Hospitals are cancelling appointments, a transplant was cancelled, we are going to be in lockdown... Why the delay? If they do it now there's hope we may get a Christmas...

Even if there was (which I don't believe) I won't be sticking to it.

Abitlost2 · 23/11/2021 16:35

That's the thing, people can just have big celebrations and gatherings inside houses regardless of everything being closed. Also there's going to be a big hike in energy bills , so that along with ppl who can't work due to another lockdown will be v tough...
I don't want a big christmas if it means sacrificing our dcs schooling in january. Also I find in RL the one who are very okay or even positive re lockdowns are those with v secure jobs, big family support networks anyway and who aren't trying to work with small dcs at home. We actually did ok with homeschooling but found the lack of facilities and sports hard.
I also think Ireland has a serious problem with obesity now which affects our health service massively, every second person i see is over-weight here and lots of kids too. So keeping everyone locked in the houses unanable to go to gyms, swimming or team sports also affects pur health service.

My main contribution to lockdown one was trying new cake recipes, some had to be tested twice. I now have a sort of cake tummy attached to my ordinary tummy, which won't go away.

Most people really seem to be convinced another lockdown is in the way unfortunately. I'm dreading it. I'm a sahm so not too affected as I didn't have childcare issues but the whole monotonous drudge of it was horrible. I remember last January seemed to go on for six months. Also I've just found a great exercise class and for the first time in years I'm enjoying getting fit again. I'm dreading that stopping

Puppalicious · 23/11/2021 19:58

Christ, is Ireland ever going to learn re lockdowns? Longest restrictions in Europe and now people are clamouring for another lockdown. It almost makes me want to move to England….

Puppalicious · 23/11/2021 20:00

And how on earth would lockdown now give us a Christmas? We locked down last year “to save Christmas”, that didn’t exactly work out. When lockdowns lift - cases rise again. They don’t go away - well certainly not if you lift them in winter, summer seems to have more leeway.

JaneJeffer · 23/11/2021 21:02

I don't think people actually want it. I think the media are saying they do but I don't know what they are basing that on.

honeyrider · 23/11/2021 21:10

I don't know anyone who wants another lockdown apart from the teachers I know.

CliffsofMohair · 23/11/2021 21:29

@PleasantBirthday

I got married a decade ago so it's nothing to me, but I do feel a bit sorry for the Irish brides reading the wedding thread - they can't do right!

Anyway, antigen tests should be in with the Bold Things.
@Cherrytart23 the main story on rte news says hospitals have cancelled appts and a transplant had to be cancelled.

@PenelopeVonDelius yes

@AnyFucker I'd rather see us take small steps like return to click and collect and homeschooling if it meant hospital appts could continue. A family member had surgery to remove cancer a couple of weeks ago but and their surgery was dependent on there being enough hospital beds and they were only told the morning of the surgery that it was actually able to go ahead.

I hope not either @eggandonion but its hard to see how we can gain control over it with so many cases every day.
My local hospital has always worked like that pre covid. You wouldn't know the operation was going ahead until the morning of. I had my child 10 years ago and was only told on the morning that they couldn't do it that day because there was no beds.

fiasco2021111 · 23/11/2021 21:46

Don't they just say this every year now like last year they were threatening us with another lockdown in the run up to Christmas. I always thought it was just so more people got vaccinated to avoid a lockdown and this year it's so everyone gets a booster.

JaneJeffer · 23/11/2021 22:30

But we haven't been offered a booster!

FMSucks · 23/11/2021 22:51

Well I’m just back from a sold out 3 Arena to see Ricky Gervais (he was absolutely amazing!) Everyone looked like they were having a great time and it was lovely to see. I think you’ve two hopes of anyone playing by the rules now.

We’ve had our jabs, what more do people want? If you want to lock yourself down, knock yourself out. I’m double jabbed and got Covid two months later. I am done as are most people I know, even the ones who were very scared at the start.

Abitlost2 · 24/11/2021 16:13

You can match the lockdown enthusiasts to the jobs very easily I find the ones receiving full pay for not /working a lot less

eggandonion · 24/11/2021 16:37

I got more on the pup than I do at work most weeks. I work part time. But I was starting to feel physically weak, and mentally tired. I need the exercise and the social side of going to work.
I think everyone around me feels the same. Except my daughter who works in healthcare, and would like a few days working from home.

Mynameismargot · 24/11/2021 16:59

I thought that if there was lockdown the point of it would be so hospitals can keep on functioning not 'to save Christmas'? Isn't that why until hospital numbers stopped being stable there was no talk of lockdown.
Abhannmor · 25/11/2021 20:40

I'm also double jabbed and got covid a month after no 2. No sign of the booster yet. Doubt I'll be called before Christmas. V worried about my ex who has COPD. It's rampant in schools but what can they do?

Puppalicious · 25/11/2021 20:57

I see NPHET are recommending masks from third class up, and from age 9 in other settings.

Puppalicious · 25/11/2021 21:01

Also see that Pfizer has been authorised for 5 up. Not sure how I feel about that given covid seems to be less dangerous for kids than other things we don’t vaccinate routinely for, like RSV, and if vaccinations aren’t stopping transmission I’m not sure what’s the point? My kids have all their other vaccines I guess so what’s the difference….

eggandonion · 26/11/2021 09:32

And just like that...we have a new mutation. Just in time for Christmas. I might just take to the bed.
My daughter had the swine flu vaccine following a spell of ill health. It was a difficult decision, but she had been in and out of hospital. I appreciate that parents will have to think about this, and process the idea.
I work in retail and my customers are very good on mask wearing and sanitising. As are the adults in the local supermarkets. But there always seem to be unmasked 10 year olds dashing around. I glare at them. It must be an easier decision to try masks in classrooms than to vaccinate?

justasking111 · 26/11/2021 18:00

Chicken licken says there's a new strain for Xmas. Well I'm a bit of a cynic because certain areas in my country ignore each and every health warning, have done since the beginning. While we fly import we're gonna have to live with it.

EmeraldShamrock · 26/11/2021 18:13

If the government lockdown, they would save Christmas they'd extend until January or June.
It's an absolute joke.
Dreadful news of another strain, will it ever end.

EmeraldShamrock · 26/11/2021 18:16

I'm in a similar mindset, if it was a one off vaccine I'd do it, the booster puts me off if every year.
I felt rough after the vaccine too.

Udouhun · 26/11/2021 18:43

honey rider I'm a teacher and have no interest whatsoever in another lockdown and nor does any other teacher I know
