Advice on writing erotica

NCJustWondering · 07/02/2015 14:11

NC, obviously. I fancy having a go at writing erotica on kindle but want some advice from readers. I've downloaded a lot as research (ahem) - mainly short stories, mainly free - and have noticed that most of them included acts which (IMO) were mainly for male pleasure.

If you enjoy reading erotica, do you get turned on by reading something that is for the pleasure of the man involved or do you prefer to read only stories about the woman being on the receiving end (so to speak!)?

Just a quick and obvious example - are you happy to read about men receiving oral sex or would you prefer to read about women receiving it?

Also, if you are reading that kind of story, do you think it should always end in penetrative sex? Would you feel short-changed if it didn't, but if the woman was satisfied?

I am writing for a female market and am personally a bit sick of reading about women getting turned on primarily by doing things to men.

Thanks.

Someone on here a fee days ago used to term 'wide on' in reference to an aroused female!

Oh, that's it. I'm definitely going to be calling it dp's "masterful yum yum" from now on! Grin

I haven't read a whole lot of erotica, but I hate it when the word 'sex' is used as a noun for female genitals.

'His fingers explored her sex'. Wtf?

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 07/02/2015 19:00

Christy, I'm guilty at using that.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 07/02/2015 19:03

"I want those pretty painted lips around my cock," Cailan pushed her legs apart, hand sliding up her thigh, to her sex, "But before that, I wanna hear you scream my name as my tongue is buried in your cunny."

Cunny?

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 07/02/2015 19:04

Hey, its set in medieval times.

TheyLearnedFromBrian · 07/02/2015 19:06

'Me, me, me' she thought with irritation, as the increasingly annoying Cailan continued with his whiny demands, his voice rising and falling in unison with the scrape of his unfortunately sharp fingernails across her twinkle.

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 07/02/2015 19:07

I think "sex" and "down there" are ok, at least they're subtle, not too gynaecological (definitely no vaginas or vulvas please) or offensive. It's not that I'm terribly bothered by the word cunt but I can't read it without imagining some big skin headed Vinny Jones type shouting "You cunt! You slaaag" Grin it's a bit too harsh.

Too British for "panties" too. No-one over here actually says that, do they?Hmm

TheyLearnedFromBrian · 07/02/2015 19:08

Medieval times where people say wanna?

I thought it was all prithee, I'll have you in the privy.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 07/02/2015 19:09

Thanks for that critique of my work Brian.

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 07/02/2015 19:10

I cracked up at twinkle, Brian Grin

Evening all.

Not surprisingly, we've had a few reports about this thread.

Just wanted to reassure everyone that the OP is indeed a long-term MNer on a name change, not a newbie here for some kicks.

Okay?

As you were...

TheyLearnedFromBrian · 07/02/2015 19:20

Oh Tali I'm sorry! Just being silly on the thread. Didn't mean to annoy.

Sorry Confused

I don't write erotica. I do write adult pantomimes. (That's me probably outed). As a result, I find it impossible to take seriously any reference to:

  • snakes
  • baps
  • flutes, oboes or pretty much any other wind instrument
  • clams
  • starfish
  • tunnels
  • tackle

This list isn't exhaustive but it'd be exhausting to provide a fuller compendium.

The best advice I ever got about writing came from the producer of the show I was first paid to write for. He always said "If your material doesn't amuse you, then why should any other fucker find it funny?". I suspect exactly the same goes for erotica. So don't start by writing for everyone else. Write what you'd like to read.

ClashCityRocker · 07/02/2015 19:22

And be careful that the acts you write about are actually do-able.

'Pinning her legs back, he caressed her cheek whilst tweaking her nipple'....

....what, is she shagging a guy with three arms now?

Also I hate the use of the word 'plunging', she's not a kitchen sink.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 07/02/2015 19:22

Its ok, Brian, I'm a writing noob. I dont get much critique. You have a point about "Wanna" though.

At least its better that than 50 shades shite.

EBearhug · 07/02/2015 19:23

reader's wives, in polyester

Polyester should have no part in any erotica. If there are any manmade fabrics, I think PVC is probably the only acceptable one.

The best thing to do is to write things that work for you, and then get other people to read it and see what they say.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 07/02/2015 19:25

Plunging reminds me of unclogging a toilet.

Nest of curls, that was the one I was thinking off now.

Oh and something a rose blooming or some shit.

Bair · 07/02/2015 19:26

Is there a sexual term for genitals? DH and I don't refer to them during the act. When not intimate we're rather course, cock and cunt being how we chose to refer to our own genitals.

Euphemisms seem twee.

His masterful Yum Yum

Oh no. That malt loaf advert with the yum yum song was irritating enough before but it's just gone to a whole new level...
