NaNoWriMo - what's it all about?

Twine88 · 29/09/2016 13:55

I know roughly the idea behind it, but I wondered if anyone had actually taken part and had any thoughts to share?

My novel is already in excess of the 50k but, is still all over the place and needs much editing.

Any thoughts appreciated, even if you considered it and decided no.

Maybe we should all just combine novels, create one super fantasy-murder-mystery-ball-on-a-summer-camp?

MrsFionaCharming · 22/11/2017 23:33

I hit 40k!!!

I don’t especially like the last 1000 or so words, but at least they exist!

annandale · 23/11/2017 06:19

Woop! That's pretty amazing.

JosBoys · 23/11/2017 12:18

Charming you're so close to the end. How exciting! Well done!
annadale now I'm sad that I don't have an excuse to throw an Austen ball.

JosBoys · 23/11/2017 14:48

Finally reached 40,000! Hurrah!
Thank you to everyone here. I'm not sure I would have persevered without this thread Flowers
And I realise I still have 10,000 words to go but it definitely seems achievable.

BiglyBadgers · 23/11/2017 15:04

Hey, so...I am totally a winner! I just hit 50k and validated on the nano site. Grin

I'm going to go have a celebratory bath. Grin

Way to go Bigly!!! Enjoy your celebratory bath!

MrsFionaCharming · 23/11/2017 19:40

Really struggling tonight, so I’ve gone back through to look for places that need more detail, only to find I’ve changed tense halfway through! D:

JosBoys · 23/11/2017 20:43

Charming I went back through adding in detail tonight too. My big realisation was that I had accidentally named a character after a friend of DH's. I hadn't realised because I kept using his first name. But he's related to the main character and I'd used her surname elsewhere. Tonight was the first time, I typed both his names together and went duh! I'm going to have to do find and replace throughout my entire book.

MrsFionaCharming · 23/11/2017 20:49

Is it a nice character? Maybe he’d be honoured!

MrsFionaCharming · 23/11/2017 22:50

Made it to 42k, and haven’t run out of story quite yet. I think I should manage 2 or 3k more reasonably easily.

Mines a YA romance, and I’ve just got to the big ‘virginity losing’ scene, and realised that if I ever publish a book my mum will want to read it. And my Granny, and my MiL.

They will all want to read my book with a teenage lesbian sex scene in it!!

Witchend · 23/11/2017 23:59

Well done Bigly!

BiglyBadgers · 24/11/2017 08:16

They will all want to read my book with a teenage lesbian sex scene in it!!

I've just written a very touching lesbian sex scene between a slightly psychopathic elf (definitely a baddie) and a blind ex-librarian who I think is probably autistic. They are totally in love and it is beautiful.

I realised the other day that about half the relationships in my book are gay and they are definitely the best ones, I suddenly thought I should put in a vaguely functional heterosexual one at some point for balance Grin

JosBoys · 24/11/2017 09:21

Charming I did a one-day writing course last month and we were talking about how you have to be brave and not think about your family reading your book Grin
Mine is littered with swearing so my very straight-laced family will be appalled.
As for my character-naming dilemma, he is a nice character. Actually the character is much nicer than DH's friend Grin

BiglyBadgers · 24/11/2017 09:28

I'm trying to tell myself that nobody is going to read it at all and that I can always just delete the whole thing when I'm done. DH has threatened to hack into my Google docs and read it in secret though, so I might let him have a look when I have done some revisions. Maybe.

TheDistantSky · 24/11/2017 12:45

Done. Phew.
Well, the word count is in but the story is only half done. I'm going to finish writing in December then tidy it up in Jan/Feb.

Now it's time for a nap!

Keep going ladies, the relief is enormous!

BiglyBadgers · 24/11/2017 13:06

Whoop! Go distantsky. Star

This feels a bit like one of those late stage pregnancy threads when everyone is waiting to pop out a baby Grin

IHateYourCarpet · 24/11/2017 13:28

Massive congratulations to everyone who’s completed Grin I’m hoping I’m still in with a chance... I should hit 45k today. Having a lot of trouble sitting down for more than ten minutes this week, so I haven’t got a great deal of writing done!

JosBoys · 24/11/2017 14:13

Well done distantsky !
I have been distracted by Christmas shopping today but hope to reach about 45,000 tonight.

annandale · 24/11/2017 19:16

You're all fantastic creative achievers Flowers

I'm stuck where I was - 2 brutal days at work and a cold meant I didn't write a word yesterday. I'm not giving up though.

Witchend · 25/11/2017 00:19

Done it! 50031 words!
I'd done about 49600 just before midnight, and pretty much finished the story, so there's an extra scene at the end which is really just space filling. It's a MG story so about right for length.

I'm not totally happy with the story, I know I was padding at times, but I think the dc will enjoy reading it. I might rewrite it sometime with other characters, as I think the basic plot's okay, just needs a certain amount of work.

I told dh I'd finished. He gave me a look and told me I was a nutcase. Grin

I suppose I better start doing some housework again. Bother!

BiglyBadgers · 25/11/2017 09:09

Yay! Well done Witchend! Poo to housework. Grin

I've decided to keep chugging away with mine for a bit more. I have point in mind that I'd like to get to with a little battle and the death of a really unpleasant first level evil character. I just need to get everyone to the right places. I think I'm looking at another 30-40k to get to that stage. I sort of feel like it's only just got really interesting.

I'm also starting to write some of the character descriptions and plot outline so if I go away and want to come back I know what's going on and who everyone is. Yes it had been pointed out to me that you usually to this stuff before you write the book. Wink

I've decided that I'm really not happy with my McGuffin and need to work on that a bit. I like the plot, world and characters but the actual peril thing is a bit ropey and needs some filling out.

MrsFionaCharming · 25/11/2017 09:43

DP convinced me to take last night off and have a takeaway / watch a film with him, so only got 200 words done. Plus I’m on the oncall rota for tomorrow and someone has called in sick, so I’ll probably lose my day off. Panicking a little that I won’t finish in time now!

JosBoys · 25/11/2017 10:42

Witchend congratulations! Maybe have another day off the housework to celebrate your achievement!
I love how motivated everyone on here is. My regional group on NaNoWriMo has fallen very quiet and lots of people have obviously slowed down or stopped. I may have been tempted to do the same if I hadn't joined this thread.
