Year 6 residential costs

KingoftheNorth1 · 06/10/2025 14:52

Would anyone be willing to share how much their schools charged last year / are charging this year for school residential trips. Particularly keen to hear what people had to pay for Year 6 activity type weeks.

Totally get that costs have sky rocketed, plus insurance is likely very steep so, so please don't get me wrong, I'm not unrealistic, but just trying to work out if the almost £850 we have been asked to fork out is fair/representative! Haven't been through the process before so don't have any particular frame of reference.
TIA to anyone happy to divulge!

Blimey! Ours was £340 for 5 nights Mon - Fri (back Sat morning!)

BendingSpoons · 06/10/2025 15:46

The trip was £230 for 3 nights last year. Costs not released yet as it depends on numbers going, but should be vaguely similar.

£850 is huge!

Thunderdcc · 06/10/2025 15:46

£375 for Mon-Fri on IOW including coach and ferry, a couple of weeks ago.

AppleKatie · 06/10/2025 15:51

£350 2 nights 2 hours away and I still think that’s too much. I’ve paid but I absolutely would not have paid any more, not when scout camp still exists 🤣🙈

Tagalogalog · 06/10/2025 15:52

That is barmy. My school WhatsApp would blow up if they asked for £850 for a y6 activity week.

Just for comparison, my dd did a school citytrip in peak summer time to Europe for 4 nights, this included coach to the airport, flights, then they stayed in a 3* hostel central to the city with en-suite bathrooms and all food and entertainment was included. That was £900.

GivingUpFinally · 06/10/2025 15:53

£390 for 4nights/5days including coaches and ferry. Going next week. Think there's around 60 kids going. Thought it was a bargain for what's on offer with the activities they will be doing.

planestrains · 06/10/2025 15:56

£385 for two night which also includes transportation costs. Paid by installments

Aquabluemouse · 06/10/2025 15:56

£380 for two nights

SirHonkers · 06/10/2025 15:56

£270 for Tues - Fri in London.

LittleBearPad · 06/10/2025 15:56

I thought you were going say it was abroad as that’s very steep. You won’t be the only parents to balk at almost a grand for a year 6 trip. Can you find out what last years cost?

StillFeelingTired · 06/10/2025 16:01

£850?? My year 11 is going to France for 5 days and that’s 900. I think year 6 residential activity thing on the Isle of Wight was around 300 ish I think?

Tiredofwhataboutery · 06/10/2025 16:01

Ours was cut down to 2 days 1 night and was £70.

ThatGreenFawn · 06/10/2025 16:03

£650 for 4 nights, about an hour away from home.

Sleepeatcrochetrepeat · 06/10/2025 16:07

Ouch, that’s a lot op!
5 years ago it was £350 including coach trip of about 90 mins, 4 nights at PGL.
2 years ago it was £350 but we had to arrange our own transport, so another parent booked a coach that we each paid £30 towards. So £380.
Last year it was £450 and the parents from that year group were getting cross.
This year they’ve cancelled it completely and are looking at other options. A friend who works at the school said they couldn’t bring the cost under £500 no matter what they did and they didn’t believe parents would pay.

By contrast, a recent trip to France for ds12 (4 nights) was £410, including all costs. £850 sounds insane!

Cyclebabble · 06/10/2025 16:08

I live in Norfolk. 850 is high. I understand activities and insurance are expensive, but I still think that is excessive.

Ineedanewsofa · 06/10/2025 16:12

3 days, 2 nights, £375, so I not much cheaper that yours on a per night basis.
Why are they going for so long?! DCs previous school does a trip to IOW and even that is only 3 nights!

APurpleSquirrel · 06/10/2025 16:19

Last year was £250 for Mon-Fri fully catered, South West school to an activity centre about an hour away.
Our school go every year from Yr3-6 together (tiny village school) but DD missed it last year due to breaking her leg!

DrLottie · 06/10/2025 16:23

My daughter is Y6 and her trip will be £215 for 2 nights. £850 is NUTS!!

amilliondreamsofsleep · 06/10/2025 16:23

£400ish, Monday - Friday, about three hours away. Price is similar to what I paid three years ago for my eldest but I think a couple of activities are cheaper alternatives.

IndigoFlamingooo · 06/10/2025 16:25

Ours was £600 for 4 nights at an outdoor education centre approx 2 hours away from school. This was 10 years ago so dread to think of what it could be now!

Favouritefruits · 06/10/2025 16:25

Last year my sons weekend residential cost £210 which I thought was a bit steep for two nights in a youth hostel! No way would I pay £850 even if I could afford it. That’s ridiculous and the school should be ashamed of themselves £850 for most people is massive!

TeenLifeMum · 06/10/2025 16:28

That’s mad. I’m paying £1250 for a week skiing in Italy for dd in year 10. But that’s totally optional and only 20% of the year group goes, whereas year 6 leavers is technically optional but generally expected. I wouldn’t have paid £850 per child (I have twins). Ours was £350 for 4 nights at an activity centre - mill on the brue. I imagine it’s more now as that was 4 years ago. That said, dd1 did the ski trip 4 years ago and it’s the same price this year.

MuffinCCHeeler · 06/10/2025 16:29

£340 for 3 nights in London. We had to drop off and pick up.

RightOnTheEdge · 06/10/2025 16:30

Wow, I'm so glad my dc's school wasn't as expensive as some of these, I never would have been able to afford it.

Ours was £180 for three days. £100 if on fsm.

My dd has just brought a letter home about a trip to Belgium and France and that is only £280.

imnotsickbutimnotwell · 06/10/2025 16:35

My child is recently back from the Y6 trip to PGL, we are in the south east and it was about £550. For 20+ years the school took Y6 to the IOW every year but had to stop 2 years ago as the cost was getting way too high (ferry cost and cost of coach and driver for a whole week).
