NaNoWriMo 2014

Anyone else going to do it?

I thought I'd start the thread now as it's a good idea to do some thinking before you start so you can really hit the ground running in November.

For those who haven't done it before, the idea is to write 50k words of a new novel in November.

It's a good way to get motivated to get words down on paper, especially if you've always wanted to write a novel but never managed a whole one before.

There's an official website at NaNoWriMo.org where you can register if you want, but you don't have to.

Anyone?

It doesn't sound silly at all.

Good luck to everyone, I'm writing alongside you and cheering you on! Smile

And we're off!

Well, sort of. I wanted to start something completely new this year, rather than trying to work on one of the half-developed ideas that has been floating around my head for ages, but couldn't seem to think of anything. Finally came up with a vague idea around 10pm so have spent the first hour or so of NaNo 2014 developing a rough outline rather than actually getting any words down, but at least I have something to work with later today. Still not entirely sure of most some of the details but it's a start!

How's everyone else getting on?

GrendelsMinim · 01/11/2014 10:25

And we're off! I'll see how I go this year, but at least I've started with a solid 2000 words...

FeliciaHardy · 01/11/2014 13:16

Can't believe it's November already! After saying I was going to be more prepared this year I've had a busy fortnight and not had time to think about it. Not even sure I'm going to get a chance to start until Monday but I've done it in worse circumstances before. Just hope it doesn't become another 50,000 words of drivel, I'd like at least something to work on afterwards.

I still have a bit of an outline and some notes written down on characters so will get my imagination running so I have something to write down.

BertieBotts · 01/11/2014 17:34

I've done 500. 1%! Grin I have a horrible feeling it is drivel, though. But hopefully, perhaps, workable.

Cherrypi · 01/11/2014 17:47

Ooh I'd forgotten about this. Still no ideas. Think I'll start writing and see what happens. Wink

Tanukisan · 01/11/2014 18:44

I'm away staying with friends so writing long handed in an a5 notebook - filled 15 (tiny) pages this morning.

Tanukisan · 02/11/2014 13:07

How's everyo doing? I reckon I have just over 3000 words and hoping to get some more done today to cash in on my early enthusiasm Grin

Tanukisan · 02/11/2014 13:16

Just counted - I've actually got 4000!

BertieBotts · 02/11/2014 14:29

I've got 900. Hit a total block. Apparently it's not a good plan for me Grin

Will see how I get on tomorrow when I have a child and husband free day.

HerVagesty · 02/11/2014 18:01

2100 so far! I've got some to add that i've jotted down but the kids are wild and we had a big Sunday Roast today so not much time Wine

TunipTheUnconquerable · 02/11/2014 19:54

I haven't started yet - been in London with the kids so scheduled to start tomorrow. Well done everyone who's chalked up some words so far.

OP posts:
BertieBotts · 02/11/2014 20:32

Well I've pushed it over 1000 but not by much Grin

MrsFionaCharming · 03/11/2014 01:36

Just signing in!

I'm on 3714 typed words so far, but I wrote a lot by hand today whilst out, so I'll add that to tomorrow's word count.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 03/11/2014 12:58

Just seen this - going to start today (eek!). Have an extremely sketchy idea, which I could flesh out a bit more if I could find a notebook I scribbled something in about 8 years ago...

What is winning in this context? Does it just mean finishing, or is it an actual competition where the best novel wins?

TunipTheUnconquerable · 03/11/2014 13:03

It just means finishing.

OP posts:
CallingAllEngels · 03/11/2014 14:28

I haven't started and have no plan Confused

TunipTheUnconquerable · 03/11/2014 15:16

2600 - just about hit my quota for the day Smile

Tomorrow everyone gets plague and the horrible deaths begin.

OP posts:
CallingAllEngels · 03/11/2014 17:09

I'm considering just freewriting using story cubes as prompts, or writing a short short story every day inspired by something different, or writing stories for my son....I don't know!

Anyone ever just started with no plan whatsover?

The year I won I had my plot mapped out and it was a struggle with a 1 year old who napped to get through.

This time I have no clue, a 3 year old who doesn't nap, am 7 months pg and working up till the end of November when I hand over to my maternity c I ver.

Am I insane?

GrendelsMinim · 03/11/2014 18:35

And just checking in to say that I'm on track so far. I've got a rough plot outline, but I'm planning just to write what bits of it I fancy from day to day, and let myself enjoy the creative flow.

TunipTheUnconquerable · 03/11/2014 18:44

Engels if you go down the route of writing stories for your son you'll never make 50k - writing for children uses far fewer words. No reason why you shouldn't redefine winning as a lower number, though.

OP posts:
CallingAllEngels · 03/11/2014 19:12

Okay, I have a roughish plan.

Adventure fantasy quest. No character names but that'll come.

Okay, now to get started!

BertieBotts · 03/11/2014 19:26

I hate everything about my novel and feel embarrassed about it - although I have quite enjoyed writing a couple of scenes. I think it could come together but I am shockingly unmotivated :( I thought the goal would do it for me but so far it isn't. Maybe I need to go back and read some pep talks.

MrsFionaCharming · 03/11/2014 20:07

Mine's pretty awful. The idea's a bit over done - think Hunger Games / Divergent YA novel with teen girl who must save the world. But it's not that that's the problem, it's my awful prose. I'm not sure I realised quite how terrible my writing is!

Hopefully as long as I get all the ideas down, I can work on my writing style later on.
