We went today and I found them quite beautiful. The light was amazing and the tide was half-way out, so it was perfect.

Was chatting to my younger daughter in Melbourne earlier and mentioned that we had been to Crosby today. Yes, the statues are still there but it was high tide and they could not be seen, so if you are thinking of going do check the tide tables. We wanted to get some photographs before they were removed, they really are wondrous. Apparently a lot of the residents are not happy about the removal and have started a petition and also been in touch with their local M.P. to save them.

Edie, just wanted to say thanks again.
We went today and your directions were impeccable and link to tides so useful.
Dh and i got there with no rows(!) thanks to my calm response to his enquiries.
'An MNer told me to take this road...'

It was a perfect day today, sun shining, cloudless sky and no wind,so we spent two hours on the beach. My kids thought they were amazing as did we.

Well worth the four hour 'round trip.

superblastofflips · 02/11/2006 19:35

cant wait to get rid of them!!!! as i just live down the road from them - Crosby Beach...its been a nightmare as everyone is complaining about them inc me (and there is a petition to get rid of them and get it shipped off to NY) as for a start, just to keep the shipshape (clean) is costing Sefton council £2 million a YEAR!!!!!!!!!! when the money could've of been useful toward education and pre-school nurseries as loads had closed down here and there is hardly any playgroups as all shut down and we could use the money for summat for the teenagers..

The iron men WON to stay on the beach till March as it will be easier to shift them due them being in the sand (as its too damp the sand to move them now)

Loads of fishermens cant fish for the hobby as the iron are staring the fishies away,,,and its a eyesore as they are all vandalised too so what is the £2 million is being spent on?????

RANT OVER ....sorry!

superblastofflips · 02/11/2006 19:36

sorry oldbiddy - its the other way round as people are tryin to get rid of them cos its costing a fortune to keep them but they are just rusting away!!

bundle · 02/11/2006 19:37

we went last week when I was visiting my parents, although we could only see a few of the figures (high tide), it was mesmerising.

Tinker · 02/11/2006 19:38

Oh, keep meaning to go as well - also near my mum's. Must make effort now in case they are removed

bundle · 02/11/2006 19:39

honestly I think they're worth evey penny

PretendFriend · 02/11/2006 19:43

Some fool had to be rescued today - that won't do the "keep them" campaign any good.

(Conspiracy alert? )

hotandbothered · 02/11/2006 19:45

They are great. Dd of course was completely fascinated in the dangly bits tho' and kept running up and touching them. "This one's got a willy too..." Very funny.

moondog · 02/11/2006 21:08

Oh blastoff,you old misery!
My dd loved them-left her socks at the foot of one.
Libations to the Gods I thought....

superblastofflips · 02/11/2006 21:17

i know!

gunpowderjaamyandplot · 02/11/2006 21:58

SBOL - I meant to ask you whether it was you who got stuck in the sand...obviously not.
I only live about 10 miles away and keep meaning to go!
