Eugenia Cooney & social media

She is a severely anorexic young woman. She also has a very large YouTube, Instagram and Twitch.

Without a doubt she is a negative influence on those who have an ED and for those who are looking for 'inspo'.

I have reported her content many times (Instagram even has Eating Disorder as an option for reporting), yet she is still there.

She is in the US. In the UK I think should would have been put under Section in order to receive treatment.

One very disturbing aspect is the relationship with her Mother, who is often doing the filming.

Banning her from SM won't help this woman, but might lower the risk of her influencing others.

Thanks @myrtleWilson I have dipped in and out on occasion of one of the ED threads under various names but sometimes I find it really upsetting to read other people’s stories.
DD has been close to dying a couple of times now and seeing EC and others so thin and so unwell but yet still breathing makes DD think I’m lying when I tell her she’ll die.
EC probably feels immortal and everyone else is wrong.

@annonymousse sorry for your loss.
I believe the Cooney family were fairly wealthy before Eugenia became well known so I'm not sure money is the motivation.
She has such a weird relationship with her Mother. It's easy to forget that Eugenia is nearly 30 though, so is responsible for her choices in life, it isn't all her Mothers 'fault' , although she certainly enables the You Tube filming.
Eugenia's brother is diagnosed with autism and very rarely referred to, her Father even less so. Her Mother and Eugenia (and her grandmother until last month) seem to exist in isolation. Why doesn't her father step in? Obviously her (now ex) friends tried with the order, and the Mother went bonkers- now Eugenia is never allowed out alone.

If they banned Eugenia they would have to ban every morbidly obese person from social media too….it’s just as life threatening. It’s down to the parents to educate their children.

Obesity is nowhere near as life threatening as anorexia. What a ridiculous thing to say. Obesity is correlated with dying 10 years earlier. Anorexia kills young women.

@CatJumperTwat

She really is parading around. She knows what she is doing. You only need a quick glance at her social media and YouTube channel. Sometimes she will wear literal underwear and prance around. She bodychecks herself in the camera.

No, she shouldn't hide away. But she has openly said that she doesn't want help. She also referred back to the time she got help and said 'I hope I'll never do that again.'

She is parading and it's really damaging to vulnerable teens who are a huge part of her audience.

Of course she bodychecks herself. She's dying of anorexia. She still has a right to go about her life, including streaming.

She is not responsible for what teenagers do.

Are you serious..

Lemieux7 · 25/07/2023 07:40

But people don't become anorexic because they look at uploads of Eugenia Cooney. She also never talks about food or her ED. She isn't responsible for other people's mental health. The only difference between her and other people on SM with mental health illness is that hers is visible because she's so severely anorexic.

This is very ignorant, you clearly have no idea how fatal anorexia can be, being obese has nowhere near the same risk of death.

"They" can ban who they like on a platform by platform basis there isn't a central bureau of the internet.

I just feel very sorry for her and hope she can find some peace, I doubt she makes much difference to people's recoveries in and of herself really. If you're in a phase where you are seeking out this sort of content you're going to find it somewhere.

What a ridiculous reply. Obesity kills around 3 million people per year, anorexia around 10,000. So yes, if skinny people are banned from social media, surely morbidly obese should be too - they are also encouraging people into thinking their lifestyle is “fine” by the same logic.

FYI, I think neither should be banned. Parents need to do more to educate and help their children.

But there are lots more obese people than anorexics. We normally talk about how deadly something is in terms of mortality per person affected. So using your method of stating how dangerous something is: in the UK we'd be able to say that rabies (25 deaths since 1946 so 0.3 deaths per year) is 166,000 times less deadly than flu. You'd have to be pretty stupid to conclude from this that you'd be better off contracting rabies than flu.

Coconaut · 25/07/2023 10:51

I actually agree neither should be banned by the way, just noting that your method of coming to this conclusion is batshit.

Also (and I speak of horrendous personal experience) it is really really irresponsible to encourage people to believe someone with anorexia is in a similar position in terms of urgent risk to health as someone who is obese.

I know people are trying to get Amberlynn Reid and Foodie Beauty removed from social media.
Life by Jenn passed away a year ago.

Her posts in the last fortnight are ghoulish

Tambatamba · 02/10/2023 03:45

A recovering anorexic commented on her channel that in her experience the condition is physically reversible until you're in mid 20s. But people who get into their late 20s and 30s still with severe anorexia, inevitably die.

There is an argument that after a certain point it should be treated as a terminal disease and the treatment adjusted accordingly. Horrendous anyway, poor woman.
