events, and was attributed to the Palgrave Macmillan publishing house. In reality, it never made it to the shelves and was abandoned by the publisher several years ago. The revelation raises questions over his employment at the University of Cambridge. To apply for a professorship at Cambridge, applicants need to submit an extensive portfolio of work, which includes a complete bibliography of essays, journals and book chapters.

That’s just so bonkers! It’s the easiest thing in the world to look up if a book has been published. And it seems extra bizarre that of all the people around him who were fawning over him and saying he was the best in the world and inviting him to do talks and TV shows, none wanted to get a copy of this book, look up reviews to see if they should buy it, ask him if he had author copies etc?

I’m really starting to think the most plausible explanation is the one where he’s been on a massive pisstake the whole time and was just having a laugh to see how much ludicrous bollocks he could get away with. And the grift was so successful he didn’t know how to get off.

As for no one coming forward from his past, maybe his name is not real either.

I'm surprised that the Daily Mail has so far seemingly not been able to find anyone who either knew JA during childhood or young adulthood

Five minutes with the electoral registers on Find My Past reveals the Arday family's long term London address. I can't believe journalists haven't discovered it and gone asking questions in the neighbourhood.

I won't post the address here, but it's interesting in view of his claims to athletic prowess....

I think all this criticism is harsh after Jason's successful landing after the Artemis mission.

Actually I remember various people who were found by the journalist who investigated the Salt Path hadn’t said anything up to that point.

I've heard that the reason he's not made any statement recently is because he's been a stowaway on the SpaceX rocket that's crashed into the moon. Apparently he's been able to walk away unharmed and with his superpowers will be back on earth in a day or two to tell us about the adventure.

I just signed it as Walter Mitty and someone else has signed as ArdayIsAFraud. It's going swimmingly.

That book was supposed to be 'coming out soon' in January 2022 (https://nowandmen.net/episode/jason-arday)

It's usually very easy to use Google to find a book that has been published, no matter how spectacularly obscure.

Nelson Mandela University seems to have pulled a page about him:
https://crishet.mandela.ac.za/Staff-Associates/Jason-Arday comes up as 'page not found'.

I would bet money on the university system collapsing in the next 30 years. It's too expensive for the financial benefits for the students. Scholarship itself has been seriously compromised in humanities and sciences. Employers are finding candidates with degrees are poorly skilled and in many cases even unable to innovate or think creatively. And many schools have far too much expensive infrastructure .

It’s only functioning due to the usury schemes that are fees-for-shit-teaching and rents-for-over-priced-housing, all intertwined with governments, university institutions and university board salaries.

The nastiest shit I ever met was a university vice-chancellor who wanted his under-funded local council to subsidise his institution.

I totally agree with you that it was ridiculously easy to find the family address.

"but it's interesting in view of his claims to athletic prowess...."

I'm not too sure if you're saying that this presents evidence for or against his claims?

On Reddit there was a thread where a person claimed to be a former student of his at Roehampton.

He said that Arday had claimed to have played for Crystal Palace Academy:

"He taught me BTec Sport at college (briefly) in 2011. He must've been pretty young then.

I remember quite liking him, came across as pretty nice and charming. Even then he loved an anecdote, I can't remember the illiterate claims but he said to us he played for Crystal Palace as a youth but got injured which derailed his career."

The family home is around five and half miles north of the Crystal Palace ground in a straight line.

He added: “Nor should it be mistaken for an acceptance of the narratives that have surrounded me. It is simply the decision of someone who has reached the limits of what any person should reasonably be expected to endure.”

Convenient!

When even the Guardian are asking serious questions about ‘Professor’ Arday, instead of defaulting to a knee-jerk response of dismissing all the allegations against him as a racist witch-hunt conspiracy, you know he’s in deep shit. If he’s got any sense he will resign, and do so very soon.

If I am reading it correctly, though, they don’t seem to be saying he wasn’t a professor there, just that he’s not and has never been a visiting professor there.

Maybe ‘Professor, visiting’ rather than ‘Visiting Professor’ ??
