What's your favourite Irish winning song in Eurovision?

For the week that's in it.

I was going to set up a poll but I could only pick six options and we had seven winners.

Favourite is Johnny Logan's 'What's another year?' closely followed by 'In your eyes?' performed by Niamh Kavanagh.

Least favourite is 'The Voice' sung by Eimear Quinn. I always thought it was very waily.

I have a soft spot for 'Terminal 3' performed by Linda Martin but it only came second. I just watched her singing it and she was magnificent with her red hair, dangly earrings and jumpsuit style outfit (don't think it's actually a jumpsuit though).

Ohhhh, I just found out that Johnny Logan has been invited to appear as a guest on the 7th May. Which is Tuesday night, so not the final itself. Might record it and just play his bit. I'm a fan of the Eurovision but not to the extent that I'd watch the heats.

I saw Johnny Logan perform at Electric Picnic. It was genuinely one of the best things I have experienced, ever!

Sakura7 · 04/05/2024 19:12

In Your Eyes closely followed by Hold Me Now.

I've randomly met Johnny Logan through work and he's such a nice man as well as being a legend!

We are going to do well this year with Bambie, the clip from rehearsals looks amazing.

ASighMadeOfStone · 04/05/2024 19:27

Hold Me Now just for Johnny being so emotional he couldn't finish singing.

Huge soft spot for Niamh not winning with It's For You. Magnificent vocals and she had a sore throat.

But really, all of them in the big years. Johnny, Linda, Niamh, Rock N Roll Years, Eimear. All of them.

In the anniversary documentary, one of the commentators was saying Ireland did so well because they chose good songs and didn't think about winning Eurovision but just putting on their best singers/songs.

@Jitterybugs I love that too.

Johnny performing Euphoria in the semi final! Why am I crying haha

Liv999 · 07/05/2024 23:20

In your eyes for me, Niamh Kavanagh had a fabulous voice, we beat sonias entry for the uk into second place, and it was the second time we won in two years so it was extra special I think

What's another year. His voice is so emotive and the lyrics are so sad.

I love all the winners except I am the voice, thought it was shite. Did Bagatelle win with somewhere in Europe? Can't remember but I thought that was shite too!

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 08/05/2024 23:34

As for Bambi thug, I can understand why the song isn't getting airplay, it's not a nice song to listen to but it was a great theatrical performance. I think it could do well!

SleepPrettyDarling · 08/05/2024 23:37

All Kinds of Everything, sung by Terry Hall and Sinead O’Connor is one of my favourite covers. She is utterly GORGEOUS in the video.

But for an original version, Linda Martin’s Why Me? is 😍 - verse, verse, chorus, middle eight, KEY CHANGE 💖, chorus = winner alright!!

TakingTheHorseToFrance · 08/05/2024 23:38

Rock n Roll kids. Beautiful song.

Non winning song I absolutely love Lipstick by Jedward (did it even make the final???)

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 08/05/2024 23:53

@TakingTheHorseToFrance It came 8th I think. Great tune!

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 09/05/2024 02:52

What's Another Year by Johnny. The words are brilliant and it has a sadness to it and he sang it with such emotion.
As kids many many a moon ago it was such a treat to be allowed to stay up late to watch The Eurovision, a completely different show then and we would be so excited. It's not the same anymore but nice to see Ireland through.

LadyEloise1 · 09/05/2024 09:09

I thought Lipstick was really good too @TakingTheHorseToFrance (love the name). A real bouncy "get up and dance" track.

Linda Martin was great too.

Yes, everyone watched the Eurovision back in the day. There were no streaming services and far less TV channels.

We got sweets for it, it was a mini toy show 😂

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 09/05/2024 13:36

I used to watch it too from very early on.
I suppose my parents must have been watching it but they stopped watching it at some stage. My earliest memories are of Bucks Fizz and Johnny Logan's win. And I watched the Golden Years of the 90s too. They were great. Imagine putting on the show in Millstreet now 😅

AncientSkaterGirl · 09/05/2024 13:46

The Voice by Eimar Quinn, loved it so much I went and bought the CD 😂 I also loved her dress (rorally my vibe! )

UtopiaPlanitia · 09/05/2024 22:58

In recent years my favourite Irish song that didn’t get through was ‘That’s Rich' by Brooke; I also loved 'Lipstick' by Jedward but I think either of Johnny Logan’s winners could be my favourite Irish winning song.

I still get excited coming up to Eurovision every year cos I always enjoy it. It was such a treat getting to stay up late to watch it when I was a weeun and that affection for it has lasted for decades 😊

Liv999 · 10/05/2024 21:44

I remember sitting on my dad's lap watching Johnny Logan win with Hold me now, i was about 7 i think, was just thinking about it the other day, my dad passed away a few years ago 😢 but I have such fond memories of the Eurovision growing up was always a big thing in our house

DanielGault · 10/05/2024 23:04

Rock n roll kids on the late late now. Still sounds great. And yet man has ditched the bad hair. Actually getting a wee lump in the throat 😳

AsYouMightBe · 10/05/2024 23:27

I have just been in Macroom, and walked past a very old school pharmacy that had a ‘Comhghairdeachas, Bambi!!!’ sign in the window in between sets of Yardley’s talc and verruca plasters.

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 11/05/2024 13:38

@AsYouMightBe love it! I was only saying to DH that Macroom must be feeling a bit confused these days.
