Has anyone got any ideas for this homework that my 12 year old son received:-

"Choose a quality of water and make something that demonstrates your understanding of how that quality can be related to either god or baptism"

Quantity or quality?

Piffle · 13/02/2006 20:15

purity, natural abundance, the wetting of the head, holy water?

WigWamBam · 13/02/2006 20:15

One of the qualities of water is cleansing, and baptism is intended to cleanse the soul.

SorenLorensen · 13/02/2006 20:15

I have absolutely no idea what that means but I'll bump for you. There are some religiously-minded Mumsnetters who may be able to help (not me, I'm a heathen )

SorenLorensen · 13/02/2006 20:16

But "make something" - what, literally, with water? What - a font? That would take a lot of yoghurt pots and sticky-backed plastic.

SorenLorensen · 13/02/2006 20:17

Am I being really dense here - the question makes no sense to me at all.

CaptainDippy · 13/02/2006 20:17

Water comes in three forms -

water

steam / vapour

ice

These are like the three parts of the trinity - God / Holy Spirit / Jesus

God / Holy Spirit / Jesus are all the same thing, just as these qualities are one and the same - they take on different forms, but they are all water - Just as the Holy Spirit and Jesus are are all God.

Does that make any sense? Does that help??

CaptainDippy · 13/02/2006 20:19

Make a quick collage - find some pics of water / ice and steam and then stick them in the cut-out word - GOD

helsi · 13/02/2006 20:20

well - lets think logically. The qualities of water as has been said is to cleanse, quench thirst, give life, to purify etc etc. I will now have a think of how this relates and shows his understanding of God and/or baptism. Bear with me!!

Fauve · 13/02/2006 20:21

CaptainDippy, did you just make that answer up? It's very clever - I'm completely flummoxed.

CaptainDippy · 13/02/2006 20:23

No I didn't make it up - It's true!!

tassis · 13/02/2006 20:24

well i was a Religious and Moral education teacher until about 15 months ago and I have no idea what that homework is about...

WigWamBam · 13/02/2006 20:25

Maybe you could make use of John 4:13 ... "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed the water I give him will become to him a spring of water welling up to eternal life".

CaptainDippy · 13/02/2006 20:25

LOL

CaptainDippy · 13/02/2006 20:26

I think you should dig a well in your back garden!!

helsi · 13/02/2006 20:32

Right - hope I am on the right lines but if I was to choose one of the qualities of water I would choose CLEANSING and I would relate it ot BAPTISM rather than God for the issue here.

Ok. I would start by saying something like Baptism comes from a Greek word meaning to dip or immerse in water.
One of the qualities of water in every day life throughout time has been to cleanse and wash e.g. we use water to clean ourselves, clothes, houses, cars etc (keep it in language of a 12 yr old if possible).
Baptism gives us the feeling of cleansing and therefore in baptism water is symbollic to show us that God washes away our sins and gives us a fresh new start.

SorenLorensen · 13/02/2006 20:35

But the homework is to "make something" - maybe Captain Dippy's collage?

netmum, do you have the phone numbers of any other parents of children in your son's class? Can you ring and ask what they're doing? That's what I do when we're stuck with ds1's homework.

CoolTurkey · 13/02/2006 20:35

Qualities of water - colourless, wet, scentless, tasteless.
Hmmm!! All relevant to religion imho

CaptainDippy · 13/02/2006 20:38

Religion - Yes.

Christianity - No!!

helsi · 13/02/2006 20:39

yes I am coming onto the making bit. I was just trying to make the relation between a quality and baptism make sense. we could do with coming up with something really bizarre but clever. Wait a moment. I might get a brainwave.

Thanks for all your answers already. The teacher did give an example of what someone made last year, a fountain! Not too sure about that. I know DS's friend has made a font. Not sure that really answers the question though. Liking the collage. Especially since it has to be in on Friday.

Collages are always good - and easy - Glad I could be useful - Perhaps my brain is not so fried after all!!
