Yr 3, how much homework ???

nutcackle · 03/10/2005 22:10

Dd1 is in year 3 now and so far doesn't seem to be having any homework at all other than reading books.

Dd2 in year 1 is having more at the mo.

Is this the norm ?? I don't want her to be overloaded but I do think she should be doing some.

Hi batters,
Your DD will probably have been learning her 2x, 5x and 10x tables in Y2. If she is ok with these then great. If not, concentrate on these. Explain 'times' as 'lots of'. Draw pics to help so for 2x7 draw two baskets with 7 balls in each etc. Also link this to addition and show it as a repeated addition i.e 7+7 (1 lot of 7 added to another lot of 7)

When doing 10x, don'f fall into trap of saying, add a 0. This causes probs when they start doing decimals and wonder why 38.50 is not ten times 38.5 Teach as digits moving one place to the left and the 0 being a place holder.

If she is ok with 2,5 and 10x then start with 4x not 3x. I always do this as they can use their knowledge of 2x to see the relationship. Explain that 4x is double the amount of 2x so therefore the answer should also be double. Show her this using pictures or beter still, beads and baskets. Again, constantly link back to 'lots of' and repeated addition. Having this clear in their mind helps them understand that like addition, the order of the numbers don't matter. Practise turning it around with pictures and beads again.

In my class we learn the 8x before the 3x using the same relationship but her teacher may not be happy with this. After this we do 3x, 6x and 12x.

When we first start, in the autumn term, I don't limit tables to mental maths. I structure it into the lesson where they write 4x3 in their books. Above the 'x' they write lots of and then they draw the calculation using baskets.

Almost all the kids leave Y3 with a secure knowledge of their tables. The important thing is that it doesn't matter if they get the answer wrong occass. as long as they understand what it means and have a method for working out the answer. Too many kids know their tables by rote without having any idea what they mean.

Sorry if this is long. Hope it helps!

There is absolutely no reason for any primary age child not to enjoy maths or to feel that they aren't very good at it.

The Numeracy Strategy and the internet are full of excellent teaching resources and games and IMO maths is one of the most quick-paced and fun lessons of the day!

singersgirl · 05/10/2005 14:59

My DS gets the same as Batters' DD - literacy and numeracy (a workheet for each) on Monday to be handed in by Friday. Also 10 new spellings every Monday for a test on Friday. Reading is supposed to be done regularly, but it's not set as homework - DS would be reading with me and by himself anyway.
Great post on tables, homemama. Not sure DS1 has done any this term. They're working on place value and shapes right now.

LIZS · 05/10/2005 15:02

Tahnsk for that homemama. As one whose ds really doesn't know his tables yet it is good to know where to start and progress.

LadyCodofCodford · 05/10/2005 15:02

cracker of nuts haev you got a result yet

nutcackle · 05/10/2005 16:07

LOL Cod, no, dd's teacher seems to spend more time in meetings than actually in the class.

Parents meeting next week though.

Also have another prob now though. For maths they are all split up into different groups with different teachers. Dd and 2 other kids today came out complainging that their maths teacher told them all they were pathetic and stupid and silly because they didn't get all the work right.

Oh, also asked another mum who's dd was in that class last year and she No they never had homework, ever.

singersgirl, don't worry about that. Place value is fundamental to maths and should be practised at the beginning of each term in all years. It normally runs alongside a particular topic which, if a maths co-ordinator is doing his or her job properly, should be the topic identified as a weak area from the previous year/term.

princesspeahead · 05/10/2005 16:52

no homework this term for my y3 dd as the workload in school is much greater than last year and they feel they are knackered enough. except reading and learning one lot of times tables a week (just 2, 5, 10, 11 x, which they learnt last year, so it is revision really).

mind you our school day is longer than state school (I think) - 8.30 to 4.15 - which backs up cod's point. more school, kick back when they are out of it.

LadyCodofCodford · 05/10/2005 19:35

ds has had to go over his 3 and 4 times tabels for homwork tonight and i not to my horror that they ar not chanthing them ( not att he moment)

no in the mid 1970s in Fife some twat had the idea that chanting was bad and so i learned mine as train stops - i/e 3 6 9 12 15

witht he net result that i nver knew them " justlike that" an dwas a nob at maths forever
ams till very bad at tablesa dn dsses homwork was quite hard...

grrrrrr parents eve issue

My dd finally came home with a home work jotter last night. According to government guide lines they are supposed to spend 90 minutes a week on homework. From this week she will have spellings, 10 minutes of reading per night (we do this normally anyway) and some form of a task to do (this week's is to drawn an Egyptian map. We were also sent a note with the following (quote):-

To comply with government regulations the children should work for an additional period of time every day. Therefore their lunch time is from 12 o'clock until 1 o'clock. (It used to be until 1.20pm)

triplets · 07/10/2005 23:42

Hi all, Just found this thread and I just want to say how much stress homework is causing us. My triplets are 7, 8 in Jan, they are yr3, all in the same class. They have reading every night and on Frid come home with three sheete of homework to be completed by the following Frid, which sounds ok. The 2 sheets of english I can cope with, although Thomas has very poor handwriting and really struggles and gets upset as the other two find it easy. Its the maths that is getting us down. As "older" parents all this key stage 1,2 etc is new to us, yet we have been expected to know all about it, we have felt embarassed having to ask for explanations. The maths last w/end drove us potty, they were all given the same sheet od addition and subtraction, 30 sums on the page, it really outfaced them. The method of doing it was alien to us, for instance we would do 74- 51

23 we have been told that it must be done like this 70+4 50+1

20+3=23
how do you show them then if the bottom figure is higher than the top, example 74-69?
Does anyone know of any good books that would help or even toys that would help, I have looked at the key stage 1 and 2 books in the shops, they show the use of the number line(also new to me) but not this method. Very grateful for some help!

swedishmum · 07/10/2005 23:58

Decomposition. Ask their teacher to explain it - most schools now seem to provide either a booklet or a session for parents. I could try to explain but would get you more muddled over the internet I'm sure! I think the teacher would love it if you asked. You may find something on bbc revisewise site.

Gomez · 08/10/2005 00:02

Cod as a mid-70's school child in Fife the twat from Fife never had an impact on my schooling I can sing them still! And in fact have a maths degree.........

(Although the singing bit might be a red-herring as DH reckons my normal talking voice is singy anyway.)
