Today I am learing about sentence structure.

subjects, verbs, objects, comlements and adverbials.

subject I
verb leaned
adverbial presumably happily

If I've got it wrong I blame my school.

Beetroot · 07/02/2006 23:00

I (subject)
Leaned (verb)
on the stick (adverbial)
Again (adverbial)
Happily (adverbial)

no object? really?

Beetroot · 07/02/2006 23:02

OP posts:
Beetroot · 07/02/2006 23:03

although one would think stick was the object but appaernlty not

OP posts:

oddity...
thought it'd be the natural next bit of the sentence after subj/verb.
ah well, that's my self-taught grammar in the bin!

Beetroot · 07/02/2006 23:05

You can get a bit too deep into this grammar lark I think, beety. (You could do with a portable permanent spellchecker though )

How is DS2's sleep this week btw?

roosmum · 07/02/2006 23:09

what are you learning from beety?

So, supposing the sentence was "I gave the stick to him" - is "the stick" the object? Or is it "him"? Or neither?

(I actually did parsing (???) 40 years ago or so - when I went to primary school we still had arithmetic books with eg 2¾ yards of lace @ 1/11¾d a yard, lol - but have forgotten pretty much all of it except that gingerly is not an adverb.)

blimey I thought I was good at English but this looks like Chinese to me!

JanH · 07/02/2006 23:39

Come on, JT, 2¾ yards of lace @ 1/11¾d a yard, in your head!

No, it's an adjective (I think) - you would touch his penis (only if you absolutely had to, and wearing gloves) in a gingerly way.

JanH · 07/02/2006 23:47

Hm - seems now to be both adj and adv according to OUP - it wasn't when I were a lass .

JoolsToo · 07/02/2006 23:48

is it 5s 3d?

Using my trusty calculator I got it out to 5.4427083 shillings, JT

JoolsToo · 08/02/2006 00:01

I did it by fractions but it took me ages! (and 1p out apparently!)

JanH · 08/02/2006 00:06

Never thought I would say this but thank god for decimalisation

Twiglett · 08/02/2006 06:42

Jan .. Do (question) you (object) want (verb) that (thingamijigg) sink (annoying object under my table) .. happy to incl delivery in price

LadyTophamHatt · 08/02/2006 08:39

I have never been able to get my head around all this stuff and now it seems even more complicated.

I am a thickhead!

Beetroot · 08/02/2006 08:50
