Does anyone have any experience of Latymer in Hammersmith? We are having a tour on Friday with regard to the 7+ entry next year and would appreciate any insight. DS1 is an August child so I would also be interested to know whether they take age into account on application. Many thanks.

Shameless bump for the lunchtime crowd.

Can't help from personal experience but nephew is going there in Sept (Yr 7) and sis was v impressed with it!

foxinsocks · 25/04/2007 13:18

we have a friend in your neck of the woods who ended up discounting the schools because her son was a July baby and she (and the school) felt he stood no chance in the 7+! Don't know if Latymer select on that exam.

suejonez · 25/04/2007 13:20

yes I have two nephews there now - one (now 14 been there since 7 or 8) one now 17 since 13. Not sure I understand your quesiton about age?

suejonez · 25/04/2007 13:22

oh actually I do see whatyou mean sorry a bit slow there! I don;t htink they do, sorry but they do take into account the interview - my nephew got in on borderline results because of a pleasant interview (he is a very nice boy and plays a lot of sport)

they are both doing very well. I think the school has changed a bit since the oldest started and has become a lot more academic/competitive but they both seem to like it there. I have had some contact through the rowing side as I live locally and support them when they row and the parents seem nice enough.

singersgirl · 25/04/2007 13:37

A friend of mine has just toured Latymer for 7+ for next year for her son, also now Y1. I'm sure she said that they do take age into account; however, as her DS has a December birthday, it's not such a big deal for her.

Another parent apparently asked if they would take into account the difference between state and prep school candidates and they don't - the teacher showing them round said that, unsurprisingly, the vast majority of the children they take at 7 are from pre-preps, though at 11+ the intake from private and state schools is much more even.

My SIL told me that for St Paul's Girls (a completely different school, of course, and for 11+) they apparently sit the girls by age, as they take it into consideration in the grading.

Azure · 25/04/2007 13:40

That's useful information, many thanks.

Azure, don't know anything about that particular school, but I do know from experience of dd1 sitting North London consortium at 7+ and at 11+ that they weight the results according to the child's age. This is also the case with 11+ entry for selective state schools. I don't know exactly what algorithm they use (though you could score points by asking!) but it seems to work. DD1 is a summer birthday too and got places for every school she applied for, at both stages.

The Latymer web site actually recommends coaching for state school candidates, so they're not disadvantaged by the competion from the pre-prep coaching factories. I seem to remember the web site suggests ways to prepare your child for the exam, which might help your DS.

If only we knew what was going to happen...in terms of the drug abuse at Latymer. Whilst some will say that drugs are everywhere, why is it that Latymer Upper is always in the media due to drug abuse? Please be careful everyone.

I'm curious about people who reignite zombie threads, @pkim123 you post old negative news stories about Latymer regularly, what's your beef with LU?

I just like reporting the facts as reported by the media outlets.

The first story is 15 years old, the second - 12 years old and the third is 4 years old.... As you say, they're out in the public domain, easily found via a Google search by any prospective parent so it's not exactly a smoking gun. Posting negativity about Latymer seems to be ALL that you do. Odd no?

Do you have any personal experience of the school that you want to share? Otherwise the constant bashing you dish out solely focussed on this one school does make it look like sour grapes on your part, maybe they didn't offer your DC a place or something?

This is not the only thing that I comment or post on. You've obviously taken the time to search my username, so that's obvious from the search results. What's odd is that you seem so focused on what I post.

As I said, I'm curious about posters who reignite zombie threads. I've seen your name next to negative posts about Latymer for quite some time now and I'm curious as to why. You haven't answered my q's though so guessing your 'public service' in repeatedly posting these eons-old, publicly available news stories is fuelled by animus towards the school. You don't say that you have a child there or any personal experience.

There are old news stories about loads of schools, any prospective parent can dig around and find old news stories but what matters is what the school is like now *no? I hope your DCs are happy at whatever school they got an offer from but maybe stop bashing a school that thousands of pupils and their families care about when you clearly know nothing about the place.

Please post three drug abuse articles which are focused on just one London independent school besides Latymer Upper. I've tried it. Let me know if you have better success than my attempt.

@OnionToast - it’s not worth it- the obsession this poster has with LU is bizarre!

olafhasmelted · 22/05/2022 11:01

@pkim123 - because you keep asking, I’ve just spent 2 minutes trawling the internet for the other school in Hammersmith. Plenty of sex, drugs and rock and roll stories on them all. I recognise your username from threads on other schools so I look forward to you posting links on the the other schools as well.

Which school has three drug abuse stories from different years? Name one.

OnionToast · 22/05/2022 11:07

Ha! @olafhasmeltedyou've noticed it too? Weird isn't it.

@pkim123have a look at what Latymer does for children at local schools/bursaries, see here-Latymer . Now find me a school who doesnything even close to this.

I'll wait.

I keep telling myself I won’t respond again!
@pkim123 - I am just genuinely curious as to why you post on every LU thread with the same 3 links relating to things that happened years ago.
What is your motivation? Genuinely?
we’re all more than capable of googling and when I chose schools for my DCs I d

olafhasmelted · 22/05/2022 11:16

…did just that.
Where do your DCs go to school out of interest?
