What age to let DC stay up for the toy show??

DD is 7 and asked to stay up this year (we usually record it and put it on middle of the day Saturday). I’ve said ok. But other DD is almost 4 and I’m not sure what to do with her! I think she would manage staying up for the start but fall asleep during it. Or stay awake and be massively overtired.

So what age did your start staying up?

What is the Toy Show ?

Everyone from Ireland will know the Late, Late toy show!!
Its 1 special tradition at Christmas so mine can stay up as long as they want.
Anyone not familiar with this its on RTE station, Irish station but English spoken.

When my DDs were young we used to let them stay up until the first ad break, then they would watch it all the next day. I'd let the 7 year old stay up, she'll probably be happy to watch it again with her sister the next day.

Mine are 6 and 4 and while the 6 year old would cope fine with the late night, 4 year old would be a crying mess. Ergo they both miss out but will be none the wiser. Hopefully it rains on Sunday and they can watch the repeat

Last year, 7&9 was our first "live" watch. There's no way I would have coped the next day with the older one any earlier! They are both super excited for tomorrow night although grumpy they can't have their friend to sleep over like last year

We were about six age when they were allowed stay up later for the Toy Show. We get prepped with PJs, special treats and Hot Chocolate in Christmas mugs and get cosy on the couch. We normally record the whole show as someone usually falls asleep mid show (or even before the first ad break 😁) so we watch it (fast forwarding the ads and other bits we didn't enjoy) the next day.

Makes a tradition and let's kids feel like the have control of bedtime for once.

Let them stay up if they want and carry them in when they flake. At least theres no early Saturday morning training to get them up for this year

Let them stay up and if they fall asleep carry them up to bed. I'd imagine that's what most people do

Is there a catch up on Sunday? The planner shows Saturday. We’re in the U.K. and hoping it will be on the RTEplayer.
I would let the 7(almost 8) year old stay up but he’d be a wreck tomorrow and little brother would be incensed so we’ll do it in the afternoon if we can.

I actually just realised we’ll have to watch it on RTEplayer as we got rid of Sky earlier this year!! Hope it works ok.

DH is being dispatched for treats with the weekly shop tonight.

in a related tangent - has anyone else noticed the amount of “Late Late treat box” things around. Mostly decorated cupcakes and doughnuts and chocolate etc. Just what I need to be giving my children at 9.30pm!

I like to see those treat boxes being supported in some ways because they're usually made by local places/cafes. But i still wouldn't buy them because i can just go and buy sweets and goodies myself.

Yup, that's what we always did. "Kids" are now 25 and 19 and will still be sitting down with us to watch the Toy Show - it's the real start to the Christmas season, even these days!!

My 5 year is asking to stay up, he heard about it in Creche. Surely that's too young?! I feel a bit mean...

Can you watch it on catch up on rte player? Mine will never cope staying up but I’d love to introduce them to it! It was a proper fixture in my childhood

We in London those so not sure about being able to see it from over the water.

@jennie0412 I am thinking the exact same. If they want to watch it then let them off. No way would I send a child to bed tonight who wanted to stay up for it.

Wasn't it brilliant. I did wonder how it would be without a studio audience, but it was perfect - the kids were nearly more relaxed than usual. Loved Saoirse, Adam and especially lovely Michael singing with Dermot Kennedy ❤

Was a great show tonight. Adam, Saoirse and Michael the highlights. Cried my eyes out and wow at the amount raised for the appeal!

Amazing again. I was also thinking it wasn't going to have the same buzz without the audience but it really was a 2020 toy show. So many highlights- that young teen singing oh wow he was fantastic.

We donated here too- can't believe how much was raised over 2 hours only!!! That's phenomenal
