Songs that make you cry (because they are good!)

I was listening to the radio whilst I was preparing to dress DTs this morning and "Dance with my Father" by Luther Vandross came on. I've heard this song many times but I still had to stop what I was doing, sit down and focus on it. By the end, I had tears streaming down my face. I'm not an overly emotional person and DH says that sometimes I can be quite harsh and uncompassionate. However, this song really touches something inside me and I end up crying and reflecting about my own father who passed away 20 years ago.

Am I soppy? Does this happen to anyone else and if so, which song.

I really hope that if this song is played when I'm around a lot of people in public, I can control my emotions because I do not want to embarrass myself by blubbing over it!

If it was sung by another vocalist, I don't think it would have the same effect because Luther's gentle and understated delivery is, imho, what makes the song so potent.

I don't listen to much pop music, but a few years ago I heard a wonderful song - something about wings or flying, and it was by Boyzone Feel totally conned by music tsars making me cry with such a manipulative song!

To retain my culture vulture credentials, my favourite song is by Schubert - An Die Musik.

Well, on the classical front, a piece of music that moves me everytime is Rodriguez's guitar concerto.

DH and I also love the theme tune to Gladiator - it mesmorises us everytime we hear it.

A really crass one, called 'I hope you dance' by some country and western type singer.

Always think that if I died, would ask DP to play it to my DDs when they reached 16.

I'm a real fun person at parties...

PeachyPlumFairy · 02/12/2005 14:47

The song 'you're the voice' always has an effect onme. I'm not claiming it's a masterpiece of song, but the message is very much what I am about.

chIRIStmasfairybigpants · 02/12/2005 14:51

Feistybird - I think that one's fab too! (as well as the "sunscreen" one from a few years back.)
Vincent by Don McCLean always brings a tear to my eye - and Don't Stop Me Now by Queen (but I think the latter is just 'cos I'm pg & come over all unnecessary at the drop of a hat!!)

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 02/12/2005 14:51

Have I mentioned this song at all?

chIRIStmasfairybigpants · 02/12/2005 14:52

Yay! - JCB Song! - it's got to be No.1! love it loveit loveit

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 02/12/2005 14:53

I did that, and they won't give me any money for it!

All I get is to shag Luke every now and then (but more than MrsMills person!)

gscrym · 02/12/2005 14:54

The Flame by Cheap Trick. It cam on while in the car and I was bubblin the time I got to the petrol station.

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 02/12/2005 14:55

This song truly makes me cry too.

FlameRobin · 02/12/2005 14:57

I was hoping it would be JCB!!!

Bloody Ronan Keating took his hand at slaughtering the Hope You Dance one ... why do they let him do that??? why??? Like why did Cat Stevens agree to letting him slaughter Father and Son in unison???? How was he allowed to kill Let Her Down Easy too??? Sorry... a tad anti-Ronan here

For me, its Richie Sambora - The Answer. Oooh, and Puff the Magic Dragon ...

FlameRobin · 02/12/2005 14:58

Puff was due to the outcome, rather than so good-ness....

Tinker · 02/12/2005 14:59

Same theme but "Everything I Own" by Bread. Really thought it was just a schmaltzy love song but then when read that David Gates wrote it after his father died it took on a whole new dimension.

This is fantastic. It's about relationship break-up, obviously.

Twenty-Five Forty-One
(Grant Hart)

Jenny gave us a number
Jenny gave us a place to stay
Billy got hold of a van
and then we moved the very next day
To twenty-five forty-one, big windows to let in the sun
Twenty-five forty-one, big windows to let in the sun
We put down the money
Then we picked up the keys
We had to keep the stove on all night long so the mice wouldn't freeze
I put our names on the mailbox
and I put everything else in the past
It was the first place we'd ever had to ourselves
I didn't know it would be the last
Twenty-five forty-one, big windows to let in the sun
Twenty-five forty-one, big windows to let in the sun
Now everything is over
Everything is done
Everything's in boxes now
at twenty-five forty-one
Things are so much different now
You could say the situation's reversed
And it will not be the last time I'll have to be out by the first
Twenty-five forty-one, big windows to let in the sun
Twenty-five forty-one, big windows to let in the sun
Twenty-five forty-one...

FlameRobin · 02/12/2005 15:01

Oooh, and Ben Folds Five - Brick... apparantly about an abortion

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 02/12/2005 15:01

Bet he was shagging someone else!

speedymama · 02/12/2005 15:02

Confession time!
Another one that brings a lump to my front is....

"When we were 2 little boys" by Rolf Harris.

The line "Do you think I would leave you dying when there is room on my horse for 2" touches me everytime.
