So, who's going to see the Pope??

I was amazed when mil wondered aloud who would be bothered going to see him when she can have it on the telly while she's getting things done at home. Only one of her friends is making the trek (from the Midlands so easy enough to get there for the committed). It'll be interesting to see how many show up at the two events, it wouldn't surprise me if more end up in Knock. And apparently there's a temporary morgue set up in the Phoenix Park so that's hopeful.

The only person I know who would even consider going is my 90 year old nana and she's too frail. I wouldn't go if you paid me.

There's a morgue and field hospital set up as they're expecting around 750 creeping jesus types to end up with serious medical emergencies. It's disgusting that the homeless are being moved from their emergency housing to make way for the hordes of foreign tourists and patients being discharged from the Dublin hospitals to have empty beds for the casualties they're expecting.

It looks like a huge number going are coming from abroad. Immigration have denied 1000's from outside the EU visas for this visit. Media reports are commenting on the huge number of nuns, priests and elderly that are in Dublin.

It's also disgusting hearing how dismissive those attending the RDS are towards the victims of clerical abuse, too busy being catholic to be christian and lacking compassion when they're being interviewed by the media.

So, who's going to see the Pope??

My elderly parents live near the phoenix park and are leaving Dublin until Monday. All the gates were locked last night and no one can use the park now, 3 days before the mass. All the roads in their area are closed this weekend and they don't know if the local shops can even open so if they stay they'd be locked in their own house.

Apparently no-one they know is going and they are very, very catholic.

My parents are very devout Catholics but they decided to stay home. They're 70-ish so not elderly, and pretty fit and active, but they were really daunted by all the walking and standing involved. Sounds v sensible to me

I wonder if they factor in loss of revenue for the likes of the zoo/shops/restaurants/pubs etc that have had to close etc when they say how much his visit is costing us.

I'm in Dublin, but south side so will hopefully avoid all the fuss and inconvenience. Also not Catholic so was more excited by Obama's visit than the Pope's.

Hmm, have checked the road closure situation and there is a park and ride location nearish to me, so I will try and avoid going out when everyone is arriving and leaving. Although it's one hell of a long way from that park and ride to Phoenix Park so I doubt it's going to be many people's first choice.

I went last time! I was about 11 then. I rate this pope much more and would love to see him but life is too hectic at the moment, and I dont live in Ireland.
I dont believe that going to see the pope means you condone child abuse.

I believe thousands of people have applied for tickets with no intention of going as part of a silent protest.

I wonder if the protest will be noticeable on the day. If there are 500,000 tickets then they would probably need to have received about 20% of them for any difference at all to be seen. Plus, isn't it standing not seated? Empty seats are very obvious, but if people are standing and just spread themselves out a little bit it will take up all the extra space.

@honeyrider I totally agree. Also if money is being found to fund this trip then it should be used to ensure there should never be a homeless person in this country.

anyone know what the M50 is likely to be like on Saturday? We'll be going the whole way south to north at around 3ish. All the road closures look to be in town so won't go near there, but not sure about the knock on effects. Confused

I don't know anyone going, but I wouldn't expect to. None of my family or friends down there are religious. And those friends in NI who are religious are Protestant.

I'm hoping the M50 will be ok as DH has to pick DS up from the airport. It'll probably be fine, they are telling everyone to use public transport as much as possible.

I am catholic and I wouldnt mind seeing him but really can't be dealing with all the crowds and hassle involved. If I was living in Dublin then I possibly would have went. I don't know anyone who is going.

I don't know anyone going but I suspect my aunt and uncle will go. I think the majority of people going are from abroad if news reports are anything to go by.

I really admire Mary McAleese after her tv programme aired last night even more so because it's annoyed Mattie McGrath who's been ranting again today.

The only people I know who would even consider going are my 93 year old grandad (who is far far to frail) and my dad's friends sister who is a nun.

I think pp might be right about there being a bigger turn out in Knock though

I'm going to see the pope. I have no idea why. I am not religious but I still want to see him even if he is very very far away. Smile
