Songs that make you cry (because they are good!)

I was listening to the radio whilst I was preparing to dress DTs this morning and "Dance with my Father" by Luther Vandross came on. I've heard this song many times but I still had to stop what I was doing, sit down and focus on it. By the end, I had tears streaming down my face. I'm not an overly emotional person and DH says that sometimes I can be quite harsh and uncompassionate. However, this song really touches something inside me and I end up crying and reflecting about my own father who passed away 20 years ago.

Am I soppy? Does this happen to anyone else and if so, which song.

I really hope that if this song is played when I'm around a lot of people in public, I can control my emotions because I do not want to embarrass myself by blubbing over it!

If it was sung by another vocalist, I don't think it would have the same effect because Luther's gentle and understated delivery is, imho, what makes the song so potent.

If it's sad music you're after, William Orbit's version of Ravel's Pavane Pour Une Infante Defunte is heartbreaking.

Trouble by Coldplay and So Why So Sad by Manics. Runaway Train by Soul Asylum.

Oh gawd, 'I will always love you' Dolly Parton. And a load of Roy Orbison songs. I don't know why but it's the old ones that really get to me. There's a Nina Simone song called something like 'For all we know' and dp and I are inconsolable whenever it's on. We played it the morning I went into labour and were a pair of total wrecks.

Fields of Gold - but ONLY sung by Eva Cassidy. I just could not bear to watch those Cancer Research ads.

You'll Never Walk Alone - sung right at the end of "Carousel", NOT on the terraces.

'He ain't heavy,he's my brother' The Hollies

Listen to the lyrics next time you hear it......so moving. Really rams home the message of looking after the ones you love every time.

oh - another one - "Lonely Boy" by Andrew Gold, maybe because I have an only ds, but I always get emotional when I hear it.

Know what you mean about the Cancer Research ads especially the girl in the wedding dress saying her mum should be there...

Just heard the new Eminem single When I'm Gone for the first time last week whilst driving and tears welled up so much I had to stop the car til the end of the song...

Never really taken much notice of Eminem before, but the video is incredibly powerful too, his little girl just screws me up I sob every time I see her say Mummy's wrists are bleeding - seen it 3 or 4 times now...
