any primary teachers about tonight??

tomorrow i face a challenge.
a class of 22 keystage 2 children (all 4 years covered). most have very little English.
i have to fill 2 hours with CDT.

aaaaaggggggghhhhhhhh???????

can anyone give me any ideas pllleeeaaaase?

i presume they have very little expereince, some of them haven't attended school before. and our resources are minimal

no YG, they aren't with us for long enough. everey single lesson has to be aone off!!! it's a nightmare.

Origami- uses pictorial instructions. Get the older children to help the younger children. But call it paper technology!

Try paper sculpture- strips of paper different colours thicknesses to make 3d collages from. Just needs glue and paper. What about some weaving you can vary the difficulty? Or God's eyes made with 2 lollysticks and wool?

Oooo how about giving them a newspaper each and seeing who can build the highest tower that will support an xgramme weight?

i'm not really aroung yorkiegirl...have just popped in to turn off!

remember...no english means NO ENGLISH, so most things are almost impossible to explain.
it's costing me a fortune in printer ink. i keep taking pics of everyhting to help the lesson along.

luckily tomorrow's group are extremely well behaved, thnak goodness. 22 is just way too many. ideally 8 children; 1 teacher and one TA and then we can make progress.

a little update...

i'd taken jam (ginger as it was all we had) and ham (not very suitable as there are a few hindus and muslims but not all). one group did sarnies but there was little design choice to make - they hadn't buttered bread before...it was like making butties with 2 year olds. they made enough for all 22 to share but they weren't very popular.

the other 2 groups did origami dogs and butterflies; too easy for some and too difficult for others, but this is the case with everyhting we do. but they all enjoyed decorating the butterflies, sequins everywhere but mainly in their pockets

next week we are going to do sarnies again, better planned and organised, more choices, more planning and evaluation. etc etc

i think we will also have a go at windmills. it is a 2 hour session and i think i am going to need a 'mother-and-toddler' type activity as back up each week.

a couple have school places so i am hoping there aren't any addmissions and i ahve less than 22

debutante - may try the weaving one week. i couldn't visualise your 3D paper sculpture.

pootle- windmills this week. can't do cooking in this session as we are doing it under investigations.

AQ, where do you work? I'm trying to figure out what kind of establishment would have that wide range of ages and language.

i work in a unit for asylum seekers and refugees. they are only with us a short time, unitl they get a school place near to their house

yes LF.
it used to be a primary school. as well as the grounds we have countryside very close too.

How about going out and collecting twigs and then weaving them with ribbon, string, fabric etc to make an Autumn display. Is this too young?

Are there any shops nearby? Can you go on a visit to the shops to look for foods which are familiar/unfamiliar to them? (don't know if this counts as CDT)

Are you able to do any gardening with them? I realise they are only with you for a short time, but it is a great chance to be outside. You could then draw pictures of all the things that have been planted, laminate them and make labels for the plants. Even better if you can combine this with a visit to a supermarket/shop or bring in vegetables/fruit to show them/let them taste the plants they have planted.

French bread pizzas are good too as you can do lots of choosing and evaluating, but they are easy to make and cook (if you have access to a grill).
