NaNoWriMo - what's it all about?

I know roughly the idea behind it, but I wondered if anyone had actually taken part and had any thoughts to share?

My novel is already in excess of the 50k but, is still all over the place and needs much editing.

Any thoughts appreciated, even if you considered it and decided no.

I'm way behind. But I've done 1k so far today, and will hopefully manage a few more tonight.

starchildareyoulistening · 09/11/2016 06:42

I'm on 11k and seem to have stalled now. On Monday I had a strop with my plot and decided it was all shit - went through and rewrote some key scenes so even though I did quite a lot of writing my wordcount only increased by 200 words. Yesterday I was working a long shift and didn't have the energy or motivation to write when I got home - first day so far that I haven't worked on it at all. Need to sort out my plot issues to regain momentum... hard to keep writing when I've no idea where it's going!

SnakeWitch · 09/11/2016 09:06

I am really struggling to find a balance. Now I'm getting into it, i keep getting ideas and wanting to write, but I have a 2 year old at home all the time plus all the housework. I don't feel I can squeeze it all in. I can do one or the other but not both. I'm writing as much as I can but I've not even hit 10k yet. Is anyone else having a similar problem? I feel like I've finally doing something for me, but it was a silly idea because there are too many demands on me. Sorry for the rant, just feeling a bit dispirited today!

thegirlinthecar · 09/11/2016 09:22

snakewitch I'm entirely the same. My dcs are 3 and 2 so I've been getting up at 5am to try and get some writing done, I appear to be unable to think in the evening . Dcs have also infected me with the cold so I'm feeling even less motivated . I also feel like I'm just making excuses....

thegirlinthecar · 09/11/2016 09:28

snakewitch my last sentence was aimed entirely at me by the way not you !

SnakeWitch · 09/11/2016 09:52

I'm not offended Grin

5am is commitment. I know what you mean about evenings, sometimes I just stare at the screen and I can't think of everyday words!

I think for today I might make myself a timetable and try it that way. So I know what I have to do and what windows I have to do things in. Hope you feel better soon, colds are bastards.

Brew for all, let's keep plodding on.

BroomstickOfLove · 09/11/2016 11:00

I gave up on evenings, too, and have embraced the 5am start. Almost 2,000 words by 7am.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 09/11/2016 13:30

This is my fourth year and i do these plus the camps. Always enjoy them and it means i write but lagging behind atm.

SnakeWitch · 09/11/2016 17:33

I had a brainwave that actually worked! I took the DC to soft play after school - they played while I sat scribbling by the radiator with a cup of tea Grin

How do the camps work, tomorrow ?

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 09/11/2016 17:40

Same idea but you set your word count and get allocated a cabin. They happen in April and July I think and I always enjoy them.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 09/11/2016 17:41

www.campnanowrimo.org
that is the site for the camps.

FreshwaterSelkie · 11/11/2016 17:16

Ho hum, been a middling week here. I had a motivation slump and did nothing for two days. I turned off leechblock and arsed around on the internet bitching about D. Trump instead. Not productive. However, I managed a burst of creativity this afternoon, and I'm up to 14,500 or so. The stats page tells me that means I would finish on December 9th at current rate of progress.

I am ever optimistic that I will make up lost time!

How do the camps work? I can't see much info on the link there, I think I'm being a bit thick. Would be interested in knowing more.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 11/11/2016 17:53

I'm nearly at 19k. Tiny bit behind schedule but not impossibly so.

Had a great day today. You know how sometimes characters take a while to pin down? I had one today who did the opposite, stood out very clearly in one go. Plus she has a pet monkey which is fun to write.

BroomstickOfLove · 11/11/2016 19:21

I'd be on schedule if I'd actually started writing on 1st November rather than the 9th. I think I'll give myself until 9th December to actually finish the bloody thing.

My villain is failing to misbehave.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 11/11/2016 19:55

The first time I did it I started and finished a few days late - I think it's fair enough.

SnakeWitch · 11/11/2016 20:00

19k is great going and the pet monkey sounds intriguing.

I'm not doing too bad but I feel like I need a break. I need to come up for air from my fictional world because it's starting to pull me under - I feel a bit like Frodo when the ring is starting to take him!

I went to a pilates class today and at the end the instructor said give yourselves a round of applause and actually did the clapping in a circle thing which I found amusing, so naturally my characters went to a class and had the same thing happen. It does work in the story - really Grin

Dunlurking · 12/11/2016 07:38

I've had a blip this week as well - the Trump thing (newspapers take over, don't they) and a poem I had to write for my writing group which gave me a great buzz, not least because it was something I could finish, unlike the b... novel

Going to a write in at a pub Sunday - not quite sure what happens. Do we all plug in laptops and ignore each other? What is the etiquette on speaking during the session? I think I'm breaking it already as I'm having to drag 16 year old dd along, with her GCSE mocks revision, as we're in town for something for her earlier and I can't get her back without a 2 hour return trip.

BroomstickOfLove · 12/11/2016 09:17

Phew. My villain has consented to one final evil deed prior to his redemption, AND, what's very nice about this is that it has oodles of knock- on effects for the other characters, thus solving my worry that 80% of the plot was resolved in the first third of the book. Phew. And my heavily pregnant, very girly character who manages a fashion boutique has turned out to be a total badass, which makes me happy.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 12/11/2016 21:53

At 17.5k atm

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 14/11/2016 17:36

Good day?
I had to go to the dentist today so didn't have long, managed 2K though so now on 21. If I have a good day tomorrow I could hit the halfway mark.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 15/11/2016 14:35

Halfway!

FreshwaterSelkie · 16/11/2016 19:59

Whoooo, I had a spurt over the last few days, a few chapters really came together and just absolutely flowed. at 29,000 and on course to complete by the end of November. Go me!

How's everyone else getting on?

BroomstickOfLove · 16/11/2016 21:08

I'm finally getting properly stuck in. I've not really been tallying my word count, but I'm aiming for a chapter a day at roughly 4 pages per chapter. I've got a page left to go today, and it's a potentially dull exposition scene so tricky to write.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 17/11/2016 09:13

Well done FreshwaterSelkie!
I have a cold and a headache and my brain feels bleurgh so I am struggling and missed my target yesterday, but I will plod on today.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 17/11/2016 15:56

Well, I wrote another 2K, so that's OK for a ploddy day when I didn't want to do anything. I am having the mid-book 'it's all rubbish' slump but that's par for the course. Am on 28K.
