My favourite city would be Istanbul. It's got amazing culture, is cheap and, the people are amazingly friendly.

Me and my ex managed to get an apartment for the week...and it was only £300. Bargain!

OP posts:

Bruges and Venice

pagwatch · 06/10/2010 14:07

I loved Rome but my fav is Vienna

Pinner35 · 06/10/2010 14:09

I love Cape Town (we got married there), Dublin and Seville.

MollieO · 06/10/2010 14:12

Florence
Buenos Aires
New York
Cape Town
Chicago
San Diego

Hated San Francisco.

BlingLoving · 06/10/2010 14:15

Cape Town
Rome

Loved New York but not in the same way. It's more fun and vibey but Rome just made me want to sit in a cafe and watch the world go by.

Poffertje · 13/10/2010 16:22

The Hague - mainly for the Mauritshuis
Bruges
Vancouver

Echinacea · 11/11/2010 13:45

Bit of a wildcard: Udaipur.
I've travelled to an awful lot of impressive cities (in Europe, Australia, the US, UK, India, Pakistan, southern and northern Africa) but just love Udaipur for the colour, shopping, food, friendliness, beauty. Really lovely place.
In second place would be Melbourne. Like a smaller, friendlier London with better food (worse climate though. Melbourne weather sucks.)

Faaamily · 11/11/2010 13:55

Other than my beloved London Grin, there are a few that stand out.

New York (sings: these streets will make you feel brand neeewwwwww!). Been there a dozen times and just never get sick of it. Home from home. Love it.

Rome. Noisy, traffic-ridden, people are rude, but STUNNING. Felt like the ultimate wide-eyed tourist having coffee every morning in the shadow the Pantheon and stomping around the Colloseum.

Also love Paris and Florence with a passion (although would avoid Florence in high season), and really enjoyed Jo'Burg more recently, which lots of people (especially South Africans) said was scary, but turned out to be a fascinating, sprawling great place.

To be honest, I love cities. I haven't been to a European city I didn't like (yet). Even the cities I have found strange or stressful (Mumbai, Kingston, Bangkok) I enjoyed getting to know.

Desperate to go to Istanbul, Tokyo, Havana, Chicago and Rio in no particular order.

Faaamily · 11/11/2010 13:56

Over-rated imo: Sydney, Barcelona

Hulababy · 11/11/2010 13:58

I really like New York - such a friendly city too IME.

TrillianAstra · 11/11/2010 13:59

Barcelona. Might help that we went for an amazing wedding, but the city is lovely, and there is plenty of green space (and a beach!)

IntergalacticHussy · 30/11/2010 15:28

let's hear it for New York!

i'm actually really falling in love with Norwich these days though...

VivaLeBeaver · 30/11/2010 15:31

Barcelona

BelligerentGhoul · 30/11/2010 15:33

Oia in Santorini is the most beautiful town I've ever been to (am I allowed a town?).

here

And Prague in the snow was gorgeous too.

5GoldenFimbos · 30/11/2010 15:40

I live in Norwich and whilst it is safe and has relatively low crime rates etc etc, I am bored half the time, there is nothing to do and nowhere to go. As someone else put it - Norwich a place at the end of the road to nowhere.

Never been to New York but think I would love it.

My favourites are:-
Glasgow
London
Edinburgh
Durham

orangina · 30/11/2010 15:59

New York
Barcelona
Beirut
Cape Town

Love them all

Unprune · 30/11/2010 16:02

San Francisco. It's just amazing.
Valencia is really fun.
I love Paris.
I also really liked the feel of Auckland, but didn't get the chance to explore it enough.

I'd live in (or near) SF in a second, if it didn't cost the price of a useful child.

propercrimbo · 30/11/2010 16:05

Edinburgh at christmas, amazing!
Or... Lucca in Tuscany in summer

brimfull · 30/11/2010 16:09

Barcelona wildly overrated imo
same with Seattle was disappointed with both.

brimfull · 30/11/2010 16:10

Paris and London do it for me

Unprune · 30/11/2010 17:28

I thought Seattle was just...boring. Looks great, but a bit meh.

Willing to admit that I may not have got the measure of it in the day and a half I was there, though Grin

Slubberdegullion · 30/11/2010 17:31

Adelaide
Christchurch NZ
Cologne
and much to my suprise I am slowly becoming rather partial to Liverpool

Unprune · 30/11/2010 17:33

Yes that would surprise me too Grin

I really think I could live a good life and have a lot of fun in Glasgow, too.

thecatatemygymsuit · 30/11/2010 17:36

Paris, then Barcelona and Rome.
Loved NY but have only been once.
For me Venice was the most disappointing city - I couldn't get beyond the dampness!

Slubberdegullion · 30/11/2010 17:55

ahh have just spotted this in culture vultures.

Florence then for the culture side of things,

Christchurch is not so hot on the art front.
