Thought we should all get together and calm each other down/mop fevered brows/hand around glasses of wine etc. We've seen other go through it over the past few months and it will be our turn soon.

DS has just got his AS results which were not too bad. AAAB. The B suprised him as it was for maths and we'd expected a B for french which he had not studied for a few years as sat his GCSE early. He says he will re-sit one of the maths modules and one of French ones to get a higher A Hmm

He (we!) has been considering various Unis over recent months and has visited 4.
PS is all in hand as is extended project (whatever all that is about) but time is creeping by and not long now til his mid Oct deadline (one of his choices is Oxbridge)

There has been so much in the papers over recent days about the lack of places at University at the moment and stories of how so many good students did not get places as they didn't put 'insurance' choices.

How is everyone else coping and how do we get our children to make realistic choices?

oh dear, thats hard Ponders I suppose I should be grateful that I know that I will know within seconds of DS finding out. I can't believe how worried I am about this, never thought it would be like this but I suppose it is because DS has had his heart set on this career choice for over 4 years now so it really is a big thing.

Fingers crossed for all our DC

Ponders, yes, 3 younger ones (so have to go through this torture 3 more times!) Shock aged 15, 4 and 2!

DS has just said that a friend of his has a friend who got a rejection email from Durham today! Shock That is just cruel, now the poor boy will be worrying all night about his grades Sad

Ponders · 17/08/2011 20:33

that does seem cruel Sad

Durham was his first choice? what grades? what was his second choice? I suppose it gives him time to think about his options...I bet he'd rather not have known until the morning though, poor lamb

(I can't imagine going through this in 2027. I wonder where the goalposts will be then Hmm)

oh christ, 2027! With a bit of luck I'll be dribbling in the corner of a nice old people's home then and will be blissfully unaware. DS has promised me that if/when he suceeds in becoming a top QC he will make sure I am in the best care home Grin

Yes, it is bloody cruel, don't know all the details, DS was just on FB with a friend who had been told that by another friend. All DS said was Durham was 1st choice and I think he said Southampton insurance. Imagine Durham wanted AAA but not sure. I had to wonder though about that poster yesterday who said she'd been sending out rejection letters yesterday. What if the post office (for once!) were super efficient and the letters were received today? Horrible Sad

Yes, I thought that about those rejection letters - was hoping they wouldn't have gone out until after last post yesterday.

my eldest did her A levels in 2000 & 2011 seemed pretty bloody far away at that point - soon comes round though (& I'm not in a care home...yet...Wink)

won't be that bad ponders, hoping to leave home around 6.15 to 6.30am and be back by 7am when in theory he SHOULD be able to get his results on school portal.

Catch up tomorrow, lets hope we get some sleep. Seems so odd, some of us have been 'talking' for almost a year now! x

what is STEP? I know I've heard of it but have no idea what it is???

I believe they started off as Cambridge entrance exam papers in different subjects, but now it's just Maths, very hard, marked differently to A level papers (past papers don't have a Mark scheme, just "hints" how to approach questions), required by Oxbridge, Warwick, Bath and maybe Imperial. Apparently they show the way you think rather than what maths you have learned.
DD needs a 2 in either of the papers she sat, alongside the A*AB for her Bath offer, grade boundaries are looking quite high fir the difficulty of the papers she thinks though Sad

oh great news, mos & midnight, well done them Smile

DS2 has gone off to college - they don't get results until 10 & then he will be sure to make me wait for a bit because he is cruel like that (I blame the parents)

DD2 has her place at Lancaster. No idea what her grades are yet, but they're obviously enough.

Good luck to everyone.

Now back to work

Aargh DD2 has just missed her Bath offer and they haven't decided yet whether they'll take her - she's definitely into York though.
