Hotels overlooking a river for no more than 90 euro per night

the thread about old fashioned convalescent holidays got me thinking. I'd love to take a pile of books to a hotel overlooking a river and just spend about five nights, I'd read, watch netflix, do some yoga, walk around the town, perhaps, look out the window, order food to my room, or if I was feeling brave sit at the bar.

Can anybody suggest anywhere? I dont' have a car so it has to over look a river and be near a station! I did come up with the landmark hotel in carrick-on-shannon but it's 129 per night and gets pricier in to the milder weather. Looks nice though.

How far are you happy to travel.

Lurking9to5 · 14/03/2022 18:34

I'm in south dublin and I'd go wherever the trains took me!

this looks nice and it's on a direct bus route, the 736

Gonnagetgoing · 14/03/2022 19:19

Trains go there but no idea re buses.

Gonnagetgoing · 14/03/2022 19:20

I’m saying Sligo because stepdad is from there. WB Yeats in Ballisodare graveyard, Knock if you’re religious, seaweed baths.

LookItsMeAgain · 14/03/2022 19:23

When are you thinking of travelling?

Lurking9to5 · 14/03/2022 19:24

I think June, maybe late may. Can't til then.

Depends when you want to go, but outside high season have a look at the Lakeside Hotel in Killaloe, Co Clare. It's right on the River Shannon and close to the town.

Unfortunately there's no station in the town itself but you can get a train or bus to Limerick then bus to Killaloe, or train/bus to Birdhill which is closer and get a taxi to the village.

The Kilkenny River Court hotel has rooms from €90
Not sure of their availability though.

Riverside Hotel in Sligo

Do great deals, on the river and in the town, food is lovely and my daughter works there so would see you right :)

Letterlike · 14/03/2022 19:28

Maybe River Court Hotel in Kilkenny? Also, I’d recommend ringing whatever hotel you’re interested in and tell them what you’re looking for. They might be able to direct you to some dates when they are quieter/cheaper. Hope you get your break, sounds niceSmile

The Riverbank House Hotel in Wexford has rooms from €67 but again I don't know when you're travelling so I can't guarantee that those prices will hold forever :)

LookItsMeAgain · 14/03/2022 19:34

As soon as you go end of May or June you're into the times when the schools are off and prices shoot through the roof then and availability is very hit and miss. You could do a bit of a tour though. Get a couple of nights in Wexford by the Slaney, on to Waterford by the Three Sisters, and on to Cork perhaps or Kilkenny from there. You'd still be able to get a Bus Eireann bus back up to Dublin when you're done?

What about the Wooden bridge in Avoca. The new part is on the river. Lovely area with the meeting of the waters etc

Lurking9to5 · 14/03/2022 19:39

I'd love to do a little tour. 67 for wexford looks good. I've been to wexford a few times though. It's nice. Sligo or carrick on shannon or kilkenny. I have been to kilkenny years ago but there was a hotel overlooking the river, near the castle and I remember thinking I'd love to stay there.

Even 4 nights might seem like too many. I'm thinking now three is more realistic. I should do this though. I haven't been anywhere in SO LONG it is embarrassing.

oh yes, that river is beautiful. Does that hotel over look the meeting of the waters, I must google that, that's the kind of view I want.

Stayed in a lovely place which overlooks not one but TWO rivers in County Wicklow. Accessible by bus but would involve at least one change. The Meetings

City Hotel, Derry? Sligo has a lovely one too mentioned further up the page

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 14/03/2022 19:55

I've stayed in Woodenbridge a few times. My favourite rooms are upstairs in the lodge overlooking the river. I'm not sure how much of a river view there is from the main hotel, but the lodge is right beside the river. The food is very good but I haven't had room service there, I'm not sure if they do it. You might have to amble over to the hotel for meals.

youwouldthink · 14/03/2022 20:02

If you come to Wex the Riverbank is great. It looks out over the Slaney and you can sit in by the window drinking coffee and watching the world. Takes 5 mins to walk over the bridge to town and if you walk along the Quay you could do breakfast/brunch at Waffel Haus...yum!

@Lurking9to5 - my stepdad’s from Sligo. It’s west coast, I think they have a castle (from recollection, lots of mountains and Strand Hill is near by. Sligo Town from what I recall is small but a town. You’re not too far from Galway.
