Please explain why DH needs to keep 400 old punk LPs when we don't own a record player?

This is a man thing, right?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
SorenLorensen · 04/03/2008 12:51

Ooooh yes. We do not own a record player, yet we have box upon box of LPs and singles (and rare limited release in the special gate-fold sleeve yada yada blah blah I've glazed over EPs).

It was always dh's intention to copy all the LPs/singles/rare blah de blah EPs on to the computer (?) then he could listen to them as MP3s (?) And he did a couple and...quelle surprise...they are really crappy quality, really crackly and hissy (duh, that's why they invented CDs).

And it's all doomy gloomy stuff like Joy Division and Japan and the Cure and Sigue Sigue Sputnik anyway (however did that get in there?) so if you listen for more than half an hour you end up weeping in a corner...

SorenLorensen · 04/03/2008 12:53

Aha - yes! We have boxes of cables too. And bits of old ZX Spectrums and Atari wotnots and...aaarggggh!

rantinghousewife · 04/03/2008 12:55

God, I love my turntable, (mines all separates, bought from a proper 'manly' sound shop, did replace the amp last year). Ds went for a rummage in the record racks and pulled out a load of albums and he thought putting a record on was the most taxing thing ever. Kids phutt!

Mercy · 04/03/2008 12:55

lol at Bigitdad wanting a list!

(I'd be quite interested in seeing the list too tbh )

My db is a big fan of sleeve notes.

rantinghousewife · 04/03/2008 12:56

Nothing wrong with a bit of Joy Division

SorenLorensen · 04/03/2008 12:59

Well, I'd admit to liking the Cure but JD don't really do it for me...though I now have "Dance, dance, dance, dance, dance to the radio..." going round my head for some bizarre reason.

Loop are too recent, I want to go back to the 70's.
Thanks though Rantinghousewife

rantinghousewife · 04/03/2008 19:50

Too recent! What are you, Keef Richards

harleyd · 04/03/2008 19:53

ooh
whats he got

EricL · 05/03/2008 12:53

I'm fine BigGitDad.

Been very busy recently and not on here that much.

This vinyl thing does make you think that some of the kids around at the mo will never know how to put a needle on a record - they will think it is so quaint and curious.

Damn i feel old now.

BigGitHamsterKillingDad · 05/03/2008 13:15

It's a known fact that with LP's and singles people would look at the art work read the sleeve notes and generally pay attention to the vinyl, whereas today with CD's that is less so and with downloads you won't see anything bar what comes up on your mp3 player. Vinyl is much more tangible than cd's.
I heard that vinyl was making a comeback not that it would ever replace cd's or downloads in sales but for the reason I stated above.

FasterPussyCatGrrrl · 05/03/2008 13:28

i've come to realise you can't change a horder.

let him be- they are his. they probably have sentimental value, some WILL have monetary value.

it could be worse, there are worse things he could hang onto.

DH has finally started selling some of his things- sold an LP for £80, which he paid a fiver for.

(and i watched 'Control' the other day, and will be getting myself some Joy Division...on CD mind you)

harleyd · 05/03/2008 13:28

bgd, if he's getting rid of the vinyl i'll fight ya for them

BigGitHamsterKillingDad · 05/03/2008 13:48

That's not fair Harley, cos 1) Your'e a girl (I think!), 2) you know I don't fight, 3) Currently you are disabled which would put me in more trouble on here were you too lose and 4) I know you use implements like bottles when yuo have a scrap. Me I'm a clean Queensbury rules kind of guy...
I think we should behave and let me have them first and I will forward them onto after I have finished with them.....eventually
I somehow think MrsBGD will not let me have them anyway..

harleyd · 05/03/2008 13:53

you just know i would kick your ass

fondant4000 · 05/03/2008 14:01

He needs to prove he was young once and had a life bc (before children).

It could be worse. He could go out and buy a natty yellow sports car and leather trousers to prove he's still young

At least he's got the sense to realise it is the past.

BigGitHamsterKillingDad · 05/03/2008 15:32

Hartley, you'd need to get through my posse before you could get to me...

harleyd · 05/03/2008 15:47

i laugh in the face of your posse

EricL · 06/03/2008 12:21

Yes BGD - digital formats do have certain bonuses over vinyl although vinyl does have its plus points too.

You can scratch and juggle on cd's but it is not quite the same as you have your fingers on a jog-wheel rather than having that physical connection between plastic and skin.

Vinyl is expensive though. I pay £5/6 for a 12" and you only ever play the one side on it to be honest. Compare that to £1.49/99 for an mp3 that is just the track you want and you see how the maths adds up - even if it isn't something physical and tangible.

I also now go out with virtually my whole record collection in one bag (very handy for travelling and things like not putting a case in the aircraft luggage hold and a) praying it gets to you at the other end and b) stressing about what the handlers are doing with it)

Also - the things you can do with an mp3 when you pass it through some professional software is simply mind-blowing. You can do anything you like to it now including making your own edits of tracks so that your collection and mixes are unique to you.

rantinghousewife · 06/03/2008 19:16

Yes, mp3s, Ericl are very convenient (I can't fit my vinyl and amp and turntable in my handbag, big as it is), but there is something about vinyl. The smell, the care it takes to handle it, the sense of ceremony that accompanies putting on a record and having to listen to an entire album because you can't be fooked to get up and lift the needle just to skip the one song.
I'm a cantankerous old fart, aren't I?

EricL · 10/03/2008 10:52

No - i agree. There is something special about vinyl - i just don't think there is any medium that can replace that physicality of a piece of meatl touching a piece of plastic and the tactile nature of the way you have to handle the music.

But digital formats offer up so many other plus points that make it a more practical and innovative way of managing your music.

I'm not ever going to stop buying and using it - it's just that digital is my number one choice now.

EricL · 10/03/2008 10:53

Oops - METAL!

WowOoo · 10/03/2008 10:56

Oh, your poor DH. I justhad the time to listen to some old records and I was in heaven for about an hour!! (we have loads of CD's and vinyl is in attic with CRAP record player)

lurkingdad · 20/03/2008 23:45

I've read this thread and it's finally got me started with ripping my tapes and vinyl to digital format so that I have a chance of actually listening to them again. I got the kit for Christmas and just haven't got round to it yet. Thanks for the motivation. Most of the Sound of the Suburbs ripped and just recording Bananarama's greatest hits must be the wife's surely
