NaNoWriMo - what's it all about?

I know roughly the idea behind it, but I wondered if anyone had actually taken part and had any thoughts to share?

My novel is already in excess of the 50k but, is still all over the place and needs much editing.

Any thoughts appreciated, even if you considered it and decided no.

Thank you Countess Grin Hope your cold's better today.

I did nothing at all yesterday. Not a word. Must try harder today.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 18/11/2016 10:54

Much better thanks - had an early night and it helped.
Better luck today!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 23/11/2016 11:19

Anyone else still in the game? I'm on 38k so barring accidents should get it done. I don't think the story will be finished though, so I'll probably have a good 10 or 20k more to do before I can count this draft as finished.

Dunlurking · 23/11/2016 11:45

Well done Countess.

No I've had so much going on that it has slipped but I am happy to have started using scrivener with the NaNo trial and I have some good scenes/chapters I am pleased with, so my novel has progressed.

elfycat · 23/11/2016 23:20

Just finished my OU assignment, so now I can get back to important things. On 25k words so will have to get a wiggle on to finish. Fairly confident that I can. I've pulled some ridiculous word count days before.

There's plenty of plot left to explore.

kungfupannda · 24/11/2016 12:17

I'm on 43,800. I've been ill for the last few days, so only just getting back up and running. I think I'm going to make it!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 24/11/2016 13:02
  1. It should be fine but I am a bit miffed that some stuff has come up with the kids that will lose me the entire day tomorrow. Just as well I'm ahead. DS2 was sick at school on Tuesday and DS1 freaked out at a sports event yesterday so it has been constant interruptions all week.

Glad you're feeling better, Kungfu.

  1. DH very kindly took the boys out and did the laundry. How are you doing, Elfycat?
elfycat · 26/11/2016 22:45

36k now. I've taken my DDs to local soft play 3 days in a row (only for a couple of hours today) and today I typed pretty much the whole time.

NaNo meeting tomorrow (I'm the ML) but I have to take DDs (DH works away and my childcare didn't work out). They have been bribed with seeing Trolls afterwards. I have stickers. They will write to father Xmas. There is colouring. They have their writing books (and they take writing seriously Wink for 6 and 7.5yo). There are more stickers. There is cake and drinks at the venue and they can buy their own (as long as they don't fight in the queue). All they have to do is sit on the next table, behave and ignore me.

I'm hoping no one else can make it Grin

elfycat · 26/11/2016 22:46

How close are you now Countess... so near the winner line.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 28/11/2016 14:04

Finished.
Still haven't finished the book, though, so I will keep on and try to keep the momentum up.

Good luck to everyone who's still going.

PoochSmooch · 29/11/2016 21:38

(namechange, i was freshwater)

well done countess!

pleased to announce that i spent most of today writing and finally crossed the finish line at 9.30 this evening Grin

v proud of self. but the book is. not remotely finished. as i was haring towards the finish line today, one of my more lifeless characters suddenly erupted into technicolor glory off the page and brought a dullish subplot to life, so now i have to deal with that!

PoochSmooch · 29/11/2016 21:40

how was your meeting elfycat? never been to one, i live in the back of beyond sadly. sounds good though- cake and all Smile

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 30/11/2016 10:07

Congratulations, Poochsmooch!
Good to hear about your minor character coming to life. I love it so much when that happens. It's such a great feeling better than sex.

Good luck to everyone else trying to finish.

I looked at the calendar and realised I only have 2 and a half weeks till the kids break up for Christmas, so having thought I could ease off a bit, I am now in a panic about getting the draft done by Christmas. It would be such a shame not to, so it's full steam ahead again.

southeastdweller · 14/09/2017 08:02

Is anyone interested in doing it this year? I may do but have a lot on from now until Christmas, so dunno...

Cherrypi · 15/09/2017 21:02

I am. Have done a few times over the years. Have a vague idea so might save it for November.

MyBrilliantDisguise · 15/09/2017 21:03

When does it start? Is it November? I'd be interested in doing it.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 15/09/2017 21:09

I'm considering it but I'm also working full time and doing the Creative Writing MA so it might be one commitment too many Grin

It starts on November 1st MyBrilliantDisguise :)

MyBrilliantDisguise · 15/09/2017 21:13

Great - will try to get a good outline done before then.

jojowilko · 16/09/2017 22:13

Ooh I'd forgotten about NaNoWrMo but could do it this year. Could be a great way to end the year and I have a couple of weekends in November designed for chilling. Smile

TigerDragonMonkey · 16/09/2017 22:20

I will be doing NaNoWriMo :). It's the 13th year for me! I've failed the last 2 years though so I really need a win...

TheDistantSky · 06/10/2017 15:05

I'm going to join in this year.
Self-published a poetry collection last year which went well but I really want need to get this novel out. It's been lurking for a while, I just need a push!

beckythomas · 07/10/2017 05:50

Its National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), a fun approach to creative writing. Genrally participants set a goal say writing 50K words of novel in that month. It is to encourage writing in less time. I guess it happens in November this year.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 07/10/2017 18:14

Isthis NaNo thingexpensive? I've never heard of it.

MrsFionaCharming · 08/10/2017 00:51

I’m doing it this year. I tried 2 years ago, and only made it to 8,000 words before giving up.

I decided I was going to do it whilst driving home from work today, and now have 2 pages of notes and plot ideas. Last time I was a pantser, so I’m trying to be more of a planner this time and it seems to be going well!
