NaNoWriMo - what's it all about?

I know roughly the idea behind it, but I wondered if anyone had actually taken part and had any thoughts to share?

My novel is already in excess of the 50k but, is still all over the place and needs much editing.

Any thoughts appreciated, even if you considered it and decided no.

Yes I've Oundle this thread very motivating too. Thanks to all. I've managed almost 3k today so am still hopeful I will make it - I've still got to write the scene in want to do most where the hero proposes and the heroine tells him he's an entitled git [rubs hands]

JosBoys · 25/11/2017 19:23

Annandale that sounds like a brilliant scene. in RL I wish that would happen in nearly every episode of Don't Tell The Bride but it never does

MrsFionaCharming · 26/11/2017 00:07

I’ve made it to 43.5k, and I’m not quite done yet.

I’ve also just realised I’ve forgotten a key part of my novel. The idea is that whilst my MC is off having an adventure, she’s writing letters to her dead best friend. This is a major part of the story, to the point where my working title is ‘Dear Gemma’ in reference to that.

Except I haven’t written the letters yet! There’s meant to be 8 of them, each multiple pages long, so that should boost my word count nicely :)

JosBoys · 26/11/2017 10:11

Well done Charming on the word count and on working out where the other words are going to come from. Happy writing everyone!

BiglyBadgers · 26/11/2017 10:27

You're practically done Charming. Get letter writing Grin

Jomaco · 26/11/2017 11:10

Congratulations to those that have already finished.

I nearly gave up on Thursday as have spent the whole month at least a day behind and I have a busy week with work next week so won't have much time to finish.
As it is I have come down with a chest infection and have had nothing else to do but sleep, eat and type!
I'm now just over 44k so think I will make it.

Witchend · 26/11/2017 12:19

Good timing for a chest infection Jomaco Wink

I'm finding I'm missing it in an odd way. I've read it through and done some corrections (and added a little).

Keep going if you're nearly there! I was surprised how pleased I felt to get there.
Dh still thinks I'm crazy though. Grin although he did say his latest bid at work was a wonderful work of fiction, was 5000 words and took him three days. Grin

Silver linings :o

I think nano has got me addicted. Now I can't stop and am now on 56k. Confused Grin

MrsFionaCharming · 26/11/2017 20:01

I’ve made it to 45k! I can practically taste the success.

JosBoys · 26/11/2017 20:55

I'm at 46.5k and realising that it's probably going to take at least 60k to tell the entire story.

MrsFionaCharming · 26/11/2017 22:17

46k!

I still haven’t added my word building scenes, or written the letters, so I think I should reach 60k easily, hoping for 70 or 80 by the final draft.

I’m currently getting DP to print it (all 84 pages of it), so I can read through it and annotate more easily.

I’m hoping to reach 50 tomorrow!

JosBoys · 27/11/2017 08:25

Printing it out seems like a good idea. On one of the NaNoWriMo forums , someone said they actually get a copy of their book printed and bound at the end regardless of what they do next with it eg submitting.

MrsFionaCharming · 27/11/2017 18:41

47,480. I’m updating my Nano stats practically every other sentence, just to watch the ‘words remaining’ count go down.

BiglyBadgers · 27/11/2017 19:53

You are sooooo close now Charming! Grin

MrsFionaCharming · 28/11/2017 00:19

Less than 2k to go now.

I’ve started going back and editting now, and it’s amazing how much extra detail I’m adding now I’ve got a clearer picture in my head.

DP has designed me a book cover and I’ve got 2 friends lined up to beta the first draft. It’s all a bit scary and real now!

JosBoys · 28/11/2017 07:39

I made it to 49,400 last night. I've got the cold so was too tired to power through to the end but should definitely make it today!

Jomaco · 28/11/2017 12:42

I'm down to my last 1500, determined to get this done today.

Will definitely not be finished at 50k though, because of starting second story 3rd of way through, I'm only half way through this one.

JosBoys · 28/11/2017 13:37

I'm just over 52,000 words - yippee!

BiglyBadgers · 28/11/2017 14:03

Yay! Go Jos! Grin Star

JosBoys · 28/11/2017 16:12

Thanks Bigly Grin
I feel like I should mark it in someway but can't think of anything . . .plus I'm probably about at least 10k away from it being finished.

IHateYourCarpet · 28/11/2017 16:50

Well done everyone Grin !

I have just over 3k to go. Manageable. Though I’m really at the point now where I’m having to get up and walk around every ten minutes which does hinder word flow Blush

Is anyone else now desperate to do this again!? I feel like I could maybe churn another one out this year!

BiglyBadgers · 28/11/2017 16:59

Maybe we should set our own challenges? A sort of nano continued writing posse.

Jomaco · 28/11/2017 17:10

Yay! I'm done. I was almost 200 words over before I realised.

Never thought I'd get finished it this year, especially with 2 days to spare.

BiglyBadgers · 28/11/2017 17:30

Whoop! Well done Jomaco Star

IHateYourCarpet · 28/11/2017 19:23

Ohhhh Jomaco that’s fab Smile

I feel like I’m sort of naturally coming to the end now, final chapter is a talk show interview, so hopefully bulky dialogue will see me through to the end Grin just under 2k to go!
