Second hand Eton uniform: super small?

DoMyBest · 15/07/2023 10:00

Looking for a second hand Eton College uniform for DS no2 (I posted for no1 last year and a brilliant mumsnetter kitted me out) who is tiny: he has the body size of a 10 year old. If there are any (ideally London-based) mums of boys who started at Eton ‘very’ little please DM me. Thanks.

This is a fake thread no?

Ah the eccentricities of the British upper classes. Second hand clothes, holey jumpers and shoes, mismatched furniture (aka family heirlooms and antiques) and only a few pounds in the bank (wealth tied up in land, country piles and horses). Living frugally is a sign of being posh (well only in this country) and builds character (and the Empire) Off to the best schools they go and then they end up running the country

You missed the 18th century slave ownership

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 25/07/2023 21:27

Feels the need to point out that if no one bought new uniform, there would be no second hand uniform.

viques · 25/07/2023 21:28

And I thought this was a not very successful subtle boast thread about having two kids at Eton.

heyho.

not much to boast about given the utter plonkers the place has produced who have been running the country recently

hivetoo · 25/07/2023 21:51

Golly.

Lots of dislike for looking to have your children in a good education.

I'd most definitely send my children to Eton if finances (and location) allowed.

Second hand uniforms are a great idea and certainly environmentally friendly.

But it’s not really about the education is it? It’s about the connections and old boys network that come in handy later in life

abmac95 · 21/07/2023 08:28

Just wondering why you aren't getting a new one?

If the reason is you can't afford it surely it is unfair to send your child to a school where he will be the 'poor kid' and will always be surrounded by people who have more than him (making him feel second best/less deserving).

Speaking from experience btw. Not intending to be nasty at all.

It's how the rich stay rich

hivetoo · 25/07/2023 22:03

@geoger a wonderful way to build connections too.

This thread 😄 - British values in action.

Xiaoxiong · 26/07/2023 10:36

@DoMyBest maybe this thread is best moved to the Boarding Schools board, which was set up precisely because of the repeated derailing of threads like yours which is just asking about secondhand uniform.

@Namechangedforthis25 has it in one. Change the name Eton to Christ's Hospital in the OP - which has an equally difficult to source uniform, and fees not far off Eton's - and you would have had relevant replies, not on whether you should send your kids there, whether it's a terrible place, whether you've made the thread up, etc.

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllanty · 26/07/2023 10:50

"Christ's Hospital is unusual among British independent schools in that the majority of the students receive bursaries." around 70% I think?

It just shows the permenent damage some old Etonians have done to a school. Unfortunately the prejudice is for lifetime particularly for Eton.

Xiaoxiong · 26/07/2023 12:06

Yep - and demonstrates that the fees, bursary status, politics or antics of old boys who attended 40 years ago or anything like that has nothing to do with OP wanting second hand uniform.

OP wanting an Etonian second hand uniform

Difference is that Christ's Hospital provides its uniform for all DC (other than PE kit) and that you can buy secondhand from Wardrobe.

BustopherPonsonbyJones · 26/07/2023 14:05

I hope you found someone to help, OP, and that your son enjoys his time at Eton. It’s good to use second hand options whether you are at an independent school or a local academy. Honestly, the jealousy on this thread comes across as deranged. How anyone can take offence from someone trying to help the environment and save money, I don’t know.

AgathaSpencerGregson · 26/07/2023 14:07

EmmaGrundyForPM · 25/07/2023 19:10

Some parents must buy new though? Otherwise there wouldn't be anything second hand.

DD asks her housemistress if she has anything in her size. If she doesn’t and I can’t get a hand me down from a mate we buy new.

I sense disapproval not jealousy.

I'm not jealous 🤣

If I had all the money in the world I wouldn't send my child somewhere where they're conditioned to look down on others and generally behave like entitled knobs. From reading this thread I imagine the reasons the OP wants secondhand is because she doesn't want to be considered as 'new money'

F0Xintherain · 26/07/2023 14:15

Must fit in with the other toffs. Hunting anyone?

How posh are you Agatha?
