Will this VAT on private school fees be limited, or could it go on other stuff too? Thinking about tuition and swimming lessons.

Not all private schools are better than all state schools. The reason many people go private is because their local state schools are rubbish/failing and their local private school is better than those, but still not as good as good state schools. Sadly most people don’t have access to high achieving state schools like Kier Starmer does for his kids.

Sole traders are unlikely to be affected as likely under the VAT threshold (£85k), so individual tutors unlikely to be affected, but many larger businesses would be potentially.

I also think it is only fair that university fees should be taxed as well - you don’t need to go, so surely that is as much a luxury as private primary/secondary.

given how little is likely to be raised from those primary and secondary schools alone, the only way this policy will generate money is if they broaden the policy to encompass all forms of non-essential education.

I don’t think we need to burden our young people with more debt.

Universities are state run institutions. Private schools aren’t. They are a luxury. Plus doctors, nurses, teachers, police and social workers need a degree. So if it’s a luxury to go we’ll have no key public workers.

Universities are state funded and regulated but autonomous in many ways. It isn’t that clear cut. Many degrees are not strictly necessary and come at a big cost to the tax payer, if never repaid. Of course, many socially useful jobs that are not higher paying though are required. The uni sector is also fat and bloated in some ways and not all students are getting fair value.

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow a good education should never be considered a luxury.
