Eton fee assistance

We are considering Eton as an option for DS secondary education. At the moment he is being prepped and we are happy with the progress he is making. We have another 3 years before he would be of the correct age.
i have had cousins that attended Eton and absolutely raved about it, they said it was one of the best experiences they have ever had.
The only problem is with DC 2 on the way we wouldn't be able to afford the fees hence the reason I'm asking how far the assistance goes and what are the requirements. We could try for a scholarship however I need to know all options.....

So you're prepping a child more than 3 years in advance for a school you can't afford to send him to? How about an option of let him learn at his own pace and go to school with his peers without putting the family under stress? Eton is not the be all and end all.

A high percentage of pupils at Eton receive assists with fees but any contribution will be means tested. A scholarship would be helpful but they have changed in recent years are are more of a prestigious title than financial subsidy than they used to be.

All independent senior schools offer bursaries but expect a forensic examination of your finances.

If you have significant equity in your home, substantial savings or stocks/shares etc it will be expected you use these before you obtain a bursary.

I am FM for a London prep school - we feed Eton and other boarding schools and assess bursaries for our pupils. I wouldn't apply for one given how invasive the process is!

I have friends whose son is on his way to Eton. He has to sit the pre-test this term (yr6). Have you already registered and entered your DS?

£15k a year fees are very different from £35k a year fees

It doesn't sound like you can afford it. If you can afford prep school then you are unlikely to get a significant bursary. Why put yourself through the stress when there are good schools you can afford?

If you are in prep school, Eton protests take place in Michaelmas term of Year 6.

How does your second DC effect affordability? Bate in mind that the first few years children cost very little to maintain. The first the first few years of prep school fees are quite minimal. And it's only five years of Eton. Your incibewull orobably increase in that tineas well. There is also still time to save up some money. Don't forget that scholarships may come with a small discount. You can always renodtagage to release equity etc. Most people I know have funded school fees by taking loans and selling stuff.

The boys have to sit an exam in Yr 6 and pass that before they are eligible to sit the 13+ exam.

I have another friend with 2 boys at Elton and another on the conveyor belt. The competitive nature of the parent/tutor coaching for those scholarship places is in the super league. I know I sound negative, but Eton/Harrow et al parents get the wheels in motion at Year 3.

Eton is known for also giving assistance to families who are middle class earners of up to 80k so they have a wide variety of backgrounds there. I'm really just asking if anyone has either experienced this or knows of anyone who has?

Scholarships are nominal.

A bursary would be your only hope. But they are confidential so I doubt anyone is going to talk about how much they get. You would have to arrrange to see the bursar.

Ds will be going in 2019. We didn't tutor him at all. We went to an open afternoon, then took him for his test last November. The only preparation was me sponging his school uniform with a napkin in Costa in an attempt to make him look less grubby. So whatever the financial situation, tutoring now is probably overkill 😀

The worst part is, I don't know anything about Eton, I was just being nosey

We didn't tutor either and our sin gained a place.. Fretting about a Bursary outcome too....fingers crossed...!!
