My favourite city would be Istanbul. It's got amazing culture, is cheap and, the people are amazingly friendly.

Me and my ex managed to get an apartment for the week...and it was only £300. Bargain!

New York City has been my best so far.

Going to Prague in a few weeks, which my brother rates as his favourite (it's where he met his beautiful girlfriend, he might be biased!).

I loved Stockholm too. But yes agree with muggle, Durham is far nicer. In order:

Durham
Rome
Stockholm

York.

Why has no one else mentioned York? It's a gorgeous city. I'd happily go back there.

I love cities with a passion. My absolute favourites (of the ones I have been to) are London and New York. NYC is my idea of heaven .

The only city I have ever been disappointed with was Barcelona. I didn't like the vibe. It wasn't rational, really, as on paper it is my type of town, but I just didn't feel happy there. It felt very claustrophobic, with a quite nasty friction betwen locals and marauding tourists tourists. I witnessed two violent muggings within minutes of arriving, too, which probably started me off on the wrong foot there.

There are so many cities I would love to visit. I'd choose a 'city break' over any type of holiday.

Seville, London, Copenhagen.

worldgonecrazy · 07/06/2011 09:01

Paris, Edinburgh, Rome.

I can only take London in very small doses - I have two days down there next week and am not looking forward to how stressed I will be at the end. How do people do the tube every day and stay sane?

GetOrf · 07/06/2011 09:08

London. I love it so much.

I have never been to New York but imagine I would love it.

I was a bit meh at the other cities in america I have been to (LA, Atlanta, Miami, Tampa, Boston).

European cities are lovely - I have a yen for Zurich (I spent millennium eve there, snogged a load of good looking swiss blokes) and Vilnius. Paris I am impressed by but cannot love. Same with Seville, Madrid and Athens.

slug · 07/06/2011 09:39

Budapest. One of the few cities I keep going back to.

Rome

I quite liked Seattle but I think much of that was nostalgia for my home town (Wellington)

Moscow and St Petersburg are worth a visit

Beijing, if only for the nightly kite flying in Tiannamon Square.

ibbydibby · 07/06/2011 09:40

Vancouver- relieved to see that it has been mentioned by at least 1 other!

Copenhagen

London, in the sense that I used to live there, and moved to the countryside 4 years ago, miss London like mad, but don't miss the crowds, traffic and litter!

Thebonkers · 07/06/2011 09:42

Chicago

jenniferturkington · 07/06/2011 09:44

Barcelona

Paris. It was something of an obsession of mine not so long ago- I have maps and books about it all over my room. We went there almost every year when I was younger, the French half of my family comes from there, so I got the "insider's tour". Beautiful, inspiring, original, always something new to discover. I went last year at Easter and it was an absolute bright spot. I would love to go again soon. I'll be making a connection there when I go to Germany this summer, so I might prolong the journey by securing a free day in between journeys...just to sniff around a bit! Technically I was there a month and a bit ago, but had hardly any time to do anything. Just being there was exciting though :)

quirrelquarrel · 09/06/2011 11:40

York is very pretty but quite small, and the suburbs are another story altogether- although Fulford is lovely, with the river (and rabbits!). My favourite bit is the bookshops- at least five thriving ones not including Waterstones.

I also like Groningen and Amsterdam. Visited the first about a zillion times, it seems like, and Amsterdam a few times. Lovely atmosphere.

Barcelona is undoubtedly a city that you love as soon as you arrive. Besides to eat is great, if I have to recommend you some place, near La Boqueria is this restaurant: www.restaurantelaboqueria.com/

When I was with my partner, we really enjoyed it. In addition tourism is quite spectacular, for the Sagrada Familia I recommend you take the tickets before, take them on their website: sagradafamilia.tickets-barcelona.org/

And the Guell Park is also spectacular!

Bluesheep8 · 20/04/2020 14:50

Vienna

I like Lyon very much. It has lovely architecture, parks, the rivers running through it, the galleries, the Opera, great food culture. And its location, you can be on the Mediterranean or in the mountains easily.
