Stuff I don't get

And probably a good place to ask about it.

Celebrity-worship. All those magazines called things like NOW! and HOT! They appear to be about people I have never heard of or have no interest in, yet who are inexplicably worshipped by the (almost 100% female) readership. And all those letters saying things like "ooh, I adore that belt Kate Moss is wearing in such-and-such, where can I get one?"

What is Ashton Kutcher? What does it DO? Ditto Lindsey Lohan and Meg Matthews and Fran Cosgrove.

Jeans tucked into boots. Any chaps here find that a good look? Boots, yes. The glossy and spiky-heeled and knee-length variety on a well-turned leg, oh yuss. But - with JEANS? WTF is all that about??

Sex and the City. Nope.... don't get it.

Shoes - probably a bit of an obvious one. I have three pairs. Smart, casual and very casual. Some blokes would consider even this a bit excessive. If I ever thought of going and buying six more pairs of exactly the same style in different colours, I'd think I'd gone mad.

moondog · 31/08/2006 22:24

Which is why I take The Telegraph.

Auntymandy · 31/08/2006 22:25

I know ashton kutcher because DS made me look at his hair!!
Legs to well de=ifined for skinny jeans and boots.
Hate shoes.
So guess i am a man too!!!!!
with big boobs!!

moondog · 31/08/2006 22:26

'well defined' legs??
Does that mean chunky???

Joolstoo · 31/08/2006 22:27

you right wing fascist you!

UnquietDad · 31/08/2006 22:27

But then the Telegraph has that daft woman answering questions about people's poodles called Binky who have dry rot. I always imagine her to speak EXACTLY like Sarah Kennedy.

Good general knowledge crosswords, though.

UD I'm with you all the way on the celebrity crap thing as well as the new wave of teenage idiots parading as serious artistes!!! Jeans tucked into boots - not a good look. And I'm female!!!

lemonaid · 31/08/2006 22:33

I also agree with UD [lemonaid briefly wonders if she is, in fact, a man. Checks c-section scar. Nope, definitely a woman]. Maybe we are just becoming middle-aged?

moondog · 31/08/2006 22:35

Oh that ex model loon animal activist nutter(they're always bloody ex models aren't they??) who writes in the Saturday one?

Yes,that is shit.

LittleSarah · 31/08/2006 22:37

Have you ever read Tatler(I think that is the name) Unquietdad? I think you would love it. Lol

I got it recently for the free sunglasses, my favourite 'celebrity' was Princess something or other, partying at Annabels after her 21st birthday...

Blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

Thomcat · 31/08/2006 22:42

First I have to say I think I quite like you unquietdad!

Now then celeb-worship - don't get it either. don't buy magazines but get them at work and can't resist a very quick flick throuh Heat, just so I know what the hell everyone is talking about. Can't have concentrated too hard though as no idea who Ashton Tucker or Lindsey Lohan, in fact I thought Lindsey was a middle name and Ditto the first name for a second!! Meg is that ex bird of a Gallagher and Fran, I think he owned nightclubs.

Jeans in boots, sorry, loving that look. Done right, tight sexy jeans that make your bum look fab and a pair of expensive boots with a bit of a hell, ohhh yes, lovely. Casual, but smart and sexy, has it all for me I'm afraid.

Sex n the City - my dad who is 64 loved that show, my DP enjoyed it and I didn't mind it either. Bit of easy TV.

Shoes - love what mosschops said about them always being the same size when you are having a fat day! I like shoes but not as much as many women do. I don't really do heels and glam shoes. I'm more your funky but comfy show wearer. Although have to say when I've splashed out £120 on a pair of trainers I quite like looking at them, a lot, for the first week. My DP gets just as excited about new shoes or new clothing purchases in general, as I do.

Good thread

LittleSarah · 31/08/2006 22:49

I remember watching Sex and the City with my dad years ago and getting up to go to bed after when the football highlights were coming on.

He got rather agitated and was like, honestly I make an effort to watch girly things and then you disappear off when the football comes on. He always says he only got into cinema/movies to please women!

Anyway, I do watch the footie now, and I hate that celeb stuff!

LittleSarah · 31/08/2006 22:59

Oh and just in case you are interest, a programme called 'Kensington Wives' is just about to start on ITV1!

Panman · 31/08/2006 23:06

Another vote for jeans in boots. Colleague at work today. High black boots, faded jeans. Black shirt. He looked hot.

Panman · 31/08/2006 23:21

No SHE. SHE looked hot.

moondog · 31/08/2006 23:23

Don't Panic PM.We believe you.
Plenty wouldn't.

nooka · 31/08/2006 23:28

I love this thread! I'm so glad I'm not the only woman who thinks she must be a man! Can't make a comment on jeans tucked into boots, because I don't read any magazines or weekend newspapers. I have wondered if I am a complete freak on this front!

Panman · 31/08/2006 23:36

btw about to whore said friend..beautiful sassy passionate Brazilian woman, 39, 1 ds 2, looking for handsome, solvent good man. (know this should be on a different thread, or a different site......but we ARE in the nen's room!!) Know anybody up to the job, around Gtr/Manc?

moondog · 31/08/2006 23:46

Panman, you are not my ex bf desperately in love with this woman are you????

Panman · 31/08/2006 23:49

Calm yourself MD, no......

she is a friend for whom it is a travesty she is on her own......so...let me know?

moondog · 31/08/2006 23:50

Phew.....

fistfullofnappies · 01/09/2006 00:02

lol unquietdad, I identify with everything you wrote in your first post.

UnquietDad · 01/09/2006 10:47

But the jeans and boots are everywhere! Not just in magazines. At least, if you live in a city they are. Still think it's a BAD look, but then I haven't seen Panboy's sassy Brazilian milf.

DaddyCool · 01/09/2006 13:32

i'm afraid i do get sex and the city and i occasional thumb through DW's 'Grazia'

Stargazer · 01/09/2006 14:14

Oh Daddy cool - what an admission
Actually, think I must be a bloke too.
Don't do celebs! Well sort of keep up with the gossip via The Star (comic for DH).
As for jeans in boots - not for me.
But shoes are wonderful I think I've inherited my mother's shoes' shopping gene, but I've only got about 10 pairs!! Which isn't as many as DH

ruty · 01/09/2006 17:11

i too only have three pairs of shoes [one pair of trainers, one pair of leather boots, one pair of strappy high heels, oh yeah and a pair of flip flops.] Don't get the shoe things at all. I occasionally snaffle an OK magazine into my supermarket bag, usually to read only as a way of shutting my brain off from any intellectual activity whatsoever [only get to read it on the loo anyway, where of course I should be reading Proust] Watched Sex in the City occasionally for the same reason [though not on the loo obviously] can't imagine watching it post children. The idea of buying loads of shoes as being a 'girl thing' always grates on me - I too find it dull and incomprehensible. Go on MN style icons, shoot me down!
