Boarding Sixth Form Film Studies

My DD is looking for a full boarding sixth form that has a strong film department. Somewhere with good facilities in film studies! Somewhere also with a great english department.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

@drinkteaandrelax , Royal Hospital School in Suffolk switched from A level Film Studies(Sept 2020) to BTEC in Creative Digital Media, which includes critical analysis of film, as well as the production side. They also have several film clubs.
@usedtobeboss3 and @IcedWater might be able to give you some insights into the English department.

@Piggywaspushed teaches film, she might be able to help.

This won’t be easy to find. I couldn’t find Film at Hurtwood School which was the very obvious place to look.

However, Stowe School and Bradfield College do it. Having looked around both for DD a few years ago, Stowe looks stronger for arts subjects. Not sure about English.

I would say Film isn’t on offer at a great many boarding schools. So not sure you will have a huge choice.

Piggy isn’t boarding school though.

Heathfield at Ascot does it. DD went there. Great art department - photography very strong.

And Rochester College. They say they are no1 for film.

Oratory1 · 08/03/2021 14:37

Bradfield College

Piggywaspushed · 08/03/2021 18:16

Hi! I have a network I belong to and can research this. I know of a number of private schools but not boarding at the moment.

Piggywaspushed · 08/03/2021 18:20

How can you be number 1 for film? I may nick this as my slogan!

Best boarding school. That’s what they say. Not much competition though. Even Millfield doesn’t offer it. Few do.

Hurtwood House? Very strong in Arts and their theatre complex is amazing. Not cheap though Shock

Piggywaspushed · 08/03/2021 18:43

What a strange boast!

I ahve started asking around OP.

Piggywaspushed · 08/03/2021 18:49

I am a bit wary of Rochester. I know school websites are often awful and not regularly updated but the info online about Film Studies is very out of date. It has not been updates since pre reform of the A Level, three years ago.

Piggywaspushed · 08/03/2021 18:52

Hurtwood doesn't offer Film Studies.

PresentingPercy · 08/03/2021 20:34

I was surprised Hurtwood didn’t. Seems an odd omission. I cannot comment on RIC. I’d never heard of it but possibly worth investigating. I wouldn’t go there over Stowe though.

Monsterandmonkey · 09/03/2021 12:01

It's not boarding, but didn't know if you knew about this?

RIC is boarding in 6th form. Is that what you are querying?

Comefromaway · 09/03/2021 13:37

Tring Park offer Film Studies.

Comefromaway · 09/03/2021 13:41

Arts Ed also do Film Studies

Comefromaway · 09/03/2021 13:42

However Arts Ed don't have their own boarding facilities. 6th form students go into lodgings.

PresentingPercy · 09/03/2021 15:04

Tring Park doesn’t offer A levels as a standard school does. It’s a performing arts school. Performing being what it’s all about. It’s near me. I know it.

Comefromaway · 09/03/2021 15:08

I have many friends whose children go or went there. My own daughter went to visit it. I know its a performing arts school. If film studies is important to the OP's daughter they may well consider applying somewhere like that on the acting or commercial music track.

Piggywaspushed · 09/03/2021 15:27

Bishop's Stortford College in Herts has swapped from media to film A level, which is a trend. It is day and boarding.

Piggywaspushed · 09/03/2021 15:35

I know nothing about the place but Wycliffe College in Glos offers it. I do know the head of media there who is a good chap.
