What's your favourite Irish winning song in Eurovision?

For the week that's in it.

I was going to set up a poll but I could only pick six options and we had seven winners.

Favourite is Johnny Logan's 'What's another year?' closely followed by 'In your eyes?' performed by Niamh Kavanagh.

Least favourite is 'The Voice' sung by Eimear Quinn. I always thought it was very waily.

I have a soft spot for 'Terminal 3' performed by Linda Martin but it only came second. I just watched her singing it and she was magnificent with her red hair, dangly earrings and jumpsuit style outfit (don't think it's actually a jumpsuit though).

I've always had a soft spot for rock n roll kids.

I love rock n roll kids. Brilliant song.

It's hard to say because I liked them all at the time. I love 'The Voice' though.

"Why Me?" has a brilliant section towards the end that makes me think of slow dancing with a crush at a school disco, but as an overall song, What's Another Year" does it for me.

Why me is quality tbf. But quite cheesy (I love a bit of cheese!) love what's another year too. I love all the old stuff really, it's a pity it all went off the rails so badly.

DanielGault · 04/05/2024 10:12

And Hold me now, you couldn't not like that!

MegCleary · 04/05/2024 10:16

deffo hold me now

IrritableVowel · 04/05/2024 10:18

Not a fan of The Voice, probably because I can't sing along... the rest are bangers

Edited: forgot about Dana. Dana is not a banger

Same. It's good, but I have to be able to sing along 😁

I obviously try to join in but it is not enjoyable for anyone who happens to be within earshot

Hood Me Now. We once visited Dublin and saw Johnny Logan out and about. I was ridiculously excited!

I'm amazing so everyone just loves listening to me 😂😂😂😂

‘Terminal Three’ is kind of depressing, when you think about it — it’s a song about waiting in Arrivals for a transatlantic flight that’s bringing back a man who apparently ‘turned his back and walked away’ and left her ages ago, then abruptly phoned her the night before and said he was coming home, and appears to have asked her to collect him ‘if she ‘still feels the same’ without giving any clue about whether he wants to resume the relationship or not, the cocky bastard.

(It’s also always bothered me which airport it was — no Irish airport has three terminals, so I always vaguely imagine Linda Martin all flame-haired in her white jumpsuit, at Heathrow at the crack of dawn wondering why he just couldn’t get the tube like everyone else.)

DanielGault · 04/05/2024 10:43

I don't know this Terminal Three song, what year is it?

IrritableVowel · 04/05/2024 10:46

I have just made myself the shortest ever playlist on Spotify and I am thoroughly enjoying cleaning my kitchen to this soundtrack.

I am not sure if I am to be envied or pitied

Envied, 😁 enjoy belting them out!

ConstitutionHill · 04/05/2024 10:49

How about "My Lovely Horse" by Father Ted?

DanielGault · 04/05/2024 10:51

AsYouMightBe · 04/05/2024 10:45

1984?

Dya know what, I don't remember that at all. It's before my time, but so is what's another year and i've always known that. Mad.

AsYouMightBe · 04/05/2024 10:52

I just looked up beat Linda Martin into second place in 1984, and it was the mildly horrifying ‘Doggi-Loo-Diggy-Ley’ by Sweden. And the UK got booed.

DanielGault · 04/05/2024 10:54

We clearly need some sort of Linda Martin mafia, she has been wronged!!!

MorphandMindy · 04/05/2024 11:04

I love The Voice, love love love it. I always remember being awestruck watching it performed on the stage that first time - and the chills it gave me. Absolutely perfect song, perfect staging, touch of drama, Celtic but not cheesey, authentic and modern and reminiscent of ancient Ireland all at the same time... stunning performance and beautiful vocals.

I've just played it three more times typing this 😂

Doteycat · 04/05/2024 11:06

TaraMock · 04/05/2024 14:26

I love Rock-n-Roll Kids, great song for a sing along 🎵 🎶
I also like The Voice for it's ethereal feel, but I definitely can't sing along (bag of cats springs to mind!)

All Kinds of Everything. By Kevin McAleer.

What's another year though , seriously.
