What have you done with your wedding rings?

My H left in December after I found out about his affair. Very traumatic divorce followed. Still not divorced but getting closer to it and starting to set up a new life for me and my children.

I want to sell my engagement and wedding ring to pay towards work on our new house. I've looked into selling them through an auction as I thought that may bring in the most money as oppose to pawning them. However, they didn't value them as much as I'd hoped.

Has anyone done this recently? Am I just being unrealistic and should have them auctioned? Or is there a more lucrative alternative I hadn't thought of?

I had a quote for selling my engagement, wedding and eternity rings last month. Offer was for £700. The rings cost about £4500 in total when they were bought but I was told by jeweller that you're lucky to get 10% of the original cost back sadly. I'm thinking I might have the diamonds taken out of mine and used to make something else. It seems ridiculous to get back so little but also pointless then sitting in a drawer!

Second hand value is really only weight of stones and gold. Auction can make slightly more than this, but only if there is more than one person who likes the piece. I have bought at auction for exactly this reason and then get insurance valuation done (usually at least 5times auction price sometimes more if style is unpopular).

Ok, thanks for your help. Seems like auctioning them is the way to go. I'll never wear them again, and wouldn't give them to my daughter because of what they represent. So the only option is really to sell them.

I think I'll eventually have my engagement ring made into a necklace or something.
My wedding ring got stuck and had to be cut off at the fire station after the staff at A&E couldn't do it!

Sold my engagement ring and bought some stuff for the house. Smashed my plain cheap wedding ring with a bloody great hammer. Felt so good!

If you don't have paperwork for them and are selling online/ direct, consider going to a local jeweller and getting valuation certificates doing. We have one that charges around £15. This can add quite a chunk to the sale price. A clean and polish at the same time would probably be a similar amount and help present them at their best for sale.

I kept my engagement ring as initially like you it was never getting handed down. However years down the line and I've changed my mind as I want my dc to have some sort of inheritance.

As for the wedding band used it to help pay towards the cost of my new one 😄.

I sold mine to the local pawn broker. I got 50% of what was paid for them.

I bought myself a new wardrobe and hair cut with the cash.

Ex took mine back

Mine originally belonged to ex's maternal great grandmother so I gave them to his mum. I sold other jewellery that he'd given me and bought stuff for the house, but I was uncomfortable about selling his family's items.

Chucked them in a hedge

I put mine in a box thinking I'd eventually decide what to do with them. Then I somehow misplaces said box when I moved house last year.

I sold my wedding, engagement and eternity rings and the money i made was enough for me to design and have made a new eternity ring containing 3 blue saphires and 1 pink saphire that i had always wanted.

A work colleague of mine had hers melted down and remade and the stones reset into a new ring.

My dad had his turned into a different ring for me and my sibling because he said his children were the best thing that came out of my parents marriage. Despite whatever happened between him and my mum, both of us felt it was a lovely gesture and showed that their divorce was nothing to do with us.

5 years later, mine are still dangling on the neck of a little statue I have in my office. Gather they're worth absolutely nothing even though they cost quite a bit, so no idea what to do with them.

I simply didn't want mine so took them to a jewellers and sold them for what I could get. I spent the money on everyday luxuries, to make my day to day life that bit nicer. I consider this a perfect use of the money. I simply didn't want either ring any more and definitely didn't want emotional hassle selling them.

I bought my own ring and his so I don't see why I should sell mine for less than the value. I'm having my wedding ring melted down and made into something special for myself that I will enjoy. I have a friend who makes jewellery.

I sold my wedding and engagement rings and used them to buy food. I gave the two - yes two - eternity rings to my DDs, one each. No idea what they did with them. I told them they could keep them or sell them. It made no odds to me.

I've taken my wedding and engagement ring to a jewellers to have them redesigned as a 'divorce' ring. I loved my engagement ring so much, it was too beautiful to chuck in the river (which I wanted to do many times!). It's costing me hundreds but it meant a lot to me when I received it and no matter what happened after that it still stands as a point in time when I was really happy.

I sold mine privately on eBay for £150 more than a jeweller would have bought it off me for! Then I got Botox with it!! 👌🏼☺️

Lol at chucking them in a hedge! I (Accidentally) left my engagement ring in a pub toilet and never went back for it. Jeweller offered me £20 for the wedding ring so I'll probably give it to the charity shop.

Gave my daughter mine, she lost one in a swimming pool and sold the other.
