Sinn Féin in the lead! FF & FG surprised?! What do you think? Exciting or scary times?!

I have always been a Fine Gael voter. I'm from a long line of FG voters, many active in the party, who would be horrified by how much I want Mary Lou to succeed.

I really want to like Leo. He looks the part but he's not speaking to me. I am self employed in rural Ireland and neither FF or FG have sounded like they know I or any of my family or friends exist in the 20 years I have lived here (having worked abroad for a decade post uni). I even have a soft spot for Micheál Martin (who can resist a Cork accent) But I am not a farmer so he's not representing me either.

So why is Mary Lou so appealing? I couldn't even listen to Gerry Adams. Is it the fact that because she's not northern I'm not thinking IRA? Or because we really have moved past that Hmm, or is it that we are so, so sick of the entrenched fat cats of FF and FG that anything (well, almost, you can keep Aontu) will be better?

I'd love to hear I'm not alone in finding this upcoming election more exciting than previous ones.

All the sane people on this thread!?

I've been keeping my gob so firmly shut all day at work!

JaneJeffer · 10/02/2020 19:59

this is the first that I’ve heard of it
Standard Mary Lou.

Apileofballyhoo · 10/02/2020 20:32

Well thank you very much FF, FG and Labour. Now we have this.

Apileofballyhoo · 11/02/2020 00:22

FF got one more seat than SF in the end. The three parties are incredibly close.

NothingWrong · 11/02/2020 01:34

I didn't see an army council of terrorists at their latest Árd Fheis? Quite a statement to make.

NothingWrong · 11/02/2020 09:55

Gotta love WWN

Apileofballyhoo · 11/02/2020 10:22

I'm sure Mícheál is very disappointed, after all under the old system it's his turn.

Mayorquimby2 · 11/02/2020 11:21

It still probably will be, but he'll have to learn all the verses of "go on home British soldiers" maybe shift some "snipers at work" hoodies on his local FB trading page first

I think yer man Cullinane has kindly provided us all with a sharp reminder of who we have voted for. And if Sinn Féin had reacted with: no, that was not appropriate, etc then there may have been a sliver of hope that they are different (than we all know they are) but they didn't so let's hope they continue to act the thug brazenly and let those who ticked their boxes have their eyes opened.

eggandonion · 11/02/2020 13:38

Mary Lou never seems to have seen, heard or read whatever the latest scandal is. Like Robert McCartney was murdered but nobody saw because they were 'in the toilet', nobody has seen the phone footage of Lyra McKee, etc.
She needs a better media person to let her know what's going on.

daisyhead08 · 11/02/2020 13:38

Fickle that's my only hope at the moment.

SalmonOfKnowledge · 11/02/2020 14:25

@NothingWrong what 👏😑

Apileofballyhoo · 11/02/2020 15:33

Mary Lou is too busy being a career politician to keep an eye on details.

Voila212 · 11/02/2020 15:34

I would love to know how many of those who voted Sinn Fein did so because they wanted a United Ireland? My thinking was a very few, yet there are several headlines today stating 'Mary Lou wants border poll', 'Mary Lou says there will be a United Ireland '. Surely they should concentrate on getting a government up and running and do what they promised before talks of a border poll.

Two things my husband discussed over lunch with colleagues...
The IMF will be back within two years if Sinn Fein take control of finance (to be honest the IMF might be a better lot to run things than any current politicians)
Leo won't get his pension unless he stays on until April, so forming a government might take a few weeks, say until Easter.
William and Kate are coming to visit next month, so maybe best to scrub up a few senators for that.

SalmonOfKnowledge · 11/02/2020 16:57

I know, they will have to accelerate the construction of so much social housing in the next 4 yea5s. How will they pay for it?
I know it is a priority but are those young SF voters who voted for SF believing they would solve the housing crisis going to enjoy more tax ?

Apparently the exit poll survey pretty much said people don't mind more tax in exchange for services.

The IRA is now a mob business - protection money and illegal activities. They might build them cheap but they’ll be death traps - like the ones built in Donaghmede by the ex
IRA guy.

Fianna Fáil mark 2.

Cake by the ocean! cacacoisfarraige?

That's a scary but very believable take on them. Let's keep positive thoughts that they will destroy themselves nice and neatly (and quickly) and the other lot will cop themselves on and sort themselves out and offer us representatives and leaders that we can look up to. Is that hoping for unicorns?

Would Mary Loo even meet royals btw?
