Stuff I don't get

And probably a good place to ask about it.

Celebrity-worship. All those magazines called things like NOW! and HOT! They appear to be about people I have never heard of or have no interest in, yet who are inexplicably worshipped by the (almost 100% female) readership. And all those letters saying things like "ooh, I adore that belt Kate Moss is wearing in such-and-such, where can I get one?"

What is Ashton Kutcher? What does it DO? Ditto Lindsey Lohan and Meg Matthews and Fran Cosgrove.

Jeans tucked into boots. Any chaps here find that a good look? Boots, yes. The glossy and spiky-heeled and knee-length variety on a well-turned leg, oh yuss. But - with JEANS? WTF is all that about??

Sex and the City. Nope.... don't get it.

Shoes - probably a bit of an obvious one. I have three pairs. Smart, casual and very casual. Some blokes would consider even this a bit excessive. If I ever thought of going and buying six more pairs of exactly the same style in different colours, I'd think I'd gone mad.

proud to say I've never tucked jeans into boots - I'm too worried about looking like Dick Wittington.

Mirage · 01/09/2006 20:41

I don't have the faintest interest in celebs & don't care what they are doing.

Have never watched SITC & think Sarah Jessica Parker looks like a horse.

I hate that pets column in The Telegraph, but feel compelled to read it,just to see how many nutjobs out there really think that other people are interested in the doings of their beloved budgie.

The only boots I tuck my jeans into are wellies! So there!

morningpaper · 01/09/2006 20:50

I am a man too

In fact I was only just Googling to see how you train to be a locksmith

It crossed my mind that isn't the sort of thing that ladies are supposed to be interested in

I've no idea who any of the ladies are you mentioned -= Meg Matthews I think was a friend of uuuuuuuuum someone who was married to a popstar?

I think I must have dropped out of Women's School

1Baby1Bump · 01/09/2006 20:58

dh likes satc.
he flicks thru heat.
he has approx. 7 smart pairs of shoes, 5 trainers, 1 pair birks, one pair flip flops.

AvaLou · 01/09/2006 20:59

Women don't care either but it's good braindead bath/bed reading and good fuel for conversation that isn't about kids.

morningpaper · 01/09/2006 21:00

Yes I have noticed that other mothers look blankly when I try to mention something like, say, politics or current affairs

liquidclocks · 01/09/2006 21:03

1baby1bump - you're neglecting your thread - get over there and give us an update!

CountessDracula · 01/09/2006 21:05

I agree with you on everything but the shoes

I love shoes

ediemay · 01/09/2006 21:06

celebs - who???????
jeans in boots - farmers/fishermen
Sex & the City - too bitter
shoes - live in Blunnies

hmmmmmmmm - I'm a bloke then

I don't get hair colour or nail extensions either

AvaLou · 01/09/2006 21:11

morningpaper, I need you as a friend, anything I say to my 'mummy friends' gets steered towards nappies or the benefits of music class etc. argh.

1Baby1Bump · 01/09/2006 21:14

sorry liquid. have posted on september one! x

morningpaper · 01/09/2006 21:29

AvaLou I burst into tears at toddler group the morning after Bush won the presidential election and everyone thought I was totally barking

I could be your friend but I REALLY think you are Ava off CBeebies and I can't get that image out of my head

wrinklytum · 01/09/2006 21:46

Bush is enough to reduce any sane individual to tears. My fav Bushisms "Most of our imports come from abroad" (lol) and "The french dont even have a word for entrepreneur" (rofl).Dont get celeb thing or S.I.T.C but do love shoes!!!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 01/09/2006 21:58

Have never EVER watched Sex and the City.
Not particularly interested in schlebs.
Dont tuck jeans into boots. (not since i was about 8 and dressed up in my mums clothes, anyway)

ruty · 01/09/2006 22:06

I love Ava from Cbeebies.

longwaytogo · 01/09/2006 23:06

I can't get boots to go over my calves let alone tuck jeans into them too - didn't even know that was in (don't live in a city)

Always copies of heat etc in staff room in work and never pick them up think they are boring as don't know who said people are.

as for shoes dh insists i have a fetish for shoes but when we actually counted shoes HE had twice as many as me, I probably would have more but wear them out twice as fast as him.

So I too think I am a bloke

Oh aye and have never watched sex in the city (is it still on?) >

suburbanjellybrain · 02/09/2006 07:34

Now Heat etc. etc. are simply junk food for the brain i read them since starting to have babies a couple of years ago and think i use them as relaxation and escape - my dad used to read spy novels with a picture of a gun and a high heeled shoe on the front, in the loo, for the same reason. I think i am growing out of them again now as i get fed up with the endless 'look at that fat celeb/ ooh isn't anorexia terrible' stories - i think that it might be rotting my brain - i have stopped having the tv on during the day except for cbeebies for the same reason.

Men love to bitch and gossip just as much as women but it is done in different ways - my dh is much more cutting about people he thinks are crap or ugly ... i am interested in the details of peoples lives because i am nosey.

The Grauniad wknd is very irritating i agree but i have been buying it forever and i like the guide - that is worth the admission price alone.

I too find it hard to imagine why women have so many shoes but i don't wear highheels perhaps if i did i would buy more - as it is my dm sandals have seen me through the summer and i will struggle through autumn till i can wear my knee high comfy suede boots...

satc - was worth it only for the honesty about sex the good writing and i put up with horse face for the other female characters which were all more interesting and funny (just like dawsons creek!).

jeans tucked into boots work if your thighs are no wider than your calves - so it is a great look for teenagers girls or men - ditto for drainpipe jeans but that is the problem with fashion designed by gay men for anorexic looking women (no offence meant to gay men but please...) i think now i am over 30 (a bit) i have to accept that its no more topshop but m&s and monsoon for me now... (or tescos)

UnquietDad · 02/09/2006 10:53

When DW and I last had the "fashion" conversation she said I was lucky she was so restrained, as "some women demand a new wardrobe every year". I was a bit puzzled by this, as ours is all fitted furniture and would be a bu99er to replace.

LOL UD

zdl · 02/09/2006 11:07

Back to OP, I'm a woman and I don't get those things either.

But DH has more pairs of shoes than I do, he keeps buying trainers on the off-chance.

motherinferior · 02/09/2006 11:13

I don't get the shoes thing. I frequently wonder if I'm a Proper Girl. Let alone and Improper Girl.

Boots and jeans, though, yes, I get.

I don't get cars. At all.

UnquietDad · 02/09/2006 11:16

I don't get cars either. Maybe I'm a girl.

The Guardian "Guide" depresses me as it's full of stuff we couldn't even do if we did live in London.

And those teenagers in "Family" are appalling.

Wordsmith · 02/09/2006 11:37

Isn't Ashton Kutcher married to Demi Moore? I only know this because I read OK at the gym on the exercise bike during my 5 min cooldown. However they're always about 3 monhts out of date there so he may be married to someone else by now. I am going to the hairdressers on Weds so will probably find out then.

With you on the jeans and SATC. However shoes are the porn end of retail therapy, no-one in their right mind can resist them if they think they can get away with them.

And while you're on - what it is about the 'analysis' bit on Match of the Day/other football progs? I can enjoy the match, but why the hell would anyone want to know what Alan Hansen/Gary Lineker/Martin O'Neill/Andy Townsend thinks?

motherinferior · 02/09/2006 11:46

My partner buys car magazines. Now that is weird. If you ask me.
