Has anyone been to see "Another Place", the Anthony Gormley sculptures on Crosby Beach?

We went today and I found them quite beautiful. The light was amazing and the tide was half-way out, so it was perfect.

We've seen them - my mum and dad live nearby and we often go there anyway.

I really like them .

ediemay · 21/10/2006 23:05

hi Idris - I'm glad you like them too. I loved watching them emerge from the sea as the tide was going out - fantastic. There was a good playground for DS too!

I'm v v cross about the sodding council wanting to move them - there is a great comments page on the Guardian about it, will find it in a sec.

They look superb - have never been but really want to go soon, esp if they are being removed.

PretendFriend · 21/10/2006 23:14

Guardian bit, also called Culture Vulture!

Arts News report (with fab photo with ferries in the distance) (I love the pic at the top of this piece too )

Somebody in the culture vulture bit suggested moving them to the NE, near the Angel, if they have to go. Better than New York I spose but I think they should stay put too. Surfing??? At Crosby???

ediemay · 21/10/2006 23:22

Thanks for those, PF, didn't have time to get a paper today.
I think that it was always planeed that they would go to NY, they have been at 3 sites before Crosby - but they do seem at home there!

GraceUnderFire · 21/10/2006 23:34

I didn't buy the "they have to go, because they get in the way of surfing" comment either, PF

CorpseBrideOfJohnCusack · 22/10/2006 23:31

I saw these in Stavanger, Norway in 1999 (I think it was...) - they were fabulous. I took a (if I may say so myself) excellent photo of them which hangs in pride of place on my living room wall
yes they have been in several places - a shame they can't stay in the UK but I don't think that was ever really planned. lol at surfing in Crosby!

Blu · 22/10/2006 23:56

My mum and dad went the length of the country to see them, and loved them. I wish I had been - are they going at the end of November?

alexsCURSEDMUMMY · 23/10/2006 00:01

i've seen them- my parents live nearby too. they are good but were only ever meant to be temporary. if they were to stay the council would have to stump up mega bucks.

moondog · 26/10/2006 22:25

I want to check this out.
Can't find tide times though.
Is it good whether sea in or out??

ediemay · 26/10/2006 22:37

Hi moondog, we went on Saturday and high tide was at about 1030, low tide 1730 ish. We arrived at about 1pm and spent an hour watching the tide reveal more and more. I will try to find the tide tables for you

moondog · 26/10/2006 22:40

Thank you Edie,I noted your post about tide being half out and was thinking about it.
I'm in North Wales and have been hankering to go for a while.
Thank you,it would be so kind.

Is it the same as Liverpool?
I could just google Liverpool tides maybe???

lulumama · 26/10/2006 22:42

DH took DS as we live near that neck of the woods...they are taking the sculptures away very soon though..it was part of DHs birthday present to himself..

they were phenomenal.....

ediemay · 26/10/2006 22:44

here you go!

"Planning permission expires on November 28 but high tides mean the figures will have to be removed by October 31, with work probably beginning next week"

From that Guardian piece, dated 20 Oct

I will try to see them at the weekend then - or what's left of them .

ediemay · 26/10/2006 22:47

I think there might be a temporary reprieve - Sefton are considering the situation again. I will try to find a link

OP posts:
moondog · 26/10/2006 22:49

Thank you Edie.
I think they've changed their mind though and they will stay.

PretendFiend · 26/10/2006 22:49

Mersey waterfront feature with link to tide tables for Another Place (I think)

ediemay · 26/10/2006 22:50

Croeso, moondog. I hope you get to see them, I want to go back.

\link{http://www.seftoncoast.org.uk/index_news.html\I found this, last updated on the 24th

Is it easy to get to.
Do I just aim for Crosby??
(Always get lost around Liverpool/Wirral)

PretendFiend · 26/10/2006 22:52

bbc website from Tuesday - thanks, ediemay, I hadn't heard about the reprieve!

CorpseBrideOfJohnCusack · 26/10/2006 22:53

do go (sorry can't help on the geography of Crosby)
it's one of the best things I've ever seen, saw them 7 years ago and we STILL talk about it

Chandra · 26/10/2006 22:54

I was planning to go on Sunday... do you think they will be still there?

ediemay · 26/10/2006 22:56

moondog, I got us so lost, but that's just me! Still, it's nice to drive past Everton on a match day...!

Just follow the road past Bootle towards Crosby (A565 I think, signed for Southport) and when you get to Crosby you will see brown & cream tourist signs directing you to the car parks. It's really easy if you just pay attention (unlike me)!

OP posts:
ediemay · 26/10/2006 22:57

It's good news isn't it PF? Chandra, yes, I am sure that they will still be there. If any of you are taking your children there's a good playground at the south end of the beach.
