There is a brilliant book by James Fenton (I think it is called "An Introduction to English Poetry) and it explains all this stuff brilliantly. I bought it for my 14 year old as a stocking filler at Christmas thinking that it might help him with his English homework and GCSE coursework.

It was not the most popular item in the stocking but he has been referring to the book!
