Teachers striking on 5th October!

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 23/09/2011 21:11

We've had a letter home today saying that some teachers in ds's school will be on strike on 5th October. Luckily neither of our ds's classes are affected.

I thought that public sector workers were being balloted over striking on 30th November about the proposal to change their pensions again, but I kew nothing about the 5th October.

Anybody else affected by this?

Phew I thought was going to be defending teachers on my own and I'm not even working in education

Feenie · 24/09/2011 12:31
Smile

Think you are probably right, Takver.

spanieleyes · 24/09/2011 12:35

If the trains/buses go on strike you make alternative arrangements so you can go to work.
If teachers go on strike you make alternative arrangements so you can go to work.

oh tectime, can you not see it's your own time you're wasting with these posts? you have the potential to achieve far more, but you need to see that for yourself

Feenie · 24/09/2011 12:51

I have reported your post, tectime.

I wouldn't expect sympathy from parents who made blanket posts without referring to issues that they clearly don't understand, no - I'd feel sympathy for them.

spanieleyes · 24/09/2011 12:52

But if the buses/trains go on strike you have to make alternative arrangements, why is that any different? You have to because teachers-as with practically everyone else in this country -have the right to strike. it's not as if we do it often!

wook · 24/09/2011 13:00

tectime how rude!

Like many teachers, I'm also working parent and I sympathise fully with myself and every other working parent in the country who is taking an undeserved battering from this government on behalf of a small bunch of billionaires

Wook, apologies for any offence

But how can expletives from chibi (a teacher) go un-noticed by you all, but jibe cause such indigantion!!!

tectime · 24/09/2011 13:04

apologies for typos on last post, here goes again

Wook, apologies for any offence.

But how can expletives from chibi (a teacher) go un-noticed by you all, but my jibe causes such indignation!!!

Feenie · 24/09/2011 13:05

I can 100% guarantee you that your post will be gone by the end of today - it's a personal attack, and MNHQ will take a Very Dim View.

Expletives are allowed - why (the fuck, obviously) can't teachers swear? We're not at school now, you know.

chibi · 24/09/2011 13:05

given that you clearly think teachers and teaching as a profession are pretty worthless, what would be 'teacher role model material'? cannibal hoboes? kitten harmers? the mind boggles.

Feenie · 24/09/2011 13:07

Not at all sure why you are automatically convinced chibi is male, either - can women not swear now, either? You seem to have a very odd view of Mumsnet, if not the world in general. Confused

Feenie · 24/09/2011 13:08

Chibi, that's the third time today you have made me snort with laughter at my keyboard. Grin

tectime · 24/09/2011 13:08

Feenie

Point taken. I apologise for the personal attack on chibi - if it is personal then I agree that it should be removed.

Though, I still do not understand why expletives are allowable on this site.

Feenie · 24/09/2011 13:10

Because we are grown ups, innit. Grin

Lifeissweet · 24/09/2011 13:12

I get the feeling, tectime, that you take teacher's striking personally. Well it isn't. We are not doing it to inconvenience you. It is our only way to indicate in the strongest possible terms to the Government that we don't want to be fobbed off any more. We have exhausted all other attempts to negotiate. If you want to blame someone for your inconvenience, why not blame the government?

.

NorfolkNChance · 24/09/2011 13:15

Oh joy another strike/teaching bashing thread.

I shall go fetch my whip and flagellate myself in the streets for daring to work in the public sector.

tectime · 24/09/2011 13:19

Lifeissweet

I do not take striking personally. Thatcherite legislation has rendered union composition and power, impotent.

You will not get your way. The public will be irritated by the teachers and the government. However, as teachers are on the frontline - they will feel the ire of parents.

PS, NorfolkNChance, I disagree with your post - but I found it amusing.

NorfolkNChance · 24/09/2011 13:21

I please to aim ow

Feenie · 24/09/2011 13:26

'Our way' is simply negotiation, tectime.

SquongebobSparepants · 24/09/2011 13:30

FYI I am in wales and had no clue there was a strike planned on the 5th, I think it is just one union, The NASWUT (or whatever it is, I can never rememeber) is welsh and planning the 30/11 and most of the rest I know are in NUT or ATL.

If there is no swearing allowed in teaching I quit.

noblegiraffe · 24/09/2011 13:42

If there are plenty of people out there who can teach, why is there a shortage of qualified maths teachers?

I don't think I'm that expendable, tbh.

YummyHoney · 24/09/2011 13:58

Of course teachers are allowed to swear - the worry is that they can't articulate/conduct themselves in a better way.

If teachers had a good command of English, they wouldn't need to swear in order to get their point of view across.

All very worrying indeed........

There are lots of graduates who are looking for work - trained teachers. If you're not happy with your pension arrangements, ,move aside and let a young person have a stab at teaching.

If you're a young teacher, you've got many years ahead of you to save for your own pensions and not expect the government/rest of us to prop you up.

I'm so bored of the fact that nobody's allowed to voice an opinion about anything without being accused of teacher-bashing. If only......
