Please explain why DH needs to keep 400 old punk LPs when we don't own a record player?

This is a man thing, right?

I refuse to sell my records from the '80's too! (And I don't have a willy)!

spiker · 26/02/2008 21:05

will it make you feel better if I tell you that OUR ENTIRE SPARE ROOM is full of over 4,000 vinyl? and another 4,000 CDs dotted about the house? Mind you we do listen to them (although at times I have instituted a one-in-one-out policy).

If your DH can't be arsed with a record player then I would push him towards ebay, and just keep a few favourites. Can't force him though, if he can't bear to part with them. Storage??

marina · 26/02/2008 21:05

Not a man thing
Dh was cloth-eared philistine until I reacquainted him with the soundtrack of his life
My LPs met a face worse than death. They were filling the loft of my parents' place and they were moving, so I sorted the whole lot into 1000s of mine and a small pile of parental dreck (Vikki Carr, the Spinners, some obscure Eastern bloc ensemble murdering Shostakovich, Julio fecking Iglesias).
Guess which pile was sent to the Hither Green Hospital League of Friends Shop, and which pile was saved for me...

theprecious · 26/02/2008 21:08

sympathy - my dh has two big boxes of empty CD boxes in the shed. We listen to music on itunes and the Cds themselves are in CD books.

WTF ?

motherinferior · 26/02/2008 21:09

Marina

Sounds like the subject of the kind of maudlin C&W I guiltily adore

spiker · 26/02/2008 21:10

DH just went pale

Polgara2 · 26/02/2008 21:10

I have lots of LPs too and have just acquired some more (more of mine I hasten to add) when I cleared out Mum's house and couldn't bear to part with them.

morningpaper · 26/02/2008 21:10

Marina

Mind you it has crossed my mind that if the lounge was flooded it wouldn't be a disaster

unfortuantely we are on a hill

Do not ever let him go to a car boot sale.

Not only will he spend hours flicking through every car-booters records, but he is bound to find 56 that he hasn't got (probably because Kenny Rogers didn't really do punk) and he will have to buy them, then that will be the rest of the day lost while he tries to fit them seamlessly into his current collection.

Likewise, second hand record shops

Blu · 26/02/2008 21:12

Right: back to the furry surge in MI's house, in retreat from head massages and being too old and unmodern to answer q's about newspapers! MN is like a pinball machoine of shock tonight - bouncing from one scary thread to another!

Now - random cables. THERE'S a modern problem. We have random cables, crates of random cables, and more empty shoeboxes than Mrs Marcos full of batteries waiting to be a)tested to see if they are new ones which fell out of the packet or old dud ones and b) put in the battery charger to be ineffectively re-used in toys which require proper Duracell to work properley.

marina · 26/02/2008 21:12

I have only fainted outright once in my life but I honestly swooned when she handed me a carrier bag instead of the fleet of LP cases I had come to collect
Don't do it to him MP, however tempted you are

Blu · 26/02/2008 21:13

MP - but am I right in thinking you have subsidence? A nasty falling-into-abyss accident could occur?

Blu · 26/02/2008 21:16

Marina - sorry, my last post to MP was most insensitive in the light of your Hiterh green Hospital disaster.

Botbot · 26/02/2008 21:16

Ooh, random cables. We have piles of them in every room. Quickest way to wind dp up: refer to them as 'wires'.

morningpaper · 26/02/2008 21:18

I have my own random cables

they might Come In Useful

This is SMS's male friend...

400 punk LPs

Repeat ad infinitum.

Whilst dancing round a burning pile of your whale song CDs.

Spidermama · 26/02/2008 21:21

He's grasping onto his lost youth MP.

I have to say, we have quite a lot of tech house and trance records stored and recently we bought a turntable. Both DH and I have been euphoric and lost in music a couple of times. It was very embarrassing for the kids.

LyraSilvertongue · 26/02/2008 21:24

It's not a man thing. I have hundreds of LPs which I have no intention of getting rid of even though we don't currentl;y have a record player. I'm intending to get one of those convert-your-vinyl-to-MP3 turntables eventually, then everything can go on my iPod. I still won't bin the records though.

spiker · 26/02/2008 21:54

Have you rebuilt your collection marina? DH wants to know. he is a bit perturbed by yr story.

marina · 26/02/2008 21:59

Yes, but it is a shadow of its former self and now mostly on CDs and MP3 files

Some stuff, like my superb Space: Just Blue 70s synth album on blue vinyl, never seen again

The Photos: Barbarellas also gone for good

Tell him to keep his mother away from his vinyl

The bloody hospital is now a Barrett Homes complex, forsooth

mrsruffallo · 26/02/2008 22:00

I agree- not a man thing. I have lots of vinyl and no turn table at all. I will play all of my records again one day......

LyraSilvertongue · 26/02/2008 22:02

Marina, that's so sad! I would have gone to the hospital and demanded them back.

Bubbaloo · 26/02/2008 22:08

I also have a huge vinyl collection, will never play them again, and will never part with them either.
I also have lots of cassette albums which I'll never play or get rid of.

spiker · 26/02/2008 22:09

ooh we had to go look up space/just blue on allmusic, DH hadn't heard of it. check out gemm.com, your blue vinyl dream is available for $20.

MIL keeps her distance from the vinyl. She Knows.

motherinferior · 26/02/2008 22:11

Incidentally, Marina, Mr Inferior has to go and revive his US citizenship (long story) at the Embassy tomorrow. I cannot tell you how many times he has airily repeated - and will doubtless do so again tomorrow - that he was born in the USA.
