Was having a conversation with DP about film actors, and why Sean Bean always played a bad guy.

I said it was because (I think) he is not very attractive. DP said that he wouldnt know about that. I disagreed.

Now, he says he doesn't look at men and think about whether they are attractive looking/ugly etc.

I dont buy this (and actually said "dont worry, it doesnt make you gay or anything" which is probably not very tactful but i figured it had a bearing)

Surely hetero/gay men dont just look at women/men and decide if they have a nice face/physique or not?

Do they....?

Just asked dp whether he can tell if a man is good-looking or not. He said "Well, if he's got a nice, tight bottom..."

1Baby1Bump · 26/07/2006 20:33

1Baby1Bump · 26/07/2006 20:35

dh says he can spot a good looking man.
he usually calls them plonkers when we are out in the car.
'look at that plonker in that bmw!'

bless him! x
So, in essence, what you are saying is, that all men are in fact just like cavemen
No, Vicki, I'm saying that all humans are just like cavemen. We're essentially (psychologically) unevolved from the time when flint-knapping was the height of silicon technology. Parts of our psychological makeup are even older.
dh40k is too clever for me! he sounds like a scientist!!
Glad I sound convincing. I had an interesting chat with dw after posting as to how women determine the "alpha female" or matriarch in a social setting. We wondered if it was combination of age and physical attractiveness, so the woman who keeps her looks longer is perceived as the dominant female, able to claim mating rights ahead of younger, subordinate females. When a matriarch is beyond mating age, she then wields the power to dictate which of the subordinate females mates first.

I'm not saying it's true (I'm not a scientist or an anthropologist), but it would cast an interesting light on the "mother of the bride" syndrome, not to mention the social dynamic of a ladies' coffee morning...

A slight digression- Apparently hungry men are more likely to find bigger women attractive and the same men when full find skinner women attractive. I must stop watching Richard & Judy!!!! I suppose that's one thing you can say for work.

So who thinks Richard is attractive???

anteater · 01/08/2006 19:56

I do find some men 'attractive'in an all over sort of way..! Mentioned to dw while I was filling her 5wd beast tonight that I thought the Saab filling geezer looked interesting (code for hot) She had not even noticed him.
It works in reverse as well, some men are so all over ugly that it makes me shudder..

WellaWellaWellaHuh · 01/08/2006 22:53

As a bloke, I thought I knew which men would be attractive to women... then I read this thread.
Mind you, my DW has a thing for Eric Stoltz!!

Joolstoo · 01/08/2006 23:05

tbh I don't get what a lot of women see in the usual suspects - Brad, David et al???????????

call em old fashioned but I like and itneresting face not a pretty one.

high maintenance men? no thanks

muma3 · 01/08/2006 23:19

my dp will comment on other men , he finds some men attractive that i dont , he is 100% straight but doesnt feel ashamed to have an opinion , i suppose its like us women who say i think she is well pretty or omg id love to have her legs etc etc etc

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 01/08/2006 23:24

I don't think it is evolutionary 40k type person. I think it's cultural. walking past WHSmith today it struck me that men's magazines have pictures of attractive women on the front. and women's magazines...have pictures of attractive women on the front. I think society encourages us (all of us, male and female, straight or gay or whatever) to assess women's physical attractiveness - but not men's.

Finbar · 18/08/2006 19:47

I think the acid test is to get your man to play 'Gay Island'...ask them which male ( usaully a film star)who they would take to a desert island - they HAVe to make a choice.

Very revealing.
WHen I've played this with make friends it usually ends up being Johnny Depp or Bryan Ferry!

2ndtime · 06/09/2006 20:01

I think the odd acne scar can make a man ravishingly rough and handsome, (think Michael Huchence)fwoar! Why is that so not the same for women? Poor Cameron Diaz has her zits plastered all over the papers, but I love a bit of acne on my man! Am I weird?

On the Sean Bean thing I think he's beautiful. My DH just got a job at Sheffield Utd. and one of the perks is being able to take a guest to the game and having access to the Hospitality Lounge after where you get to mingle with the players WAGS and directors etc. Old Mr. Bean is a director so a regular visitor. I never realised just how much I loved footie til just recently. Haven't made it to a game yet but am planning to go ASAP. Cant wait.
Kids thought it was the other Mr. Bean.PMSL. Not quite as attractive as Seany!

Redlorry75 · 15/09/2006 16:06

By writing here I hope to breathe life in to this debate again. As a hormonal 28wks PG lady I can find beauty in most men, although I must say horse riding long haired and a little muddy/bloody really gets the blood pumping. Any epic battle seens in historic films and I get a touch of the vapours

I can look at a woman who is seen as attractive to men and see why - but it does nothing for me,

But as for Sean Bean in LOTR is ...phew loverrrrly.
