Yr 3, how much homework ???

Dd1 is in year 3 now and so far doesn't seem to be having any homework at all other than reading books.

Dd2 in year 1 is having more at the mo.

Is this the norm ?? I don't want her to be overloaded but I do think she should be doing some.

erm tonight was list of words ending in "le"
att he weekend it was abotu tooth health
on friday i t was maths
on thurs and tues its 15 mins reading out loud.

and a reading book too

Oh crap, dd is doing nothing like that not even spellings. Think i'll have to have a word with the teacher.

Right will do, will have to be wednesday though now, at college tommorow.

Will ask the mums of the other yr 3 class too.

2o mins Mon, Wed, Thurs nights.

Approx 45mins over hte weekend and none on Tuesday nights!

Also bit of reading twice a week and spellings.

nutty, I have a dd in primary 3 (Scotland),age 6, she just gets reading and occasionally a workbook to accompany it.

Just looked on the BBC site and it said it should be about 1.5 - 2 hours a week. Dd isn't having 2 minutes nevermind 2 hours.

Dd is quite bright too and I don't want her to get bored with what they are doing, which seems to be nothing.

Am thinking i'm not keen on her teacher. They were doing about egyptians and so dd had a look on the web and found a site where you could translate your name into hyroclifics (sp ?) and so she did it and printed it out. Teacher apparently just said 'oh yeah, very clever' . Dd had been really excoited about it too.

One list of spellings per week, last week's was rather scary -ing words where the rule is "short vowel, double the last letter" so things like formatting, caravanning, regretting. One literacy sheet which came home on Wed and had to be returned today. As much reading as they can get through!

Ds has spellings, times tables, 1 literacy and 1 numeracy homework. Plus reading books changed whenever he reads them.

Hmm wouldn't mind if it was just a couple of worksheets really but at the mo it's nothing.

Will definatly be checking out what the other class is getting i think.

My ds1 started year 3 in Sept and so far has had no homework either. He has moved from an infant school to a different junior school and apparently when a parent asked the teacher said she was getting them used to the school and new environment. Personally I think this is a bit of a cop out and am worried ds1 will get out of the homework habit.

i can tell youa ll as a teacher and as a parent i HATE hoemwork
ther is no point to it whatsoever and id ratehr elongate the shcool day na d have private study time

Teacher not there today so couldn't have a word but asked dd if they did their timestables in class and she said NO, they haven't done them at all since they went back

we are having about 10 words for spelling and 1 written piece of work and 1...erm...where she has to do something and then write her findings IYKWIM

My dd mad a maximum of half an hour 4 times a week. We were told that if they had worked for half an hour and the work wasn't finised that was fine, they were to stop. In practice it was often less than this.

She would have spelling to learn, times tables (ditto) work sheets to finish, occasionaly things to make, research to do

DD used to have 15 mins per night in Y3. I'm with Cod. I think homework should be banned, particular for primary level. At senior level there should be private study time.

Why on earth should our children learn that you go to school, do a day's work then bring a couple of hours' worth of work home? Just sets them up for bad habits in their working life if you ask me.

As a year 3 teacher I think homework just for the sake of it i.e meaningless worksheets every week is pointless. And IMO, (at that age) schools do it to please the parents rather than to accomplish anything educational.

I give mine spellings because there are a lot to get through from the lit. strat. I then tell them to read and practice their tables when they can. There is motivation as these tables are quick fire tested twice weekly during mental starters.

Other than that, at the beginning of new topics such as teeth in science, I give them a 'find a fact' brainstorming worksheet which they love. I'll also sometimes ask them to find something out for the next lesson or to watch an episode of Blue Peter which I know has a segment on it that I want to discuss.

I think there is plenty of time for structured homework from Y5 onwards. Y3 is such a culture shock anyway. The lessons are much more structured and there is so much more to learn. I don't want to send 7yr olds home to stress over homework. I want them to go home, relax and come back enthusiastic for the next day.

ds gets a maths sheet once a week and to practise his tables, english once a week (spellings or text using the previous week's spellings), reading books twice a week and a worksheet for the weekend (last week's was to set himself 3 objectives for the term !). It has only really got into a pattern this past week and is supposed to average 20 mins per night.
